Safety Tip # 2: See something, Say something!

We cast members here at Disney World are committed to your safety. Safety is our number one concern and we will do everything in our power to make sure that Disney World remains a safe place for everyone. But here at Disney World, even though you (the guests) are on vacation at the happiest place on earth, doesn't mean that accidents DO NOT happen. Most people are surprised when we say that. Of course we want our world to be one like no other. We want our world to be different, where nothing goes wrong, where fantasy takes over and reality disappears, at least for a little while. But even in a perfect world, things go wrong. People misbehave, things happen, and people can get hurt. The reason you see it happen so little and most of the time, not at all, is because when something DOES happen, all 60,000 of us spring into action to make sure each situation is resolved promptly, efficiently and completely.

What is the point of me telling you all of this? Well, I am here to help you, the guest, help us out! It's not the responsibility of only cast members to keep our world safe, it is yours as well. If you see your child sitting on a rope or up high where it is possible for them to be injured if they fall, prevent it! Get that child off that rope! Do the attractions cast members a favor and buckle up your seat belt and make sure that lap bar is good and secured! Do the custodial cast members a favor and walk a few extra feet to put the trash in the trash can. But it stems into much more than that. We simply ask that if you see a safety concern, to please report it to the nearest Cast Member or member of security. If you see an "unattended bag", unattended meaning that no one is near it, it is not with a stroller and just seems to be sitting there as if it decided to plop itself down on the bench or ground looking to cause trouble, report it! If you see a person acting suspiciously, report it! It doesn't take much to help keep the world around you safe.

These are all pretty basic things that most people on a famous Disney
vacation tend to overlook. They think that this place is "Disney World.... where NO ONE gets hurt no matter what they do". Wrong! This place, as perfect as we would like it to be, is as real as they come. Safety concerns stem from all over the place. We simply ask that as a Walt Disney World Resort guest, that you help us keep the world and all of the guests and cast members within safe. If you see something, take a few minutes out of your day to say something! It could mean the difference between a good day and a bad day! Thanks for reading and have a magical day!

Good post! Sometimes people just need to be reminded to use their common sense!

I saw a bookbag alone at the mailbox to Mickey's house in Toontown during our last trip.

The closest employee I found was working the Barnstormer. I told the employee about the unattended bag. She stared at me blankly. I told her maybe she should contact security. I don't know if she ever did.

The only time I ever saw something I thought of as a safety issue, I end up talking to someone who had no clue how to handle the situation. *sigh*

I am not sure what is the purpose of this thread at all, except stating Safety Rules everyone knows anyway. Why someone with 20 posts feels the need to teach us what we know already.:confused3
BTW, are you suggesting that attraction CM should not check seat belts and rely on me buckling up? That is NOT SAFE, the very thing you are talking about.

That's weird. Maybe she was a new cast member who has just started or maybe she was just unsure of how to handle that type of situation. But I know that we all have a specific procedure on how to handle unattended bags. And I also speak for everyone in this post. Please, before you get up from a restaurant, taking a break, leaving the bathroom, exiting a ride or an attraction, etc... Please make sure that you have EVERYTHING with you including any bags! All unattended bags are brought to the attention of park security. If the bag is not claimed within 10 minutes of security arrival, the bag will be subject to further examination and confiscation. I personally do not know what happens to the bag after security gets a hold of it but I can't imagine that you will have a very pleasant experience in the re-claiming of that bag. Just do yourself a favor and make sure you have ALL bags that you carried in with you on your person or in your possession at ALL times. If you have a stroller, you can leave the bag with the stroller but make sure your more valuable items are with you and not in your unsupervised bag!

The purpose of this thread and every other thread that I post is to help inform people about safety and how to stay safe. No one said you have to like them. No one said you even have to read them. You seem quite offended by my presence. Unfortunately not everyone knows about smart safety and especially when they are on vacation where they expect that nothing bad will happen to them no matter what they do and the fact that their ability to act foolish will some how be OK. The simple fact remains that not everyone is aware of how to act and stay safe in our Disney parks. A lot of people lose sight of any responsibility when they are on a Disney vacation and expect Disney Cast Members to take complete care of them. I am here to help people realize that safety is the responsibility of everyone, not just Disney Cast Members. The amount of posts I have on this site does not matter and does not label me as anything. That number will quickly grow but that doesn't matter either. I am a Disney Cast Member who cares a lot about safety and I will continue to convey my tips and ideas on how to help everyone remain safe. And as far as buckling up your seat belt/putting your lap bar down on a ride, Cast Members WILL make sure that anyone getting on a ride buckles up and has their lap bar secure. You don't have to worry about that. The reason for the post is to remind you to please do it to eliminate grief for the Cast Member and to help you have that much more of an enjoyable ride, so you don't wind up holding up the ride because you refuse to put your seat belt on. That's all. Thanks for reading and have a magical day! :)

On a side note, I must mention that my purpose for being here is not to nag and not to lecture everyone about safety. I am not here to bash, I am not here to cause trouble. I am not here to make people feel bad or mad or anything negative. I am here to help simplify your vacation by giving you safety tips and ideas that may otherwise go unnoticed or overlooked. I see it happening all the time. I see so many guests arrive on their fabulous Disney vacation and expect that us Cast Members will take care of everything, including the safety of your family. While we are here to do as much as we can to ensure that you have as pleasant of a vacation as possible, I am here to mention to you that safety is the responsibility of everyone. We will keep your family safe, but we need your help too! If we all work together, we can keep everyone safe and keep the accidents and injuries and God forbid anything else that's negative from happening! Have a magical day everyone and stay safe!

I am not offended, I am confused what makes you think that people do not know safety tips or reather do not follow common sence.
When you have only 20 posts and less then a month on this board how do you know that we are not following common sence. Check all the threads on leaving things in stroller and you will know. Do you think people do not know that you suppose to buckle or lower restrain(if it is possible). Throwing garbage is not even safety issue at all. So what exactly are you talking about?
Sorry but it looks like you enter an Advanced Calculus Class and try to teach Addition/Substraction.
You can post whatever you want and yes I have every right not to read it but I also have a right to reply to your post like it or not.

I think the problem here, SafeD, is that you're kind of coming across as an Official Disney Spokesperson, and you're not. At least, I assume you're not, as we don't have any "official" Disney spokespeople on the DIS (that I'm aware of). And if you WERE an official Disney spokesperson, Company policy dictates that you would put that in your signature or profile.

There are lots of people here who are Disney CMs (including me) and who post helpful answers to Guest questions, but you're kind of taking Company policies and messages and then posting them as "helpful hints." I mean ... nothing wrong with that, of course, but the "I'm telling you something even though you haven't asked me to" nature of the posts -- along with the kind of lecturing / official tone -- are a bit off-putting. They're lengthy posts that don't necessarily come across as your own ideas. And they're just a tad bit condescending to some folks. (IMO)

If you want to post helpful info, just post it in your own words. Read through some of the question threads and answer any questions you can. Or relate a safety message within an appropriate topic (like when someone asks if it's safe enough to leave your stroller parked with stuff in it, or the post where someone specifically asks CMs to post their favorite tip).

I think your heart is in the right place, you're just approaching it a little awkwardly. :goodvibes

Exactly!:thumbsup2

Everyone, I am terribly sorry if I am coming off as a Disney Spokesperson or something along those lines. I am not a spokesperson for Disney and yes, WDSearcher, company would dictate that I should put it in my signature that I am if I was. I am a simple cast member who cares a lot about safety. I am definitely not trying to lecture anyone or tell anyone that they NEED to do anything. Every Disney vacation and how people spend it is entirely up to them and I am not trying to hinder that or make anyone's vacation less enjoyable. Further, I am not trying to tell people what they can or cannot do. I have gained permission from a Dis-boards moderator to post safety tips. That is all. The simple fact that I am an English major just helps me to convey these "tips and ideas" in great detail so everyone can really understand them. My reason for posting these safety tips and ideas is so that people can use them to their advantage to keep everyone including their own families safe. I am not saying that no one knows about these ideas already, but I know, just as you do from personal experience that safety and responsibility completely escapes people's minds when they are having fun and enjoying themselves, the same way a drunk person's attention span is gone in 5 seconds. When people are having fun, they lose themselves in it, they want to completely surround themselves in the fun that is Disney World. I am just merely trying to help keep those safety concerns and ideas fresh and in the back of everyone's mind so that they can stay safe while having fun. That's all I was really trying to do. Once again, I must mention that I have received permission from a Disboards moderator to post safety tips in these forums in certain locations. I am sorry if I made everyone mad and I will try to tone down the "I am official" tone that I seem to be conveying which I certainly was not intending to do in the first place. Sorry again everyone. Have a magical day.

I agree :confused3 but thanks for the common sense reminder, I guess..?

Everyone, please take a moment to read my latest post on this thread. Hopefully it will clear up some confusion. Sorry again everyone. Have a magical day.

Again ... no one is saying you can't or shouldn't post these things. It's just ... well ... odd. I could see you posting them in a "Safety Sticky" where people could go to find Safety tips if they needed them -- that would seem helpful and proactive. Or maybe relate a story that applies to the safety tip you're giving us. Make it seem less like you're regurgitating company policy and more like you're chatting. Read a bunch of threads and and learn the language and tone of the board. It can help those posts fit in.

And, as you are an English major, I'm assuming you also took at least one class in effective editing and probably one in "writing for your audience". :teacher: Sometimes less is more! Edit a little. (And really, "all 60,000 of us spring into action" when someone gets hurt? :goodvibes That doesn't happen. Do you know if anyone tripped and skinned their knee at DAK today? Probably not. Me neither. But the folks at DAK do. THEY sprang into action. I didn't.)

As an example, if I were to take your Safety Tip #2 and present it here, I might say:

Safety Tip # 2: See something, Say something!

Safety is a huge concern at WDW. BUT ... it's not a perfect world, and we count on Guests to be vigilant too. One of our mandates backstage is "See something, Say something." If we see someone standing tiptoe on a ladder trying to reach something, we do what we can to prevent it, whether it's acting as a spotter, getting a taller ladder or getting a taller CM! The same is true in the parks.

If you encounter a safety problem -- an unattended bag, broken piece of pavement, rough edge on an ice cream cart -- please point it out. We can't see everything all the time, so let us know. See a suspicious person? Let us know (and no ... you cannot turn in your significant other as a "shifty guest lurking by the turkey legs"). But if you do see something that doesn't look right, don't be afraid to say something. If it's nothing, then no harm done. And if it is something ... then you will have helped make everyone's vacation a little safer.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled DISing.
:thumbsup2

So ... a little shorter and sweeter ... with the same basic Safety info. But I'd still look into setting up a Sticky.

:earsboy:

A CM I spoke with in August at Epcot told me there were about 30,000 people employed at WDW, not 60,000. Anybody know which is the correct figure?

SafeD -- if you're an English major, you should know that monolithic blocks of text presented in a single giant paragraph are a no-no except when used for literary effect. Take WDSearcher's advice -- edit a bit before posting, and think about how you should split up those big paragraphs.

There are closer to 60,000 if you count parks, resorts, reservation centers, etc. 30K may be just within the parks and resorts, or it could be "full time" CMs. Hard to tell out of context.

:earsboy:

HAHA. With the 60,000 of us spring into action statement, I was trying to be a little metaphorical. I meant all 60,000 of us know how to handle a safety concern should one arise. If that makes any sense :P

As for the English major portion of it, I am simply trying to stay more relaxed on these forums as I have gathered that it is a relaxed environment. I will definitely do more editing now that it has been requested. And thank you for the advice, everyone. It is greatly appreciated and I will surely consider creating a sticky. Sorry again for all of the jumble and conveyance of the "I'm official" tone. Have a magical day everyone and happy Dis-ing!
