I have (what I feel like is) a significant amount of old 14K gold jewelry I would like to "cash" in for our upcoming Disney trip.

I am so confused by what I have read (in all sorts of places) about selling gold. :confused3 Some say only use a mail order service, some say ONLY a store front. I have no idea where to start.

I have weighed my gold and used the conversion chart based on 14K gold so I know about what it should be worth, but I have NO idea where to take it.

Anyone been somewhere recently they can recommend? Did you get what you thought was a reasonable amount?

HELP!!

I have a great amount of old jewellery and i want to cash up for the education of my daughter. Please recommend me present amount of old jewellery.

In January I gathered my old gold, mostly 14k earrings, charms and bracelets. DH gave me a lovely pair of diamond earrings for Christmas, which he told me to wear everyday. I had 2 local jewelry stores in mind and expected my items to be about $500. DH went with me. There was no obligation at the first store, they evaluated my jewelry and gave me a figure of $504. The offered amount was what I wanted, so I accepted their offer and walked out with a check. I personally would prefer to deal with someone face to face. Just remember, you don't have to accept their offer. Good luck.

Lots of good info and first-hand experiences here, in this thread. *It's a pretty big thread, I would start at the end and work back a few pages, to get the gist of it.*

I can personally recommend US Gold Buyers (USGB). Most folks on the thread have used their services by mail, but since I'm local to their NYC offices, I went there in person. They didn't just dump all my gold on a scale and offer me a random price, as several local jewelry stores did...they tested and weighed each piece individually. Turns out I had quite a few 18K pieces, and only one 10K item (my HS class ring), but the local jewelers lumped everything together as 14K, which meant a lower pay-out. Not surprisingly, the payment offered by USGB was almost twice as much what was offered by my local jewelers ($3,000 vs. $1,600).

I would definitely check them out. Gold prices are even higher now than they were when I sold my gold two years ago, so there's the possibility of walking away with some serious cash. And if you're not happy with the payout that they offer, you can always elect to decline the offer and have your jewelry returned to you.

Best of luck...

We did it through a local jewler that accepts gold for cash. If you don't know where to start, try the phone book. Just start calling around places and see if they take it, If they don't they'll most likely tell you a local place that does.

Our jewler offered cash or double the amount in store credit. We went with the cash, but looking back we should have taken the double store credit, as we went back just one month later and bought a new watch

I would rather go to a store, that way you can watch as they weigh each piece and then you can make sure you are getting what you should. My brother has a store but its in NJ...lol

I took my old gold to a local jewelery store that has been around for at least 20 years. I know a ton of people who shop there, so I figured they were honest.

I expected to get around $500 (just my guess). I got more than 2x that! i was thrilled!

I would recommend going to a long standing business. They know how to keep customers coming back.
