Senior Skip Day

DD16 is a senior. I have NO IDEA when her senior skip day is but I wouldn't care if she chose to skip. I'd just be happy that she were healthy enough to be attending school.

Due to a life-threatening illness & several surgeries, she hasn't been in school since last October (been on home-teaching when she's not in the hospital). She has her final surgery schedule for this Wednesday, and after her recovery, should be in good health again....just in time for graduation.

But yes, I'd tell her it's fine to skip, and wouldn't give it another thought.

My DD will be 18 by the time senior skip day will roll around next year.

I'm about 99% I will give her the ability to make her own decisions regarding her attendance. (Unless DD starts to give me any concern about slacking at the end of high school.)

Now- as far as senior skip - I would not encourage her to skip on that particular day. (traditionally too much drinking).

I would, however, encourage her to take a "mental health" day after her AP exams have been taken.;)

I didn't skip , you got bonus marks if you attended school on senior skip day. Besides, I didn't see the point of skipping for some meaningless reason, I'd rather miss school for something valid like illness or a family death (which occured my senior year).

Our skip day was always a Wednesday, Pro-Am day. Our high school was right across the street from Forest Oaks, which is where the Greater Greensboro Open was held. At the time it was the only PGA stop in NC. So no senior in their right mind was going to school with Michael Jordan and Bill Murray across the street! Most of the parents were fine with it, some had picnics and parties on their decks if they were right on the golf course. Funny thing was it was sort of "everybody skip day". After a couple of years, they just planned that Wednesday off into the calendar. I think we were the only school in the state to get out for a golf tournament!

I skipped on senior skip day.. no reason not to, IMO. It was almost the end of the year, I had already taken AP exams, I was exempt from my in-class exams, teachers weren't teaching, and the teachers didn't expect the kids to come so they planned to watch movies in class.. my parents knew and didn't have an issue.

I loved Senior Skip Day. We all went to the beach (or lake, whatever it was). It makes me sad that some schools are so strict about it. You worked so hard for 3 - 4 years, it's just one day.

We didn't have a senior skip day but my mom was pretty lenient with my attendance anyway. I made really good grades and rarely skipped during high school so if I was having a day where I just really needed a break she'd often let me skip a day. I also was almost always exempt from exams so rarely had to go most of the last few days of school anyway.

Would I let my kids participate in a senior skip day if there was one during their senior year? Yes, I honestly would. But then again, I'm a lot like my mom in the fact that as long as my kids are doing well in school and not missing something important then I don't think it's a big deal to let them have a day off every now and then.

Actually, my dd is in kindergarten and the year is winding down so last week when I stayed home from work with my ds for 2 days (he was sick at the time) I let her stay home too, even though she wasn't sick. She has only missed 2 days all year so I figured why not? They aren't really doing anything much these last couple of weeks anyway. She's done with her testing, homework, etc., for the year. (Yes, I know. They test in kindergarten now, lol!)

I was part of drama and none of us could participate on the official Senior Skip Day because it was opening night for our end of year production. If we missed more than one period during the day of production we were not allowed to work on that performance.

Since we couldn't participate on the official day we organized a "Drama Senior Skip Day" for the following week.

My mother knew about it and was 100% fine with me doing it.

I didn't skip. My mom would have been fine with it, but I was one of "those" kids. I went to school because it was what I did. I had an art project due that day, but mostly I went because I was not a partier, was into sports and had practice that day. A few years before, I went to school during a teachers' strike to give myself something to do. Yep, strange kid.

My DD is still in grade school. I would leave the decision to her. That is what my mom did.
