Airports - we checked in at Belfast City Airport and our hand luggage and ourselves were thoroughly checked. Each carry-on bag was opened and searched and we even had the soles of our shoes checked.
At the United gate at Heathrow, individuals were randomly taken to the side and behind screens were thoroughly searched.
On arrival at Washington DC (connecting to a flight to Orlando) we were met by armed NATIONAL GUARDS and again individuals were randomly taken to the side and thoroughly searched. DW had every inch of her scanned with a detector wand-device(!!).
In Orlando there were guards on duty again but we just picked up our bags without any delay.
The BIGGEST SHOCK was at the theme parks - especially DISNEY - there were longer queues to have bags searched than to get into the theme parks. Anyone without a bag could go straight on through -so take as little as possible with you.
This is the price we have to pay (and our glad to pay) for safe travel and enjoyment of our leisure time.
