Secret to Rolling Packing Method?

My boyfriend and I are sailing on the Jan 11 Wonder. We're hoping to have a minimum of ironing to do, especially the first night (I've heard it's hard to get an iron). He says he'll just pack an iron! Who packs an iron?! Anyway, I've heard the secret to wrinkle free packing is to roll everything. Do you roll everything individually? Stack it all together and roll it in one big roll? Do you put wax paper in between layers? This sounds silly but I'm being serious. I hate ironing.

We roll each piece of clothing seperate, it really does cut down on wrinkled clothes. We have never used wax paper in between layers.

Andy,

How come I'm not surprised we are both holy "rollers"?

I travelled to Europe last year for three weeks in one small carryon-size suitcase-on-wheels with everything rolled.

I actually roll some "outfits" together: a shirt, shorts, underwear (if necessary). Now that I've outgrown "garanimals", it really helps!

My grandmother got us into holy "rolling" years and years ago. It was hard convincing my DW that it really worked. One time when we went on vacation I rolled my clothes in my suitcase, and DW folded her clothes in her suitcase. Guess who rolls her clothes now??? LOL!!!

They take up a whole lot less room rolled don't they? It is quite amazing.

Thanks again for the great info guys. I had heard about rolling from The Guidos from the first season of The Amazing Race. It's how they managed to have so many clothes and look so "together" through the whole race.

I have never heard of putting wax paper to help with wrinkles, but tissue paper helps with wrinkles. Now you have a reason to keep the tissue after unwrapping the gifts this holiday season.

Andy & Jim, does the rolling really save that much room? We usually use the space saver bags and tend to overpack our bags.

Oh tissue paper, not wax paper! You'd think I was making baklava or something. Hee!:p

Don't put the wax paper on the baklava then roll your clothes in it - you would have a big sticky icky mess:eek:

I used zip lock bags to pack us. It not only saved in packing but made it so much easier to unpack in the room. I didn't have to worry about keeping the clothes neat in the limited space. We had a cat 8 & I have heard that the 11 we booked has much less storage room. I just had the kids pull out a bag in the morning & they didn't mess up the drawers. I was really able to pack the steamer trunk that way. :)

Now how exactly am I to do this? Do I roll things first put them in the bag and roll again? DH thinks this is crazy but if it saves space and wrinkles I am up for it.

Hey Ann~
my thoughts exactly... I figured I had to roll first and then put the clothes into the ziplock bags?

I have to get the 2.5 gallon ziplocks when we go to BJ's later today. I already have the gallon bags ready for other items.. but I figured it's a bit early to do the holy roller right now.. t-shirts and shorts are ready to go into my luggage.. I'm not anxious, I'm not anxious, I'm not anxious.

We just used the zip lock bags for our undies and socks, which was good, because our suitcases were gone through at the airport security checkpoint. The rest of our clothes were rolled and put into our suitcases.

We were also able to use the zip lock bags to bring home damp swimsuits and towels, as well as the dirty undies and socks.

We went on our first cruise in May. I had been reading the boards and came across the thread on rolling and using ziplock bags for packing. I tried it and it was great! I rolled and packed complete outfits together and it made getting the kids ready a much quicker process.

Our bag was also inspected after we checked it at the airport. (They leave you a little postcard note inside stating that it was inspected). I was very glad that all of the contents were rolled and ziplocked. I can only imagine what the contents might have looked if packed the traditional way!

So do you roll first? Then put in the ziplock? Then do you roll the ziplock too or just lay it flat?

I rolled the clothes and then put them in the bags. I squeezed out all of the air to make them smaller. The ziplock bags then layed flat in the suitcase.

There was quite a long thread on the fine art of rolling/ziplocking on the Dis Boards. (It wasn't the cruise board).

The other nice thing is that when your clothes are dirty, you can ziplock those too, keeping them out of the way and keeping things more organized.

Personally, I don't roll. I folded carefully then put the outfits in seperate ziplock bags. I sit on them to get the air out & zip. I do that when I sell the kid's clothes on Ebay since I get more items in the envies that way. I was able to stack the bags any way they fit & not mess anything up.
