Sept 25, 2011 Wonder - Mexican Riviera

All that is left is for me to receive the cruise docs then after that it's just a hop skip n a jump away to check-in and boarding.....Toooo excited, I can't wait.:cheer2::cheer2:

Girls start school wed. August 31st, and once that happens I will be sending the teachers an independent studies request for the girls. We do this so that when they miss that week of school the school will still get paid as though they were there and not a signal absence will count against the girls record......I’m sure it will be no problem seeing as how last year the girls missed 21 days of school for our last Disney Vacation......teachers said they came back smarter then ever, and had a great time listening to the girls share all their vacation adventures with the class, maybe a little time off is good for the brain, not to mention all the knowledge my girls have gained from their travels.....it is truly a learning experience!

Yup, I know exactly where that is. I grew up playing soccer there for years & years! Back in the day ;) My question then is, is there a standard form for the school work request? This will be our oldest's first year in kinder so we have no clue what to do.

What school district are you in?
Where will your daughter be attending school?
First be sure that your district offers independent studies, you can find out by calling the district office. Los Al does for sure, every year I just send the teachers a FYI email letting them know that my child will be missing school, the time frame and tell them that I would like her to receive independent studies for the time she will be gone. I find the sooner I do this the better, it gives the teacher a chance to put together the packet. The packet has never been overwhelming and my girls have always been able to finish it the weekend prior to our vacation.......I like it to be done ASAP so I dont have to worry about taking it on the trip with us and possibly losing it and I just don't want to deal with school work when there is sooooo much fun to be had.....
Los AL is very very happy to provide independent studies packet to kids who request them because they get paid for the child just like they were there not missing out on school......that is any districts real gripe with a child missing school is they dont get paid for the time a child is out....they lose money.....

Great, you are so helpful! She'll be at Newland in huntington but it's considered fountain valley school district. So I'll just call them & ask exactly what you said. Appreciate it!

Requested my DS's independent study packet for our 2 weeks/2 day trip on the first day of school. Our district will only do independent study if you miss more than 3 (it may have been changed to 5) days of school. The amount of work you are given largely depends on the teacher. Last year when I nicely explained to the teacher we would be going to Europe and I would really appreciate reprieve (my DS is a GATE/honors student so the teacher and I knew that falling a little behind wouldn't hurt him and he could catch up in a couple days). In turn, I promised he would learn from the museums/art/etc. The teacher did not give us anything to take with us but expected my son to talk about his experience when he returned. This year I get the feeling we won't have the same response since my DS will have only been in class for a couple weeks (minus his two sick days and Labor Day) and she will not have a feel for him yet. Also, this teacher does not mess around... they were learning serious concepts on the first day of school. Not complaining... it would be nice for him to have a strong academic teacher this year. He will just have to do it on the plane ride to and from Kauai. Another thing to mention, it is required by state or federal (?) law that children do PE during independent study. This can be fulfilled by "Swam in the (Mickey) pool for an hour" or "Danced for a half hour (in the clubs)." Best PE ever!

Hi and welcome. Would you like to join the FE exchange. We are closing the list on Saturday to give people 4 weeks to get things ready.

We are also planning to meet up on the first day so we can put names to faces and vice versa. My daughter is also 4 so I have no doubt they will get on great.

Welcome! What great ages for the cruise. I regret not taking my DS when he was that age as I think (personal opinion) that would have been the most magical time for my son (though he is, and always will be, scared of characters... but if I pay him, he will take photos with them... he kills me :rotfl:). When he was that age I wasn't even aware of DCL since we are on the west coast. We did more than our fair share of Disneyland trips to make up for it. We are going for our first time this year and he is 10. He will have a blast no matter what. How can you not? It is Disney, no school, hot weather, pools and beaches! So exciting to see little princesses with big princesses though!

I have given a couple of my favorite links before but here is a crazy long one with more disorganized info than you could ever want to catch you up:

Love your links, and this was is great and comparible with the 2 packing lists I've also seen on the Passporters site, plus Disboards recommended packing list too. It's great to see where they all overlap. My shopping list is getting larger.

Alright all countdown is 4 days until we close the FE list!

For those of you who are undecided, have said no, or even those who have said yes, you have until end of day on Saturday to change your mind. The list will then be closed giving you all 4 weeks to finalise your gifts etc.

Any questions?

Welcome. I'm afraid I can't give you any info on the nursery as I am a first timer. I know that we have at least one other little one that Mum has booked into the nursery and I've no doubt that there will be numerous replies to you in the next day or so with hints and tips.

Are you interested in joining the FE exchange. You are more than welcome to. So far there are 17 cabins participating. We are closing the list at the end of Saturday so you have a couple of days to make a decision. We are also looking at having a meet up on the first day around 3.05pm details will be confirmed as we progress closer to the cruise. I have a DD and she is 4 so I have no doubt she will love to meet yours.
