Selling jewelry for cash

I was cleaning out my jewelry chest the other day, and came upon a pair of earrings that my mother-in-law gave me. They were hers and she didn't want them anymore. They are white gold with two rows of small diamonds. They kind of look like little shells. I wore them once, but they aren't my style at all and have just been collecting dust. With Christmas coming, I thought it would be nice to earn some extra cash by selling them. Anyone have any experience selling something like this? Where should I bring them? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

You could try the local pawn shops in your area. Don't expect to get much for them though. Or craigs list or e-bay. However you go about it, it will either take a bit of time to deal with the buyers or you'll get less for them.

Good luck!

Most places do it by weight and do not necessarily care about whatever stones are in the piece(s). We have a lot of "cash for gold" places around here, so I picked one and went there when I had a need to sell my jewelry. Prices fluctuate with whatever the going rate of the metal is. One pair of earrings is not going to generate any significant amount of cash, I'm sorry to say.

I would definetly shop around....don't take the first offer and get your offers in writing so when you go back they don't try to change it. Good luck!

LOL and they may still change it. usually the quotes are not contracts so they are not legally binding. I've gone back to places the next day and when I showed them the original quote I have been told. "the price of gold changes daily and the rate form our refiner (whatever that is) changes daily" :lmao:

Now sure if it makes a difference but you may go on line and get the current price for gold and at least have an idea.

I'm with the other poster, one pair of earrings is not going to fetch much.

I'm not too sure of that for one pair of earrings. You could easily spend more in gas driving around than whatever sort of higher price from one place or another might net you.

A lot will depend on the gold. Diamond chips are fairly worthless.

When I sold some of mine they measured weight in "penny weights" and said a diamond than 1 carat wasn't worth anything. I ended up getting $900 for what was basically old junk! Never know, I'd at least check it out- I just wouldn't have high expectations. I went to a place that buys gold/coins called "treasure hunt". It's a chain but I believe only around sw pa.

Thanks, all. I will check around. The diamonds are larger than chips, and the earrings are heavy, so I want to get a few quotes.

White gold isn't really gold. You won't get much if anything for earrings like that from a jewelry buyer.

You might do better to trade them in at a local jewelry store for value towards a new purchase of something that is more your style.

White gold is most certainly gold, a 14k yellow gold ring has the same amount of pure gold as a white gold 14k ring....with the white gold being dipped in rhodium to create its white appearance. Both 14k rings would have about 58% pure gold in them, the other 42% being a mix of metals. The higher the karat, the more pure gold in the ring. 24k is 100% pure gold but much too soft for jewelry.

Your white gold earrings should fetch the same price as yellow gold since they both contain the same weight of pure gold.

I have some jewelry I've been wanting to sell also. I missed the gold price peak so I've been holding off. I have a lot of gold and I have a couple diamonds that are 1-1.5 carats. One is set in a ring with lots of small diamonds. I remember when this ring was purchased for my mom and cost 12k back in 1995.

Unfortunately, you can get very little for this type of jewelry now. The gold is still worth something but not as much as it used to be. And the diamonds? Not worth much at all. I have done quite a bit of research and the best bet is just to trade it in to a jeweler for a credit towards something else. Not really what I want b/c i hardly wear jewelry at all...forget even my wedding ring half the time. It's sad how little of value fine jewelry holds unless it's a brand such as Tiffany.

Yeah, I have a marquise diamond that I have no use for. It is from the wedding ring from my first marriage. I sold the gold, but they didn't want the diamond because it was less that 1/2 carat and "no one wants marquises anymore" according to the buyer. They removed the diamond for free and gave it back. They also removed the stones from a bracelet I didn't want anymore. I don't know what they are, but they are rose colored something or other.

I did get almost $400 for a pile of basically junk.
