we're taking 2 dvd players on the flight..my dh and dd will have then in their backpacks to put on the belt for screening. do they need to be taken out and powered up (they'll be on a battery) or should we leabe them in the backpacks. I don't want to hold up the security lines, but I also don't want for US to be held up either. TIA! :)

I routinely put all our electronics in one big zip-loc baggie, and stick it in my carry-on tote bag. Then, when we get to security, I just take the plastic baggie out, and send it through on it's own. Then, once we get to the gate area, I distribute the stuff to everyone. Everything goes in there....cameras, cell phones, DVD players, playstations, batteries, chargers, IPods.

According to the TSA website:

"Place the following items IN your carry-on baggage or in a plastic bag prior to entering the screening checkpoint:
Mobile phones
Keys
Loose change
Money clips
PDA's (personal data assistants)
Large amounts of jewelry
Metal hair decorations
Large belt buckles

Take your laptop and video cameras with cassettes OUT of their cases and place them in a bin provided at the checkpoint."

So, DVD players are not in either list. The apparent theory on treating laptops diferrently than cell phones or PDAs, is that they are very dense and difficult to x-ray, so having them separate helps with the process. I don't usally travel with a DVD player, but when I have, we have not taken it out of the carry-on and we had no problems.

Bottom line, to go thru security as fast as possible, either take them out of the bag or put them in a bag alone (without any cables, wires, plugs etc.). For conveneince, leave them in the bag you pack them in, but figure that some % of time you are going to need to take them out and have them re-screened.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

TSA has specific rules.

The TSA requires you to remove laptop computers and videotape cameras from their bags or cases, and to put them into bins for the trip through the x-ray machine.

The TSA allows you to keep other portable electronic equipment — such as DVD players, iPods, digital cameras, and cell phones — in carry-on luggage or in a case. There is no reason to remove such electronic items and to put them into a bin. It only increases the chance that they will be dropped and broken.

Of course, the TSA agents at the airport can subject anyone to additional inspection.

No, I travel often with mine and they have always told me to leave it in. A few have asked while it went through X-ray if it was a dvd player.

You may want to check with your airline to see if any of the rows have power ports (cigaratte port) so that you don't have to use your battery. Also, you can use the regular power source while sitting at the airport waiting.

Thanks for information! Any loose change or barrets etc. I'll put in a baggie, but I think I'll keep the cell phone in my purse since it has to go through the machine anyway and the DVD players we'll keep in the backpacks since they have to go through too. I thought maybe we'd have to power them up or something as my BIL had to power up his laptop before. Thanks for reminding me about the power cord and being able to use it at the airport while waiting. I didn't even think about it. I always use the cord and this will be the first time we use the battery at all. I usually just plug it in at the resort or the car lighter.

Not all planes have the power ports so you may want to check. Sometimes it is only in certain rows in coach, so you may want to check..soon...incase you want to change your seating.

Also, my father in law works for the TSA as a screener and he says not to bring change (unless its only a couple) because the xray can't see through it.. It is too dense for the xray to see what is underneath so they would have to hand check your bag after. We had this conversation because last year I travelled with my aunt who brough a baggie of change (to do laundry at the resort) and it took TSA a very long time through xray, then she had to go to the side to be searched. (Can't blame them for doing there job)!

Have a Magical Day :wizard:

I would never thought of that. I rarely have much change (I usually put it in a jar for my kids for Disney and then trade it for $$. I'll be using the battery for the DVD players on the plane so power ports aren't an issue. I am doing the single digit dance :dance3: !! Wahoo! Can't wait.

I always put all my electronics in my carry-on bag (dvd player, ipod, ipod speakers, adaptors, cords) . I have never been asked to take them out. Only once did they manually inspect my bag but they didn't take anything out.

When the DVD players wern't well known they always asked for you to take them out (thinking it was a laptop) but now they are just fine leaving them in the pack .They might ask real quick if it's a lap but thats it.
