I've just noticed that I have a carton of heavy cream in the fridge, with a sell by date of July 7th on it :scared1: Since I usually use this stuff up quickly I'm not sure how long it will last for after the "sell by" date. Does anyone know how long this stuff usally lasts for after the "sell by" date?

Thank you!:)

I don't think I'd go more than a week beyond the sell by date. But like other milk products, when it goes bad, you'll notice a change in the smell (it will get sour) and that it gets lumpy.

If it still smells okay and it isn't curdled it should be fine to use. I'd use it up right away though. A quick use - make butter. Just put it in your mixer or blender with a scant teaspoon of salt per pint of cream and blend on highest speed until it turns to butter (past whip cream to chunky). It usually takes about 4 of 5 minutes. Use paper towels or cheese cloth to squeeze out the butter milk. Since the cream is past the sell by date I would discard the buttermilk unless you want to make pancakes with it. You can make fun shaped pats of butter with cookie cutters.

Whipping cream has a lot of fat in it, so it keeps longer than milk. It should be fine. Whipping cream NEVER hangs around my house for long, DH will put it in his coffee if he finds it!

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service:

* Milk is good for about a week after the sell-by date.

* Eggs can keep for three to five weeks beyond the sell-by date.

* Fresh chicken, turkey, and ground meats should be cooked or frozen within two days.

* Fresh beef, pork and lamb should be cooked or frozen within three to five days.

In my experience, ultra-pasteurized dairy products (most cream is ultra-pasteurized) can sometimes be good for weeks after they are opened, even if they are well past their sell-by date.

Use it for scalloped potatoes. I use about 7 medium potatoes for a pint of whipping cream, any left over meat (ham or hamburger) and add a can of cream of mushroom soup.

It's amazing how long whipping/heavy cream lasts. I've had cartons that were at least one month past the due date and they were fine.

Just smell and taste them if you are unsure.

i had no idea you could do that! i just tried it, and it is amazing. i feel a little like a pioneer woman, making my own butter:goodvibes

You can also get some clean baby food jars or spice jars and shake it tll it turns to butter. This is something that kids love to do.
