Selling a used mattress

WHY did I even read this thread? We leave for WDW in a day and now I'm concerned about the 3 different hotels we are staying at having bed bugs!

If your state allows sales of used mattresses, I would definitely try Craigs List, and if you want to move it quick, $200 is probably a good price. In NC it is illegal to sell used mattresses, but someone selling a bed, can throw them in for no extra charge. The last one I needed to get rid of, I offered on freecycle and it was gone within hours, so keep that in mind as well.

Thanks guys. I already have people asking about buying it just from word of mouth from friends and co-workers I talked to about whether they would buy a used mattress.
Asking $225.......sad, my mom paid $2,300 for it 2 years ago almost to the day.

In MI it is illegal to sell a used mattress. They had a "gotcha" segment on the news a few weeks ago where companies where taking used mattresses and just putting a new cloth cover on it and selling it as new.

It seems that the laws for individuals over businesses on selling used mattress vary a lot.
Here in California, a used mattress sold by an individual has no regulation, but by a business it must be either sterilized or recovered, and yes, it has to be sold as used or refurbished.

I wouldn't buy a used one myself, but the point about that fact that few of us give a second thought to the fact we are sleeping on someone else's used mattress in a hotel, on a cruise ship, or at a friends house is well taken.

Like I stated, my issue was, it seems such like such a waste to throw out something that cost over $2,000 2 years ago. The rest of the mattresses will be going to the dump, one is at least 60 years old!

We have a daybed, trundle and two twin mattresses that I am unable to even give away. They are about 22 years old, but were in our guest room, and have only been used when we have weekend guests. Once our weekend guests started having children, the guest room was too small, so, we haven't used it in the past several years.

When we changed our son's bedroom furniture from kid sized to adult sized last year, Goodwill wouldn't take the bed frame. We reused the mattress (which is full sized). I already knew that in Indiana I couldn't donate mattresses, but, I didn't know that frames couldn't be donated.

Are you near a university town? You might find that students would be happy to buy it.

Wrong time of year, kids are moving out and throwing out beds now. Now sure how many college kids have room for a queen size bed.

True. But some students move from on-campus to off-campus housing in June when the new rental year starts and would need something. If you were in Greenville NC, I'd probably buy it for my son who will be needing a bed. He's not going back to school until August, but he's already paying for his room at his house starting now.

We had this dilemma recently too and ended up just giving it away to a very appreciative person who had a "wanted" ad on craigslist. I personally would never purchase a used mattress or furniture with fabric. Really surprised me how many people were looking for free or cheap mattresses!

OT: why is it illegal in some states to sell a used matteress.??

BTW: sure a family in Moore, OK would be happy to get it .

Use a lint roller or feminie hygiene pad to look for bed bug poop, you have them or you don't :thumbsup2

Do you have a Craigslist or Freecyle list in your area? I gave away my old Soma waterbed mattress on Freecycle. Folks on Freecycle will take anything. Craigslist also has a "free" area where you can post things to give away.
