Seeking for the classic advice

Hey all!

I'm currently planning for a 2014 WDW trip. I need the classic advice of "when to go" from you savvy Dis-ers Here's my situation:

I'm from Indonesia, so you'd understand that this trip will be expensive and probably once-in-a-looongtime (lifetime?). I know it's impossible to create a PERFECT Disney trip, but I want to try my best.

Coming from one of the hottest and most humid part of Asia, I don't mind Florida's heat and rain. What's important for me are low crowds and low rates. Obviously, September is a good choice.

BUT! September is the hurricane season. I don't know exactly how's the hurricane situation in Orlando in previous years, but I can't afford to make last-minute changes during the trip because of weather situation. If I go in Sept, I assume the the possibility of my flight being canceled / delayed is pretty big. Waaah. It'd be a major pain for me, because of my international, multi-connecting flights.

Still, the lure of low crowd & rates of September is very tempting.

I'm asking this on the Australian board, hoping to get a 'closer to home' advice. Has anyone go in September and experienced major holdup due to weather?

We went at the end of September almost two years ago. Yes, it was hot and humid!

On the flights, we flew Sydney to Dallas, then a new flight into Orlando. The flight to Orlando was pretty much on time, arriving Orlando about 8.30pm. According to the flight crew they said a storm had just cleared in Orlando and the flight before us was delayed two hours getting in.

On the way back we were delayed out of Orlando, though due to mechanical problems with the plane, the weather was perfect.

Orlando is about 60km? inland so cyclones would be broken up a bit by the time they got there. I know a lot of us have been in September and I don't think there have been too many issues caused by tropical weather, maybe someone else can jump in

hi. we have been twice sept/oct and had no issues with the weather, and we are planning for the same time in 2014. crowd wise it is pretty good and also coincides with school holidays in australia, so for us that is a must. having read other people trip reports i think that rain is the only real issue, but the best bet is to wait for sept this year and check out all the trip reports from the aussies coming back, there are a lot going this year.

Good point, thanks. Another question: in Sept, do fireworks shows often cancelled due to weather? This happens a few times in Tokyo and HK Disneyland, esp Tokyo

We went for three weeks in Sept (early Oct) and I don't recall the fireworks being cancelled due to the storms. The storms seem to happen like they do here in Australia (and I remember them in Singapore too I think) where they seem to commonly happen mid to late afternoon, not so much late at night.

Also you really don't need to worry about Hurricanes. They have had a couple I believe at WDW, but no major damage and parks only closed for a day or so. The thing with the Hurricanes is that WDW is really prepared for them and they are also built for them. I have read that many locals actually leave their homes and go to WDW in the event that a hurricane is approaching as it's the safest place to be. They keep you locked up in your resorts, provide food and entertainment. It's all apparently very orderly. They are extremely rare though at WDW. Not something that you'd worry about. I'd book morning flights if you are worried about cancellations due to weather. You'd really only have to worry about afternoon storms. I've always flown out in the afternoon and not had a problem. More chance of getting a cancellation due to weather out of DFW. Thing is, in the US, there are cancellation everywhere due to weather. It's just the luck of the draw wether it be snow, rain, storm, tornado etc.

We live in North Qld so our climate is very similar to yours. Have you considered going in late November/early December? That's when we are going and it's supposed to be pretty good crowd wise and weather wise. We went to DLR/DCA at the same time in 2011 and it was almost crowd free. Most of the time we rode our favourite rides repeatedly with barely a wait.

Hope you have a great time planning your holiday; what ever time you decide to go. September is a time where its almost a mass exodus of Aussies to head to the US. It corresponds with school holidays here; so we will travel during that time.

If you aren't constrained by time, Oct/Nov might be better if you're really worried about hurricanes.

Besides September, I've decided that my other choice of dates are in late Oct to early Nov, and mid Nov (after Jersey week / Vet day, before Thanksgiving). Have checked the prices, of course they can't compete with Sept's. No certain decision yet, but I'm currently leaning towards those dates now

we travel sept/oct but love the pool etc so thats a great time for us. I have also traveled the first 2 weeks of december, a bit cooler, christmas decorations are up and crowds are low, as is resort prices......

and yes, I think there are more aussies than americans sometimes at WDWwe love our mouse!
