I am having work done in my co-op (at my expense) and my building wants a check for a security deposit (not the question).

Does anyone know what I can write on the check to designate that it is a security deposit and it is to be refunded if it is mutually agreed that there was no damage done to the building that would require an additional fee? I want to make it clear that this check is for no other reason than a security deposit.

Thanks!

I don't know if you can write it on a check, but how about asking for a receipt with those terms included?

Is the subject of security deposits for repairs treated in the bylaws of your co-op? And are you writing the check to the corporation, as opposed to an individual? If so, writing "security deposit" seems like it would cover it.

If not, you might want to write up a quick note stating that the check is the requested security deposit and is to be returned or refunded within 30 days of mutual agreement that there was no damage. One handwritten sentence is just as binding as any other contract. Just make sure the person accepting the deposit signs both copies, and you keep one.
