I'm so sorry to hear you came back to such difficulties, Jill. Pixie dust heading your way that you MIL and grandson recover quickly
.
I had to take our old boy George to the vet's on Thursday. He's had problems with his left back leg (essentially, the cartilege in his knee is gone), but he was all swollen up under his chin and it didn't look good. He was also breathing really hard.
It turns out, he has congestive heart failure and is retaining water which is bloating him in various places, but also putting pressure on his heart and lungs. Our vet gave me some heart pills for him (well, "gave" to the tune of $200 for one month's worth of pills) and called in two other prescriptions for blood pressure pills and a diuretic to help with the water retention. Did you know you can get dog prescriptions filled at the regular pharmacy? I just wish I could claim him on our insurance - though those two Rx's were much less expensive.
Anyway, George seems to be doing better, though the bloating is taking it's time going down. Honestly, though, he's 80-odd pounds (when I took him in he weighed 95 lbs - like 10 lbs of water there!) and he's 13 years old, which makes him something like 90 in human years. Dogs his size usually live 10-12 years, so I know we've been on "borrowed time" with him for quite a while now. I figure he'll let me know when the time comes. For now, he seems determined to hang in there a little while longer. He's still barking at the neighbors and enjoying the heck out of it, so I know he's not ready to go yet.
