Securing valuables while at park?

which safe are you fitting your notebook computers in?
I've never been able to get them to fit in the room safes?

Thanks

I was able to fit my 17" laptop into the safe at SSR.

This June DD and I are going to BCV and I was wondering what the size of the safe was there. I will probably bring my 14" laptop and hope it fits.

I also believe in using a Laptop Lock cable. I lock the key in the safe, and take the safe key with me.

While it won't stop any one that wants to take your laptop, it does remove the opportunity to quickly slip it into a bag and walk out with it. A lot of thefts are thefts of opportunity (someone sees a chance to grab something and they do.)

One idea.... they make a cable lock with a combination. I recommend that. I have seen what happens when you lose the key. (Which is one reason I trust these locks, we did eventually free the laptop but it was a LOT of work and mess and not something someone doing "opportunity" theft would take the time to do:thumbsup2 )

In 2004 DH and I were on our honeymoon and left straight from our reception to the airport. When we arrived I was still wearing my "wedding jewelry" any way, I took off my diamond bracelet set it on the table and there it stayed. Two other families stayed in that room and just left the bracelet on the table thinking the housekeeper left it accidentally. It was returned to me within a week. Ever since then I don't really lock up anything other then wallets while we are swimming. Then we were not DVC members and were staying at French Quarter. I am usually not concerned too much about my laptop, or iPods.

Be aware of your medicine. We had some of my sons asthma medicine disappear while we awere at the parks one day. I turned the room upside down looking for it. I was not convinced anyone woould have taken it. Since it was at the start of our trip, I hoped we just left it at home. To my dismay, it was not home. I would never think to lock up medicine, but now I will.

I had the very same thing happen on a cruise, It was Loritab. Now, I lock my pain killers up in the safe. I lock bigger items up in my suitcase, every morning. I will not leave my room without doing this! I take a fanny pack with camera, necessary things for the day. I reload it every night. I hate that it takes extra time in the morning, but better to be safe than sorry. Oh, I take the key to the safe with me. ;) We did walk out once... had left the key... had to turn around from the bus stop and go get the thing.

You were very lucky. You can't rely on that happening everytime. 99 out of a 100 times it maybe OK but do you want to be that 1 time? It doesn't hurt to be cautious.

I guess since we keep everything on a flash drive our laptops don't have anything on them. I mean we don't take our expensive stuff, just the basic items. We have 4 laptops, so we don't take the new one. the flash drives are always with us. Maybe part of it is that we live in an extremely rural area surrounded by extended family, so we never worry about stuff like that. Never thought about the Meds though. Ususally we figure if it is gone we will just have to buy a new one.

I just bought at AKV and I am reading this thread and wondering?
Are the safes in the DVC resorts bigger than the ones at the value resorts? I have never stayed in anything other than a value. And the safe in a value is shallow and would not fit my laptop. It bearly fit my small valuables. In that case I took my laptop and secured it under the vanity in its case. There are all kinds of neat little hiding places. If you are in a DVC resort and know the days for housekeeping than you can leave your laptop under the pillow or hang it on a hanger in it's case and put a shirt or coat over it. These measures won't work all the time but it takes the temptations away from the casual opps I'm in the wrong room but look a laptop, or the honest person being tempted by look a laptop, my son could really use one.

:)

Sorry but I have never understood why people sit in their room without the security lock on. There are many reasons for maint. or housekeeping to enter your room. You should put your valubles in the safe or at least out of sight. If precautions are not taken to safegaurd items don't complain when they are stolen.

Fishermouse the reason I posted this is because some said with no housekeeping no one enters your room. Just wanted to let those know that someone may enter the room.

Sorry not directed at you personally, people need to be aware of room invasions etc. hotel rooms are not as safe and secure as most of our homes. Drives me nuts that people risk their's and their children's safety. PC's and cameras are easily replaced but a lot worse can and has happened in unlocked hotel rooms. We like to think Disney is different, it may be a little more secure than some places and less secure than others, but it is still part of our world, and Orlando is not a crime free zone. We always use the dead bolt and the latch, we usually put the do not disturb sign on as well

when on vacation i look forward to separating my family from both laptops & gaming systems:rolleyes1

especially when @ WDW, lots to keep even my diehard gaming teen occupied, nice break imo:thumbsup2

different story if u need laptop for work i suppose

we do all bring our cameras/sometimes camcorder & ipods & cellphone & jr's DS for plane ride;) ...not a problem stuffing it in room safe

seriously, have never stayed @ any resort that didn't have larger safes @ lobby desk:confused3when i required one ; does Disney have them?popcorn::

Ok, now I need to know. Are the safes bigger in the deluxe/DVC resorts than in the value resorts? I have only stayed in value just bought AKV.
:confused3

It is foolish to think that items are safer in your unattended van than in a locked hotel room.

Thieves target cars much more than hotel rooms.
Leave nothing in your car.

if you are concerned about your room being burglarized than hide any items that do not fit into the safe.

Put them somewhere unexpected.

Look at the room as a thief.
Where will you look first?

Bedrooom lugggae??

Hide in laudry room.
Hide in kitchen cabinets
Under sink.

Hey man,
Safe's are the same size in all the resorts. Like the previous poster stated, I would not leave anything of any value in your vehicle. We usually use the safe for jewelry, money, etc. We leave our laptop usually hooked up and on the desk everyday, except for trash and towel day, on that day we will usually put it somewhere out of sight.

No all of the safes in all of the resorts are not the same unless they changed recently. The safes are in the wall of the bathroom in the value resorts and you are lucky to get 2 wallets and your camera (small 35 mm) in there. At the larger resorts they are on the floor and can accomodate much larger items.
