security and keeping medicine cold ??'s

this may have been addressed before...but I can't find it. I had planned to use those ice packs that freeze solid to keep my DH's medicine cold on our flight down, on another forum someone said they won't go through security at the airport. So now I'm puzzled..how do I keep his medicine cold? It'll need to be kept cold for at least 6 hours. I plan on buying a insulated bag to fit it into (any suggestions on the best one?) - in fact, I'm hoping to get his nebulizer, non-ref. meds and the "cold" meds all in one carry-on. We need enough for two weeks.
On a lark...I thought I'd freeze some chicken solid and use that, but I'm wondering if the security people would think I was crazy (I could always tell them it's to cook down there)
Any advice you can give me with your experiences or your thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Barb

You should be able to bring on your gel pack along with your medicine.

"You may bring all prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including petroleum jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes."

"Gels or frozen liquids needed to cool disability or medically related items used by persons with disabilities or medical conditions."

You can definitely take gel packs, frozen packs, ice packs, etc. through security to keep meds cold. When you go to the security checkpoint, have all of your medical items together (any meds over the 3 oz limit and the cold packs/ice) and tell the security person that there are meds in there over the limit (if they are) and/or the cold packs/ice. They usually ask me to put the bag on the scanner with the other carry on stuff and sometimes they will search it on the other side.

Obviously if the lines are divided into "express" and "people needing more time" - I go through the "more time" line - cause I have kids too. I prefer to show up early and not feel rushed. I love it when airports let you que like that....not all do.

Remember that on the way back, unless you have a freezer at your hotel, you can't refreeze the packs. The little fridges in the WDW hotels don't have freezers. I generally will use ice in a ziploc or other container.

We were toild to have a note from our DR. that the medicine needed to be kept cold and to put that with the gel packs and medicine. We did this and no one questioned us, so it must have worked. Good luck!

I tend do do about five air round trips per year. I carry an assortment of medicines, including two type of insulin as well as a Byetta pen. I do not have anything with prescription labels, and my pills are packed by day, not by type.

I have never been challanged at any airport.

Also, for several years I have used Frio Cold Packs (see www.coolerconcept.com ) which are gel packs activated or reactivated just by using water.

Maybe I just got lucky... but I used those cutesy lunchbox ice packs. The plastic ones with smiley faces or soccer balls like you buy at WalMart. Nobody cared.
