Security and cargo shorts?

You should be opening every zipper before you get to the head of the table. That is part of the reason the lines are held up.

This was the 1st time we encountered bag check, we hadn't been to the parks in years, we had no idea what it all involved.
After that 1st time, we changed so that we no longer used a backpack, although I don't think we can avoid it for the MK since you really don't have quick access to your car to store things like at Epcot, HS or AK.
We are searching for a single pocket sort of backpack to use in the future.

Yes, as long as it's not in a glass container.

Thank you. I keep my large DD plastic cups for when I travel (and also sometimes my store sells them to me for about .10-.25 cents, depending who is behind the counter). I then can make my ice coffee in the mornings to take to the parks and throw away. I also use them at night so appreciate your letting me know.

I'm pretty sure they only want you to remove the metal items. That's all that's really necessary

They tell you multiple times to empty your pockets. That means everything.
Oh yeah, they really want the line (when there is one) to be held up for extended periods of time while people open every pocket getting every tissue, every advil, wallet, eyedrop container, notes, pens, etc etc etc....You really think they care about all that?

Bag might be easier than stuffing cargo shorts if there's a chance they may check you anyway. I had my family put everything in the bag - phones, sunglasses, wallets etc so that all of our stuff was in one place. They went through the bagless line and I met them on the other side.

As crowded as the bag check lines appear I don't think I ever waited more than 5 minutes this past July. It can seem like eternity but it's really not bad. I made sure all compartments were open and easily accessible before I got to the guard. Pretty sure I went through the metal detector every time as well which took about 10 seconds.

No it does not. I have several non-metal items I bring in that I do not remove. Eyeglass cleaning cloth, lip stick, plastic pill container, and my ID pouch (cloth with a nylon zipper). I put all non-metal in 1 pocket and all metal in another. I grab all that is metal out, (I do this as we are walking) put it in the bin and walk through and then take my stuff and put it back in my pocket, most of the time without breaking stride. When they get a back up of any sort at the metal detectors they don't even pull guests in to them. We've only gone through them at Epcot or MK from the Monorail or boats. Any other times don't go through at all. And I use the same process at Universal by the way, where everyone does go through.

Is there an official The Dis fanny pack?
I'm sure there could be one designed with little effort :)

I'm starting a rumor that Security won't check Fanny Packs and you'll be able to walk right through the no bag line.

If this rumor catches on we could see literally thousands of fanny-pack-wearers at WDW!
Shoot, there seems to be a run of people wearing cargo shorts.

Stuff those pockets full. See, no bags.

I used to go bagless all the time before the metal detectors, but now I wear a small crossbody bag that holds a compact wallet, phone and a few Wet Ones. As most of my trips are solo, I don't have a second set of eyes to keep an eye on things as I go through the detectors. With the small bag, the valuables aren't in full view. When I went bagless, I carried the phone in one pocket, the wallet in another and the wipes in a third pocket. None of the pockets bulged at all and I never got rerouted to bag check. I think so long as when they glance at your pockets they have a pretty good idea of what's in them (I.e., that is a phone bump, that is a wallet bump, etc.) you won't have any issues.
