Anyone have any luck selling a small diamond? I have one that is between .3 and .5 and would like to sell it. I am sure it is not worth much, but don't know where to start except for a pawn shop. I can't imagine they would offer much.

Thanks,
Laine

Honestly diamonds have no resale value at all. for a diamond that small you'll get MAYBE a $100 possibly much less. You could call around to local jewelers some buy as well as sell.

I wouldn't say even $100 you'd be lucky to get $30. Used to be diamonds never lost value but sadly that's not the case anymore. No one is looking for diamonds at the moment, sorry.

I'd try ebay or Craigslist. How is the diamond set? Is it just a loose diamond?

I have to giggle-- when we were shopping for my engagement ring, all the jewelry stores told us that diamonds never, everrrr lose their value. It's amazing what they'll tell you to get a sale.

Sorry but had to say that's not the case. DH's business is doing great - in fact they just sold a HUGE($$$$) stone to someone. Diamonds are still in demand. But I agree you don't get what you think when you try to resell them.

We'll have to agree to disagree. There's a big difference between a business selling a huge stone and the average customer trying to sell sell their modest piece.

I wouldn't think resale of diamonds would ever be high, due to people trying to pass fake diamonds. I would never buy one from Craigslist or Ebay. Pawn shop my be the only option, but that's a really small stone so you will probably not get much.

I see big diamonds auctioned off every week, 20-25% of appraisal will keep the dealers out of the bidding unless it's something like a nice Riviera necklace that they can break up and resell as individual rings. And those are good quality diamonds. If you have a loose diamond that small with no certification you might want to try and convince a friend or relative to take it off your hands and have it put into a setting.

I have to agree with all above except for resale if your diamond is under .05 pt its worth about 5 dollars if your really lucky I'm being honest a jeweler can get average small diamonds for very little even if they are high caliber stones. Jewelry is on average a 300% markup so when you buy something make sure you love it. The only time jewelry has true monetary value is when your buying The Harry Winstons and truly large nearly flawless or really rare stones or limited edition pieces made by very well known and famous designers. But the stuff you buy at the mall even at cartier or tiffany is only worth what its worth to you.

I sold my engagement ring for about $250 on ebay. It was about .33 solitaire on a plain 6 prong ring.

I also sold a 3 diamond ring for $575, I think the total weight was .7 The detail was a little more ornate, gold with white gold scroll work.

The jeweler gave me an estimate of $100 for the both.

Definitely try ebay. You can always put a reserve on if you want at least a certain amount.

This was about 8 months ago though, but might be worth a shot.

I think I misread your post. Are you selling a half carat .5? if its a half carat and its a really good stone you could get something if its a really good stone but its the smaller stone I thought you posted I wouldn't hold out for much.

Have it appraised by a reputable jeweler and sell it on eBay or even through a local classified ad if you want the best price. Include the appraisal certificate with the sale. You're going to get very little at a pawn shop or jewelry store. My cousin recently sold her 1/2 carat engagement ring. She got $150 from the jeweler, which was mostly for the value of the gold it was set in.

I just posted that because you said no one was buying- in actuality there are people still buying.

I too have a nice 1/2 karat clear cut pear shape and its hard to sell, very hard for me to get a clear picture of it to sell. I tried craiglist and got people wanting to give me $50 which is a joke maybe ill try e-bay

Even in the worst of times there are always some people buying. But at this point in time it is definitely a buyers market and I would not want to be in the position of having to sell anything, I don't care if it's a diamond, a house or anything that was once considered rare or collectible as opposed to something like food or an item considered as a maintenance item. People will spring for a new roof before they will spring for a new necklace. That's just common sense.

The price of your diamond will be determined by its cut, clarity, ctw, symmetry, polish, certified or not and by whom, appraised or not. You should check out pricescop dot com. This is not a place to sell but a place to learn. Try the rocky talky section. Good luck.

Do not try Craig'list. Someone here on our area. She posted a diamond ring for sale and when someone came to look They robbed the family and the husband ended up dying[shot]. Just be very careful. i would use a jewelry store or pawn shop. This is occurring more and more.

I agree that you'd be lucky to get $30 for it. We have a beautiful diamond bridal set with colorless and near flawless diamonds from DH's previous relationship 15 years ago. We took it to a reputable jeweler and he offered us $286 but that was mostly for the gold and a few bucks for the diamond. We tried to sell it on eBay for 1/4 of what DH paid (which was over $2400) and there were no takers. Zero. Zip. So, I've decided to keep it and have the diamonds reset into a right hand ring for out 10 year anniversary. Jewelers will tell you that a diamond's value never decreases when you are looking to buy, but when you are looking to sell they are worth next to nothing.

ETA: I should have said we listed it for a lot less than 1/4 of what DH paid.
