Seems that this time there really ARE serious concerns about Disney World..

The Federal Aviation Administration Tuesday announced that aircraft flying in the New York City and Washington, D.C. areas, and near Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and Disneyland in Anaheim, California, will be restricted. Unless commercial or private pilots are granted specific exemptions from air traffic controllers, no flights are allowed within a 3-mile radius around the parks or below 3,000 feet.

Just read this on CNN and about fell out of my chair!! This is the first time I have ever heard anything SPECIFIC in terms of needing to protect the parks and it scares the living daylights out of me!!

Where do you find this info? I would love to know if Boston is on the list too. Atleast it would be a load of my mind if it is not there. Hey, I can think of bigger targets than WDW and DL, if you want to hurt people.

Go to cnn.com and then click on the raised threat level story.. I didn't see Boston specifically listed there..

This is too scary.. :(

I think WDW is a target because of the symbolism. Just like the Pentagon and WTC, WDW is pure USA. :(

I just heard economic destruction.

Let me tell, you: if Saddam does anything to WDW, he better watch out because there are enough of us on the board to kick his b***! Just let us at him! I may be "only" 5' 0', but boy do I have a temper. I will have him shaking in his shoes. (Although, my students used to laugh when I told them they should be shaking in their shoes)

Can you imagine the kind of impact these very specific flight restrictions will have on attendance at Disney World? It was bad enough when people kind of came to the conclusion that it might be a target on their own, but for these restrictions to actually be imposed by homeland Security and the FAA - well - that puts a whole new light on things.. :(

I don't like this one bit, but quite frankly, I can't think of a better way to REALLY hurt Americans than by hurting our CHILDREN..:(

could it be possible that disney approached the government about this, instead of their being a specific threat?

I didnt think anyone could fly over Disney before. Am I crazy or did someone elce know that too?
{{{Hugs}}} to everyone.
I am praying for everyone.

Any attack in WDW, whether large or small, would drastically hurt the tourism economy and further terrorize families. It would be an easy way to destroy the economy further by making Americans feel unsafe at previously safe, happy spots.

Barring anything MAJOR, we will STILL be at WDW on the FOURTH OF JULY!! Celebrating America. Supporting Americans.

God Bless us all.

Love,
Karen

we are going to Disney in less then a week and a half and I have to fly......okey that is one of my hurdles.....I am already terrified to fly..so just add this alert to it.....I am still going ....My husband works for a major company that makes ships for the Navy....his area is already a target....so that is that....we are leaving on a jet plane and we will go to Disney and I will hug my mouse....that is that...

You go girl!! Saddam best not mess with the irate flying pig, right? :)

Seriously though....hug the mouse for me too, willya?

I think most of us in our daily lives go to places that could be likely targets. WDW is a known American Icon and known to be places where there are lot of people and children, but so are big Malls, Government buildings, Sports Stadiums and Convention Centers.

They are being smart keeping planes away...but we need to go on with our lives here, be smart and stay alert but do not cancel any plans.

Hope everyone has great trips!!!

You are right that Disney has always controlled its own airspace and that planes are not supposed to fly over anyway. I can't remember where I read it besides here on the DIS but I know that it is true.

I thought that was the rule too from a long time ago. I can't remember ever seeing a plane flying low over WDW, like a private plane.

The airspace over Disney was restricted after 9/11 also. THis will have no impact on flights into or out of MCO. This is just part of the code orange. I don't think that it is anything to panic over.

OK!! Deep breaths everybody!....
airspace over DL and WDW have for sometime been considered 'restricted'....the "news" is that private pilots in general or civil avaiation will not be permitted to overfly these locations.....there are NO crediable threats against the parks...the government (under some pressure from company senior management) want to make as sure as possible that folks feel safe visiting the parks.

and HELLO...."flying" has NEVER been SAFER in the US then now! :)

I'm sure BIW will be just fine! :)

I wouldn't worry about anything falling out of the skies at WDW or DL, but I would worry about someone bringing something into the parks. Unless we all have to go through the same procedures at WDW that we do at the airports - screening for explosives, weapons, powders etc. etc.. it seems to me that anything is possilbe at anytime.

Nothing is going to stop me from going to WDW or anywhere else because anything can happen, at anytime, at any place, no matter what precautions we take. :) To paraphrase something from one of my favorite movies: " ..You either get busy living or you get busy dying." :) I'm gonna live as long and as happily as I can! :bounce: :bounce: That doesn't mean I'm not scared and if something were to happen, I may not want to leave my house let alone the safety of my own backyard. :( It just means that this terrorist stuff can bring me down, but I'm going to try my hardest not to let it keep me down. :)

My theory is that when it is time for me to "go", I will and I'm not going to worry about it. That said, I'm not going to go lie down in the middle of the freeway.

I do intend to go to WDW as soon as school is out!
