Sell Me on Boma

Kind of interested myself since I am a picky eater. My BIL just got back and ate there He LOVED it, and like me is a meat and taters person...:goodvibes

Sorry - we hate Boma! Tried it again a month or so ago, after all the rave reviews but we felt the same as we did 3-4 years ago, so won't be back.

I won't sell you on Boma - I'm not a huge fan, but I'll tell you what I think.

The resort is beautiful and worth a trip in itself.

The buffet is extensive. No one can say there isn't enough food or enough kinds of food.

The restaurant is noisy and crowded.

Food quality is good for a buffet - but keep your expectations reasonable. Some people love the food here, but I was very disappointed the first time based on reviews that really sold me on the food here being great. Its good buffet food.

There are a number of stations - one will have kids food (like chicken fingers and mac n cheese). You'll find buffet standard basics that rotate - like prime rib and salmon. These may be slightly unusually spiced, but not so much that they would scare off any but the most timid eaters (if anything, one of my disappointments in Boma is it doesn't take risks). Another will have a number of salads - unusual ones like watermelon rind or couscous, and a ceasar salad. There are a number of soups on any given night that are definately worth trying. Plus an extensive selection of buffet desserts (i.e. you'll take several, they are small) including the famous "zebra domes" which are a mocha mousse in a chocolate dome shell.

This is one of the few non-signature places where we will eat dinner. I like BOMA. Alot. We are a group which is mixed between extremely adventurous and very picky. BOMA suits the needs of the group. It's not relaxing or quiet but how many WDW eateries are? The food is good. I love everything on the meat station. There is a lot of variety and the side sauces can appeal to the adventurous while leaving it plain appeals to the picky people. The soups are very good and some are quite different. I'm very partial to the coconut one myself. There are plenty of side dishes where one can experiment or play it safe. And sorry, but I do like the dessert station. Having at least 10 different mini desserts that I can stack on one plate and sample appeals to me a great deal.

The stations are kept stocked, the service to clear the empty plates has always been quick. It's a good place for families with young children. The place has a nice decor that is different and it's always a treat to visit the AKL which is a beautiful resort.

We didn't care for it. We went in expecting it to be better than Tusker House's new buffet, and it wasn't. Plus, it was noisy and chaotic, and the service wasn't all it could have been.

How about six different dinners with various people. We had picky eaters, we had vegetarians, we had carnivores, we had people who looked at the menu and said "ew", we had young people, we had old people, we had middle age people, we had people who I wouldn't even show the menu to before we went.

Six different dinners. Six dinners where every single one of us rolled out the door from eating so much.

If you go into the place thinking it's going to be "weird", then it will be. If you go into the place needing to be "sold", then you probably won't like it. But if you go into the place with a fresh attitude, then you might just enjoy yourself.

We went & DH loved it. DD also enjoyed - she could choose what she wanted & enjoyed the puddings too! There was a lot of choice.

The chicken pepper pot soup was great.

Why do you need to be sold on it?

I like Boma, but I've heard plenty of DISers who didn't. If you need to be sold, then maybe this isn't the choice for you.

Boma alternates M/W/F and T/Th/Sat (not sure about Sunday's menu). I think the T/TH menu is better, so a menu item described may not be offered on the day youa re there.

One of the reasons I like it so much is that they have a number of interesting salad options and fresh fruit. They regularly have a mesclun baby salad, a spinach salad, a fruit salad. They regularly have fresh strawberries, grapes, pineapple, etc. They also have four soups each night; some are better than others.

If you don't eat fresh fruit and veggies at home, you might not like it. If after a week at WDW, like me, you crave fresh fruit and something other than iceburg, you may enjoy it. I'm not normally a big buffet lover - but part of the reason I often hate them is that often the offerings are all white or beige, bland, and greasy. Often the only buffet 'colors' are the red dye in the jello (I recently saw a buffet with that ambrosia salad from the 70's - jello and marshmellows - I thihght that recipe died in the 80's! but I digress.) Boma is different in that many of the offerings are naturally colorful foods.

The dessert offerings also vary. I can't say there are any super wows! but there are lots of small tart-sized options to sample.

Thanks for all the input. It sounds like you either love it or hate it. I'm excited, though, I love buffets and different types of food, so it sounds fun!

And we also have a Vegan preference. We have been there several times and have always loved it !
The chef will and does make you something special according to your dietary
needs and wants.
Boma is not to be missed when you are visiting WDW.

:cool1:

We wouldn't even CONSIDER missing Boma on a trip to the World! While it's not our number one favorite place to eat, it's certainly in the top five.

What we did the first time was simple. We have two kids-girls, 8 and 10. We just said for the first trip up to the "buffet," you can only get things you have never had before. Just try a little bit of a whole bunch of new and unique things. If you don't like it, don't eat the rest of it. But try a bunch of things.

Then after that, get whatever else you want. Funny enough, the kids found three or four new things that they wanted more of, in addition to the prime rib, chicken, etc....

Worked out great for us, and we all really look forward to it now!

We just had our first Boma experience last week and we loved it!

Lots of food choices and a great variety of typical buffet food and african flair.

There were a few things I didn't care for (strictly due to food preferences and I am a picky eater), but I found more than enough to eat. The desserts were the best we had at WDW all week!

The restaurant was a bit darkly lit and noisy, but for some reason we still found it very comfortable.

This will definately be a must do for our trips to come.

My suggestion is to give it a try-it's a unique dining experience that should be tried at least once (IMHO). & even if you don't care for the african dishes, I can pretty much garuntee that you will be able to find enough "regular food" you do like to make up for it.

Have fun on your trip!!

I agree completely so I am just going to quote this post and say YES
