Selling my Kindle

I received a Kindle as a gift last year and have never used it. It sat in the box for about 6 months, I finally plugged it in to charge it where it sat for another 2 months, downloaded a couple books to it, read half of one and haven't touched it since. I think I just prefer reading an actual book. Anyway, I'm thinking of selling my Kindle and need some thoughts. Should I list it on craigslist? It is almost exactly a year old.

I would say try ebay. I buy tons of stuff off of there.

This is JMO, but you might also just want to post it on Facebook or send an email to your friends (unless you need to hide it from the former gift giver). I had a friend do that when they got an iPad and they immediately had about 3 people interested in buying their used Kindle. If you know it is in good shape and you are offering it at a win/win price for both of you, I wouldn't have a problem with it if my friend was doing it.

Easier for you to deal with and helping out a friend who may not have been able to spend the full price on a new purchase.

It took me forever to find a good deal on a used kindle on e-bay because they all kept going for way more than I was willing to pay. So you might be able to recoup a pretty good chunk of change if you're comfortable going that route. Yours is out of warranty now, so you might not get top dollar, but I bet you'd have to discount it even more on craigslist.

I was a hold out for the longest time because I just knew I'd never like an e-reader as much as an actual book, but I finally gave in and bought one when I didn't want to haul my big heavy books on vacation... and now I love mine. In fact I just picked up a couple of free books that I'm really looking forward to reading. How often does that happen in the bookstore?

Are you sure you don't want to give your kindle another chance?

my favorite thing is my kindle app for my droid. It's a free app! All I have to buy is the books and I'd be carrying the phone around anyway.

Donate it to a local school.

What, why you ask? Let me tell you my story--and I am no way "asking" for a donation.

I am an English teacher at an inner city school in one the most dangerous cities in the United States. We try to bring a technological edge to all classes and literacy is no exception. I have my own personal Nook that I bring to class. I can't tell you how excited my tough-as-nails, gritty students get when they see this ereader. They are suddenly excited over reading.

One of my challenging students (he fights, anger issues, etc) sat down with me and read Gullivers Travels with me. Not the adapted version but the Robert Louis Stevenson version.. for 15 minutes he sat there and read.. which is a HUGE accomplishment. --not only behaviorally but also academically.

That same day, I sat with another female student and together we laughed along as we read Tina Fey's Bossypants.. (she picked it).

If anything can get these students excited over reading instead of the street corner, drugs or fighting... I'm all for it.

Now I have students asking me to bring it in everyday.. If you can find an arrangement like that where you know the students would use it.. I'd do it. Right now I load my Nook up with my own books and I have a Students shelf as well.. I've loaded all types of adolescent literature on it for them to read.

I second this idea. Or even a women's shelter/safehouse would be a great idea.

If you decide to donate it, you can write it off on your taxes, including the cost of the few books you have on it. A really win-win situation!!

I'm with several other posters here.. If you have a FB page, I would casually mention that I was going to selling my Kindle because I prefer books and thought you would give them the first shot at buying it.. If you have a lot of FB friends, I'm sure at least one of them has thought about purchasing an e-reader..

My DD "almost" bought me a Kindle for Christmas because I read an alarming amount of books over very short periods of time (usually picked up in garage sales; thrift stores; or purchased used on half.com).. She hemmed and hawed and finally came right out and asked me (thank goodness) and I told her I wasn't interested in it at all - although I really appreciated the thought..

I'm so glad she asked ahead of time though because I would have hated to see her waste her money on something I wouldn't use.. So instead she bought me several books I had on my list of "wants"..

DGD has had friends over to the house who have either the Kindle or the Nook - so it's not like I've never seen one or tried to use one.. They're just not for me - I don't get the same enjoyment out of them - and I don't like the "feel" of them.. I much prefer the good old-fashioned books - so I can understand where you're coming from..

However, there are lots of people out there who do enjoy them - so I'd be inclined to offer it to friends first - unless you sell on eBay or CL on a regular basis..
