I totally agree! I used to love doing that "Do you mind taking a photo of me and my family and I can take a picture of you and yours?" It's like we only want human interaction...through social media
"Used to love"? Are you no longer doing this, for some reason?
You know, you can still do the "Do you mind taking a photo of me and my family and I can take a picture of you and yours?" No one's stopping you. We do it ourselves, and I suspect most selfie stick users would be perfectly happy to take a picture of you and your family, without expecting anything in return.
I got really awesomely lucky last trip. We had breakfast at Tusker House, and when the characters showed up, I did the "Do you mind taking a photo of me and my family and I can take a picture of you and yours?" thing to an older couple at the next table over (the cast member wasn't nearby). Turns out the fellow is a retired professional photographer! The photos he took of us with our cheap little digital were tons better than anything the cast member managed. I only hope the ones I took of him were acceptable (his camera was a bit intimidating).
Our other favourite game is to spot folks taking pictures of each other, and offer to take one of both of them together. We don't expect anything in return (a lot of the time, we don't even bring our own camera to the parks!). And sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say no.
Selfie sticks aren't going to take away from this sort of thing, especially as only a minority of folks ever use them anyway.
