Do you still lock your luggage? Everything that is of any value will be with me in my carry on. With security the way it is, I'd rather have them take a look if they see something they can't identify.

So do you lock or not?

Bags that you check cannot be locked anymore. Process now is you check in and bags must be unlocked. Once you get tickets you then give bags to security personnel who send them through scanner and open them for inspection if they desire. You cannot touch bags at anytime after you have handed them over to security personnel. (Note system may not be up and running at all airports yet.)

Carry-on bags must be unlocked when you go through security into the gate area. You can of course lock it after you passed through security, but then they are subject to random search ar time of boarding the plane. Also, if you can, wear sneakers. Many are requiring people to take of any other shoes (even sandals) when going through security.

we use cable ties instead of locks now - that way they can be cut off by screeners easily (no broken locks) & replaced - and they're easily removed with nail clippers (we bring along little nail clippers for babies, that don't have the nail file attached)

I plan to use plastic ties. The only reason I ever locked my checked bags was to prevent the zippers from coming open during transit. The plastic ties will do this and can be cut off by security if they need to look in my bag.

Me, too - for the same reasons.

Also, I have had to remove my sneakers/athletic walking shoes when going through security. The security agent said she was checking for explosives. She didn't find any, LOL. Of course, my shoes did not then, nor do they now, contain contraband - they might have been a little "stinky", though. :o :teeth: :o

Another suggestion to the cable (zip tie) tip is to also put as many of your packed items into zip lock bags (gallon size) so that if your bags ARE checked, your items (esp. personal things) will not fall out. It also helps keeping wrinkles to a minimum.:)
