Selfie Stick bans

I totally agree! I used to love doing that "Do you mind taking a photo of me and my family and I can take a picture of you and yours?" It's like we only want human interaction...through social media

"Used to love"? Are you no longer doing this, for some reason?

You know, you can still do the "Do you mind taking a photo of me and my family and I can take a picture of you and yours?" No one's stopping you. We do it ourselves, and I suspect most selfie stick users would be perfectly happy to take a picture of you and your family, without expecting anything in return.

I got really awesomely lucky last trip. We had breakfast at Tusker House, and when the characters showed up, I did the "Do you mind taking a photo of me and my family and I can take a picture of you and yours?" thing to an older couple at the next table over (the cast member wasn't nearby). Turns out the fellow is a retired professional photographer! The photos he took of us with our cheap little digital were tons better than anything the cast member managed. I only hope the ones I took of him were acceptable (his camera was a bit intimidating).

Our other favourite game is to spot folks taking pictures of each other, and offer to take one of both of them together. We don't expect anything in return (a lot of the time, we don't even bring our own camera to the parks!). And sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say no.

Selfie sticks aren't going to take away from this sort of thing, especially as only a minority of folks ever use them anyway.

Oh we just came back and so many people I saw taking photos and I took for them and they me.

I HATE SELFIE STICKS oh man when you see the fireworks or shows and they all come up its probably the most annoying thing ever...why do you feel the need to record this they have a beautiful show on YouTube you can watch at anytime.

Yea I still do it but not as much anymore. I have some paranoia handing someone my phone to take pictures so I still do it but not as much. It was easier back in the day when we used disposable cameras.

Also a hazard where people walk around with selfie stick out front as they narrate their travels through the park. I saw a lot of that 2 years ago before the ban. The sticks are being held and swung around right at head height for kids who would be prone to walk into them.. safety hazard.

So, if the "Pinocchio Nose" selfie stick doesn't sell, Disney should market the "Darth Kodak" selfie stick that looks just like a Sith's lightsaber...

Maybe pick up some at your local Walmart? http://www.walmart.com/c/ep/disposable-cameras (Don't get the cheapest, I have it on good authority that some of your photos may not develop, and do try to use it up before the end of your vacation - they don't keep.)

I thought of everyone on this thread tonight. I was at my 4 year old daughter's preschool graduation (yes, they do that in PA). My in-laws came to watch. I was standing at the back taking pictures so I wouldn't be in anyone's way. My FIL proceeds to pull out his ipad to start taking pictures and video. I looked at my husband and made a "are you kidding me" face. DH just shrugged his shoulders. The only good thing is that he wasn't in anyone's way. I couldn't believe it! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

He was one of those people that drive me crazy in that moment. I really do like the guy about 95% of the time.:thumbsup2

Hope I'm not adding old news, but when we were there last week there was a "No Selfie stick" Sign at BTMR, and the Jungle Cruise operator announced No Selfie sticks.

I don't need a selfie stick. I had my left arm surgically altered so it's 5 feet long!

Ban that, Disney!!

I'm not a selfie stick user but I would almost prefer that I take a regular selfie of me and my group (depending on the amount of people) instead of a stranger doing it because most people have terribly photography skills lol
which I learned this past weekend at an event I was at with a friend... I wanted to do a selfie in front of a certain object and we had been chatting with some people next to us for awhile (we were standing in a line) and one person asked if we wanted them to take the photo for us. so of course we say yes. then we take one for them. My photo of them was really good - nice up close shot while also showing the item in the background we wanted. Theirs - super far away - which i was able to crop but still not the exact composition i was going for.
And then you can't exact ask them to retake it because then you feel rude.

Glad they are banned mainly for the people using them on rides. All that would need to have happen is have someone pull one out to take a picture not realizing a bridge or overhang is approaching, the thing snaps off and smacks someone behind them. Not to mention the simple fact it blocks people's views. I don't understand this obsession with selfies anyway. Off rides it is one thing IF used when stationary. Not walking around because if you are concentrating on the camera and not the crowds .....

I'm a photographer, and I have to say, there are times when yes, you truly need to just put down the camera and enjoy the experience. You truly do lose something when watching behind a lens/screen.
I totally hear you on this one. My kids are young 5 and 2. 5 yr old is going on trip number 10 in a week and each trip I try soooo hard to take less pics cause how many Cinderella pics with Kate can you have, but it's so hard cause I want to see them grow up in Disney. I will say each trip I try to set photo goals for myself vs living behind no the lens of how many daytime castle pics do you need. Last trip was dark ride pics. A trip before that was more detailed close ups of certain architecture. My picture counts have deff decreased over the years, but I still shoot away when it comes to my kids. When you are a pro or a hobbiest its so hard not to shoot like mad in a place like Disney.

I will say I take little to none parade or fireworks pics cause I do just want to enjoy the moment. Most of my pics are of the kids before. If I do take a parade shot its a certainty n shot I wanted before hand like of a certain character or float or aspect of a float.
