Send us some pixiedust.

As with all the others, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

If I may make a suggestion... Get in contact with whomever your father has his health insurance from. Check with them to make sure that his insurance will be accepted at a Orlando based hospital.

Also, in addition to Celebration, there is Sand Lake hospital, which is not far from WDW at all.

Hope everything goes well for you and your family. :grouphug:

I send you my prayers and good wishes for a peaceful and successful trip. One thing to remember though, it gets very hot and humid in June, and breathing for heart and lung patients can be affected. Pay close attention to how he's feeling and encourage him to take it slow if he needs down time, a cool environment or rest. Even though there are emergency services available, the best scenario is a vacation without having to use them.

Good luck and enjoy your DVC! Take lots of pictures and make great memories.

I will say a special prayer for your dad. I lost my dad to COPD, and my mom to lung cancer. The thing with my mom is that she didn't go to the doctor. By the time we found out (she lived in a different state), it was too late. The doctor said if she had come in sooner, he could have helped her. I am hoping that your dad caught it in time and can be helped. God bless your family and I hope your dad has the time of his life.

Well they caught it in time for treatment but it isn't curable... kinda like high blood pressure, it can be treated but not cured.

Dad has already said he will have middle of the day breaks, but the humidity is just like down here on the coast of Texas, in fact it may be better there than here. He won't be able to be in the sun too much because the trial medicine he is on will make him break out in a rash with too much sun exposure, so long sleeves and jeans with spf 85 sunscreen on under. So if you see some crazy guy walking (or scootin) around in the middle of the summer in long sleeves and jeans that would be us.

Sorry to hear about your father. I don't know if you listen to the Disunplug podcast, but they did talk medical problems in WDW on a old podcast. It was on 1/1/08. They did mention the hospital, but it talked about some other options. I hope this helps. And good luck with your vacation and your father's health.

Just a thought - - but the jeans are going to be really hot - what not treat Dad to some cool cotton pants - you know, like they wear in the tropics. Nice light weight cotton pants and long sleeve cotton shirt - sure will keep him cooler!!

Good thoughts and have a great time!

Celebration Hospital is the best!!

Christy, so sorry your Dad has lung cancer. I hope he beats it. I lost my Mom 2 years ago to lung cancer but it was too late by the time they found it. Didn't they tell you in Texas that we have a MD Anderson in downtown Oralndo not too far from Disney. It is part of Orlando Regional. Check into it. I have been a RN in Orlando for 30 years and it is a good hospital. My mother was treated there.

Lots of pixie dust to your and your family!! I hope everything works out! :grouphug:

Hopefully your dad will be renting a scooter or wheel chair for his stay. Being on chemo or other treatments can make him more tired, so motoring around with make his trip more magical.

Depending on his stamina, his day planning may need to be adjusted, even to the fact of only heading out for a few hours at a time if his stamina is really low at the time. Taking long recovery breaks, all depends on how long he is into treatment schedule and how well he tolerates it.

Sometimes people on chemo loose lots of weight and the cushioning fat on your butt disappears. So, if your dad has that problem, make sure to bring a cushion along for him to sit on during the hard plastic ride seats, bus seats, and other seats. It can be darn right painful with no padding on the but. . Some people gain, others loose weight during treatments, just something to keep in mind.

If he looses lots of weight and is always cold, and needs to keep warm back in the room, and the default temp in the room is to cold for him, call maintenace, they can over ride that, to keep the temp to what you need.

Along with the light weight long sleeve clothing, hat, to keep him covered but cool.

Just go and have a great time, don't cancel the trip. He will so look forward to the trip and help keep him positive during his treatments. You may have to modify to adjust his needs, but you all will create some lasting memories there.

First, sending you lots of pixie dust, treasure the memories that your dad wants to make with this trip.

Have you tried Sun Precautions clothing? I am the crazy lady last August wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts in 100 degrees:cool2: Have been wearing this brand for over 8 years.

he is not on chemo right now, on a trial drug that is supposed to help drain the fluid off the lining of his lungs.

my problem isn't that he gets cold... it's that he gets hot real fast. he will break out into sweats which makes it even harder for him to breathe. thats what im worried about but he and my mom are going to go at their own pace because my mom will not leave him at all.... ever lol. but he is used to her being a worry wart and knows that she will be his shadow. as for the other 4 of us we are doing out own thing but making sure dad is okay.

thanks everyone for your thoughts

Google Sun Precautions. It is a company that makes quality clothing for people who are allergic or are sun sensitive. The material Solumbra is has a high SPF and the clothing is pricey but I have tried other brands that you can buy at the sporting good stores. The biggest difference is the way the fabric feels and how it protects you. I started wearing it when my DDs started playing competitive softball (in fact made trips to College Station and Garland for tournaments in the summer)
Regular cotton pants don't keep the "heat" out. Jeans maybe be warmer to wear but if the sun "hurts" cotton pants don't protect from the rays and jeans are thick enough to block the UV rays. Even though I am covered up wearing what looks like warm up suits or long pants and long sleeve shirts, I am actually cooler than people wearing tank tops and shorts plus my skin is being protected. The solumbra fabric actually blocks rays and my skin doesn't hurt from the "heat" or rays.
I don't know if I explained it right but check it out. You can mail order and return if it doesn't work out. There are sports clothing and dressier items also. I teach and on really hot days, I have several jacket styles that I can wear outside for duty and inside the ac classroom.

Again wishing you a wonderful trip :wizard:

well thanks for the thoughts and prayers everyone, but dad has decided not to go, which made mom decide not to go. So us "kids" will we at disney. Maybe we will see some of yall there.

I can imagine your disapointment, however, I think your father should be applauded for knowing his limitations. For him to become ill away from home and the doctors who know him would make his recovery even harder. Go, have your vacation, bring back lots of pictures and memories to share with your parents. Again, I extend my prayers to all of you.

glad he decided that!

just make another trip when he can do.::yes::

I am allergic to the sun - just bring an a hat and umbrella and LEAVE. Disney is open at night and the late afternoon sun is not that bad. So leave around 11 am and come back after 5pm.

that clothing didn't work very well for me. My regular clothing is generally fine - but try to stay out of the sun.
