Selling Scrapbooks

I think I posted something similar to this a while back, but I can't find my bookmark. Do any of you make scrapbooks as a business? How much do you charge - a flat fee or a per page fee? Do you include albums/page protectors or is that separate? How do you generate business - advertisements, word of mouth?

Any details or insight is appreciated!

I charge $15 per 12x12 page not including supplies. And it has been by word of mouth. So far I've done several albums each for 3 different people over that past few years. In the past year I did 3 Ablums for this lady and will be starting a 4 Album for her sometime in the summer. It helps pay for my vac. the past couple of years.....

Thanks, Becky! That at least gives me an idea of what you charge. It was more than I was thinking of charging; however, I was thinking of a flat fee + a smaller amount per page.

I do upfront $90 supply fee and $5 a page. That is for a CM book. If I fill that up I usually do $6 a page to cover more supplies.

I have a flyer I leave around town and word of mouth.

That is per page. I took a class a few years ago at the Orlando Memories Expo and compared to what they told us in the class that some people charge mine is cheap. For a 8x11 I charge $7. You have to look at it as a job and don't short change yourself. This last person I've been working for all she gives me is the pictures I then decide what goes in the album then can spend hours at the LSS picking our paper and etc then doing the layouts. Time is $$$.

Good points! My friend is a Stampin' Up Consultant and asked me my ideas about this. She has been approached to do this, but was unsure what to say. She didn't want to short change herself from the beginning!

Afriend of mine is a CMC and she charges $10 per 12 x 12 page plus supplies. That sounds a little low compared to other postings here but I'm not sure people in this area would pay much more.

One of my clients asked me what I'd charge to make a book for his family after he saw my album to Disney. At the time I was so burnt out on Disney, I laughed and told him I doubted I'd ever do another album!! Of course I will but what a great compliment!

I think it'd be very difficult to scrap an album for someone else b/c you don't know how to journal it. How would you know what they were thinking or feeling in each shot? Those of you that have done one, how do you journal? Do you ask them to tell you about certain pictures or do you just make stuff up? I think that would be the hardest part of all.

Do you journal for the people too? I just did an album for a neighbor that she was giving to her church. I put in places to journal, but I left that up to her. No way could I do that for some one else. I also made her go through the photos with me and tell me what could be cropped out. SOme people are funny about this and I did not have a good feel for some things. I can't imagine sorting for someone. I know that I have pictures that are not great, but are very special to me. SOmeone else would have pitched them.

This is what I have seen displayed at local Scap stores, some vary if you provide your own book.

My Question is do a lot of people contact you with the flyer/word of mouth thing? and do you do the journalling or leave it blank for the person?

Part of what I do is interview people to extract the story(s) from them, and then organize it (them) into a coherent whole. A 12 x 12 album costs about $125 in supplies and 500 - 1000 in labor depending. I do primarily heritage, military, career, retirement and milestone event albums.

My mother asked me to do an album for her and she numbered the pictures on the back and she and my dad wrote journaling corresponding to the numbers. It was very easy to put the pages together and do the journaling with it. Of course, when I was finished she wanted five or six journaling blocks redone (one typo by me, the rest she rewrote my dad's journaling), so it was good that I used xyron repositionable adhesive! That's what happens when you mom is an editor!

Of course, this would require the organization be done before you get the pictures, and that might be hard for some people (they might want you to organize and do the pages for them!).

Thank you so much for the imput on how much to charge. A couple of people have asked about doing an album for them and I couldn't figure out how to charge them. A flat rate per page plus the cost of the album seems the easiest.

I don't journal for others i leave space or make journal boxes and provide each customer with a pen and help them do there own.
