We purchased our "dream" March 2007, and have only used it once. Now we may have to sale it...because I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 weeks ago. The medical bills are already starting to hit the roof (and we only pay 10%):scared1: . I just don't know what to do:confused3 ??? Our savings is going fast...I don't think it matters how much you save, medical bills take it FAST!! We waited 10 years before purchasing DVC, because we wanted to pay it cash. I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I had to get some input from some DVC members...

Hugs and Prayers, Wendy.

We contacted this site's sponsor, The Timeshare Store, last week to inquire about selling one of our contracts. They responded w/in the same day (<1hr?) with complete information on the selling process and costs. From what I've already read here - they make the process as simple as possible.

You might want to consider a quick 25pt or 50pt add-on through DVC before you sell. The small contract would at least keep your foot in the door - maintaining your access to DVC discounts, special events, etc. with low dues.

Awe, I am so sorry, Wendy. I don't have any advice, I just want to tell you that my prayers are with you for a full recovery.

Wendy- you have to do what is right for you right now...and I'm sorry to hear that you have to sell, but getting you healthy without worrying about the bills sounds good to me. DVC will be there, you can rent points and even purchase after things get better, maybe a smaller contract. Before you sell you might want to consider getting a small contrat 25-50 point or so and then sell of your main contract...keeping the little one which will allow you to buy small contracts as your finances allow. Plus then you can still do trips(every other yr or so). All the best-wishing you a complete recovery!

Wendy -
Have said a little prayer for you, your family and your medical providers. You will get lots of advice from the DIS boarders, I am sure - and most more experienced that myself. But I will offer a thought for you to consider - don't rush into anything! Bills will always be there - and you could be very surprised if you ask your providers for a payment plan [you might get a great one] - they would rather be assured of payment than they would care to have to send your account to collections. A Disney vacation might be what a doctor would order if it was important for your care to be able to get you to a place where you could relax, destress and enjoy a special time with family. If that vacation is a year away - you could rent or trade your points in the mean time and use the $ to pay the maintenance costs. Your response to treatment may be better than imagined and you could be on the road to recovery sooner than you think. The power of prayer and the personal desire and intention to overcome can do as much, if not more than the power of medicine. Blest wishes to you and your support team - add us dis boarders to your team's second string.

:grouphug: so sorry on top of worrying about your health you had to make this difficult and sad decision. Get well.

:grouphug:
I'm saying prayers that you respond to treatment and have a full recovery.

Wendy, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know you will make the right decision for yourself. I will prayer for strengh and hope for you and your family and wisdom for your doctors and caregivers.

I agree with pb4ugo about not making this decision quickly. Almost all health care providers will work out a payment plan for people even if it is in small amounts a month. I see you have a trip planned for November - it may be the very thing you need to look forward to over the next few months. May treatment go well and may you be on the path to recovery quickly.

We had to cancel our Nov. trip due to DH's chemo/radiation. Our out of pocket too is in the multiple thousands. But looking forward to our trip this Nov. was definitely a motivating factor for DH. He so loves our DVC trips. Would not consider selling.

Best of luck to you. Treatments for all types of cancers have come such a long way. Sending bunches of pixie dust your way.

Mary

Hugs and prayers to you and a quick recovery. My friend/co-worker is going through this right now.

You have to do what you feel in your heart. It might be one thing less to worry about and yet like everyone has said - you might need it to help you get through this.

We have beeen going through medical bills and living off our savings since Sept. 07 due to my dh's medical condition also (two heart attacks, a quadruple and a recent surgery again 10 days ago).

We will most likely (99%) cancel our August reservation (first time staying at BCV and sooooo looking forward to it and really, really needing it) - the timing is just not right now and we don't know how long we will be like this. It has been a very long stressful time.

Think about it and you will need to come to a decision that is comfortable for you.

Again, prayers and hugs to you.

You have my prayers for you and your family. I sure hope that all of you in the United States get someone in the next election that will give you health care like us in the Canada, it is a big relief not having to worry about things like that when we go to the hospital for anything. God Bless you:flower3:

You might also consider renting out your points for the next year to see if you can hold off selling your interest entirely.

Wendy, I am so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I am a survivor myself. I can't say what you should do, but I can offer you advice that was given to me by my greatest supporter while I was going through this, she too had breast cancer. Her advice, "not today". If there is nothing happening with doctors, or procedures, or treatments today, keep in mind - "not today". It helped me get through everything so much.

Secondly, this also applies to your bills, your selling DVC. Think it through, take the time, there is great life after breast cancer, and if you really really want your DVC to be there for you, ponder before selling....can you make minimum payments to your medical creditors over the upcoming years, enabling you to hang on to DVC - at least for now until you have had time to think and settle into a final decision? Can you purchase a small amount of points, perhaps in 2 separate contracts, before you sell?

Take a deep breath. My thoughts and prayers are really with you.

I'm sure you have done this, but maybe not with the stress of the last two weeks.

Can your insurance provider and make sure you completely understand your policy. I had a friend who went thru something similar and was very stressed about money because he had to pay 20% of all bills. On my suggestion he called his insurance provider and found that he had a "max out of pocket" of $2000 annually, meaning that once he paid $2000 he didn't have to pay anything more.

Every policy is different and I'm sure you know and understand yours, but just in case you might call and verify.

good luck to you and prayers are sent your way.

As for DVC...obviously your health takes priority.....but a relaxing vacation to look forward to never hurt;)

Excellent point. Once you meet your max out-of-pocket expenses, you may find your insurance pays at 100%, but I agree that you should call their member services and ask to have all of this explained to you.

Have you thought about renting your points out? It may be a good alternative to selling your contract.

Best of luck to you. :)
