Checking up on kids and their families is a big value. But to be honest, I find it so dumb to do this based upon a number of days absent. Judge the kid on how he/she looks, acts, the things they say and do. That should tell you a lot more than just the days they are missing.
We're having some of the same problems, though. Had some very sad incidents in the last years and since, some CPS-workers go overboard and act upon the most innocent of things.
