Sensitive Subject: Overweight Kids at Disney and in USA in General

Has anyone noticed that the new Disney World vacation planning DVD features many more "robust" vacationers?

Josh's mom sorry I got serious there. Weight sure is a sensitive issue! You can tell your son too that although the road seems long ahead of him I have met Kidney transplant people and they have gotten to a healthy weight.

Thanks so much for that. It does mean a lot to him. I'm really hoping with us doing this together that he will be encouraged to keep it up and so will I. One day of no cheating under our belts!!! Thanks for all the support!!

I know I sound like an AA meeting here, but when you cheat you have problems! My DH and I were on Atkins and I lost 10 lbs in a month and fell off the wagon (sweet tooth does it every time) after a month. DH peservered and lost 23 lbs in 31/2 months. He fell off the wagon when he got sick and felt sorry for himself. He is slowly gaining it back I have kept it off but have more to do. In the past three months we have tried unsucessfully to get back to Atkins, but I cannot stand the no breakfast options soo I am looking at Southbeach. The moral is that if you can refrain from cheating as much as possible you may stay on the diet longer!

Peggy, I cannot say the same, I was looking for robust people to try to convince DH to go ahead and swim, and was not seeing very many at the pools! Darn it now I will be alone with my kids and my cellulite at the pool on our trip. My kids want to swim and can't do it alone!

Talk about a high jacked thread.... :p

I just wanted to say for those you talking about eating well and not cheating.. remember you need to make a lifestyle change that you can stick with your whole life.. PLEASE check out the http://bodyforlife.com/ site that teaches you how to eat well and really achieve good health!!

OMG! I walk daily, and lift weights religiously- and I am a size 12. Never knew that meant I was overweight.

ScarlettO--

I feel your pain! As I said in my first post, DH and I STRUGGLE to keep our weight down. I eat 1200 carefully chosen calories or less on most days, and we take one to three brisk walks per day (2-7 miles total), plus hikes on the weekend. We have started lifting hand weights. A work buddy and I do laps up and down a hill at lunch, and I still cannot fit into my size 12s!!!

DH is a former athlete who has had surgery on both knees and has excruciating calcium growths on the tendons in both feet. He cannot get the amount of exercise he used to and it is tough to keep weight off. I know we will never attain some people's "standards," but we refuse to give up!

My goal these days is to be healthy and fit, keep my blood values safe, and build some muscle. That is the goal of the pilot project for kids I am working on--it's not about being "model skinny" it is about nourishing, hydrating and moving your body.

Heck, I knew a thin-as-a-rail woman who had the worst clogged arteries and died of a heart attack.

As someone who will always struggle with weight, I have sympathy for all those who have similar weight challenges. Sadly, insulting people about their weight seems to be the last "acceptable" prejudice.

I was shocked when I was at Disney World at the number of fat (yes, I said "FAT") adults walked by me. How can they stand to look at themselves in the mirror? Our country has talked themselves into "It's okay to be overweight" and "A size 12 is average". I think it's pathetic really

Maybe I'm oversensitive because of the time of the month, but this really brought a tear to my eye. I'm really trying to hold back the tears because I cannot believe that people really think like this.

Yes, I am overweight, and while I am not happy with that fact, I am trying to change it. I am happy with myself though. I like myself as a person. I like looking in the mirror when I put on a nice outfit because I think I look nice.

It just makes me really upset that people can honestly think this way. I know everyone is entitled to their opinions, but this is over the line. I came to these boards to talk about my love of Disney, and now don't know how I feel about this place.

Don't, don't let yourself be hurt by one person that you don't know and don't care about. There are lots of people on here. Some will agree with you, some will say something that hurts. Please don't take it to heart.

I think I high-jacked it, but I was thinking it was getting really upsetting for people so I kinda went off track hoping to derail some of the anger, sorry. Then I went back to it, I am a thread messer upper!!!To stay off track for a moment I know it is a life change, but something about Atkins just sounds wrong because of the high fat, so I am looking at Southbeach and low glycemic load diets to hopefully change my eating habits. I will look at body for life. My mind knows it is a change but my eyes keep saying Chocolate Cake, must have it.

Awww Traci-lyn, I wouldn't let one person make you feel bad about the entire boards. We can't leave life because of the nasty people we come across, so we can't leave the boards either. Nasty people are everywhere, there is no escaping them. Take what they say with a grain of salt.

I like you because you post nice things about my boring trip reports. ::yes::

Oh and here....

Did the French really laugh at Oprah? OMG! She looks awesome these days. She eats healthy, exercises and I believe she ran a marathon.

Also--Did someone in this thread actually say that they would rather be mean than fat? Uh-Huh. Ah. OK. (crickets chirp). Yeah. Um. That is just a very strange thing to say. Did someone actually screen this particular person and let them have a foster child? Wow. I am speechless.

Not to continue to drag this thread down but I was curious and did a search. The person that stated that they where mean and said some of that mean stuff about being able to look in the mirror and that size 12 was fat... recently posted a thread about self esteem and how as they were getting older it was getting harder to keep good self-esteem...

Sometime's people put others down to make themselves feel better. Perhaps this is the case....

I too cannot believe how many seriously overweight people there were when I went to Disney. And I do not mean the "I wish I could lose 30-40 pounds kind of fat.." I mean the people who are weighing in well over 300 and 400 pounds. It really surprised me. Our society as rule is far far too fat. And far far too may people make way too many excuses about it.

It's true. I have noticed this on prior visits to Disney.

I never notice how overweight people are, until I go to Disney. I'm not talking about a size 12 either. These people are huge.

I've always been thin and now that I'm 41 and don't exercise I've gained about 10 lbs all around my middle and I can't stand it. Yuck! I better get exercising. I think it's all about moving more and making the right food choices.

I've been at the supermarket checkout line and glanced at the food of the person behind me. If that person happened to be heavy, I could tell why, because of the kinds of food that person chose to buy.

(Here I am re-highjacking this poor thread!)

Please take a look into the website I posted. Jeff and I tried Atkins and I know a lot of people really like it, but we both had problems with it and after MUCH research we decided that the Body for Life approach was the best and most beneficial for long term health.

I think you would like this plan as it lets you have a free day on Sunday and you can go ahead and eat that chocolate cake. I did the plan about 4 months ago and did excellently but with my moms approaching death I found I was emotionally unable to stick with the exercise and eating well. I just needed to over eat :(. I am now getting back on track and love this plan!

Take a look at this site too.... it talks about some of the pitfalls of the Atkins program in the long run, and I think it is right on track:

http://www.hussman.org/fitness/

I now return you to your regulary scheduled thread....

I've calmed myself down. I've thought about it and there are just mean people out there. I guess some people have to project their insecurities out by putting other people (who they don't even know) down.

Thanks all.

Well if anyone goes to the world april 6-13 they will see my big sized teen. What they dont know is that he takes lots of meds, including steroids for his asthma. He bowls, paintballs, rides his bike etc, but there is nothing to stop the weight gain. I am having dh come with me to the dr. next time to ask to have his dosage decreased. The dr. has been totally unwilling to do this. Oh, also you will see the big sized mom, me. No, I dont have asthma, I just have had 3 back operation, 1 leg a little longer than the other and a giant piece of plastic sewn into my stomach because of some incompetent dr. Yes I will walk around the world, just alot more slower than everyone else and if it gets really bad with pain I use a wheelchair, just to push it for balance. The dr. even commented that last time I lost 8 lbs. I told him I spent a week walking at disney. So there are my "excuses".

"that was an EXTREMELY Low point about the "foster" (not adopted) child"

Excuse me....I didn't realize that it is so much more excusable to banish a foster child than an adopted child.

To paraphrase....
"You know, you can call me low, all you want, it all rolls off. I just believe in calling a duck a duck, if you know what I mean."

I sent you a PM, but I just want to say, Ripleys Mom, that you need to look up the word "banish". You obviously have no idea what it means.

I think the OP mentioned this would be a sensitive subject. :(

It seems that no one can argue with the fact that more than half of American adults are overweight, and far too many kids are as well.

There is no dispute that there are some medical issues for some that make losing weight very difficult.

But sadly, there is just way too much OVEReating in this country. Supersized portions. High fructose corn syrup. Trans-fatty acids. Bad stuff nutritionally. Too little exercise, too. We ARE a fat nation.

It IS hard to resist the huge portions and pumped up flavor from all the fast food places around. But it certainly can be done. There are all SORTS of success stories on the WISH board.

There is no need to look down on ANYone, no matter their weight. Far better to support healthy lifestyles and those who choose to try them. :)

I'm asking you nicely here, cut the personal attacks guys.

A little less judgemental might be nice too, hmmmm? :)
