So I know the going rate for points depends on when they need to be used. Usually that's around $15 correct?

If the person is family do you usually charge a little less? I'm trying to figure out what I should charge.

Thanks

I just rented points to my sister for a trip in April. I think it was around $7.00/point. We weren't able to use the points, and they wanted to go. I didn't feel like using an outside service.

I've offered my points to family and only ask them to cover my MFs for those points. One family member gladly took me up on the offer. Another still felt it was too much since I got those points "for free" every year.

If I had extra points that I was willing to rent to a family member, I would only charge them maintenance fees since my points are all paid. If I had a loan on my points, I might attempt to recoup at least some of those costs as well.

Depends on how much you like your family members. One brother of mine, I would charge $8 a point to, just enough to cover costs. The other, somewhere closer to $15 per point.

We give points to family and friends all the time at no cost. I don’t think we would charge but if we did I can’t imagine it would be more than maintenance fee per point. It actually never occurred to me to charge.

If I decided to help I would ask for the MF, except for my daughters they would get the points for free.

If they asked me without my offering to them, I’d charge a couple bucks lower than going rate. If I offered, I’d ask for MFs plus my amortized upfront costs.

the other thing I would add -- for me, a lot would depend on the context of the trip and the overall group dynamic.

On one extreme, if my older sister asked me if she could use my points on a trip where we're not going, then I'd charge a few bucks less than going rate (I would make it clear that it is not cancellable after my banking deadline). On the other end, we invited my parents to join us on our next trip and we're getting a 2 BR and we are treating them to that. With that said, I have dropped several subtle hints about how much these rooms normally cost so they have some idea of how great of a deal they're getting.

If we invite them to join us, nothing. If they ask to use our points, it might depend on whether I wanted to use the points or not.

My main concern with family would be the "cancellation policy" you may impose. If they don't understand DVC, they probably won't understand that it's not the same a cancelling a regular hotel room. I can see where that could get ugly.

I'd try to avoid this situation altogether unless it's me looking to unload my points. (ha) In which case,

For my children, it'd be free.

I'd probably charge dues only for parents / siblings. I'd maybe charge $10 (which for me would not cover my upfront costs, but offsets it a little) if they are asking me for them and I happen to have them to spare.

If I invite a friend to share a room with me I don't charge anything. If I have to book another room or a bigger room, then I change them the costs ($7, being MF+a pro-rate of the buy in cost). It has never happened, but if they as me to book a vacation for them without me, I'd ask market rate less a couple $ discount.

I charged my brother $10pp and he was resentful of that amount. They were BWV points and $6.30 for maintenance fees. I dunno. It was so weird. He would definitely have charged me, likely for more than I charged him.... in the past he has charged me to live in an apartment that my parents co-owned with him. and they paid for it all. He begged me to stay in the apartment to cover his maintenance fee, then had it under construction (no kitchen no bathroom for months-- and I had left a very nice 36th floor studio overlooking the hudson river to "help him out"). I would never do business with my own brother ever, ever again. Need I say more?

We're renting/selling points to my wife's aunt/uncle and we're charging them what we would net from David's if we rented the points through them ($14/pp). They're saving almost 500 dollars over renting from David, and they just have to deal with us directly to manage their reservation. We'll also have better luck getting a std view room saving them more points. I see it as win/win for both parties.

We're also going with my wife's brothers's family, and we're all getting a 2 bed instead of a 1bed for us and a studio for them. I'm only asking them to cover the point difference between the 1 and 2 bed for the trip and charging them less for the points as they're sharing a room with us and not getting their own room. I think we're just asking a flat 1K from them where the studio would cost them a little over 2100 dollars if they rented points. They save over a grand but have to share a room with us :)

We recently purchased so the cost of the initial purchase is very fresh in my mind. Luckily the family is cool with it and doesn't expect free/deeply discounted point usage. They understand we paid a good sum of money to become members, and they know how much renting from David's or another company costs. Everyone feels the situation is fair.

I think a lot of people just think it's a timeshare and that if you're not using the points, then you're going to lose them, so they don't put much value on them. They fail to understand how easy it is to rent the points out through a broker. And a lot of people have no idea how expensive a Disney hotel room is. I know I had no idea of the pricing until we booked a trip two years ago and I almost fainted when I saw the per night cost for a studio at the Grand Floridian.
