A lot of Democrats like myself have been scratching their heads the past few weeks over the treatment John McCain has been getting. Here's a guy with a long and very conservative voting history in the Senate. But right-wing radio hosts have taken the handful of times he hasn't voted the "right" way and parlayed that into his being a liberal indistinguishable from Hillary Clinton. Huh? Meanwhile, voters in Republican Primary are defying their overlords and voting for the guy anyway. What the heck is going on?

Well, I've figured it out. You guys all held a secret meeting (not sure where you found a room big enough) and hatched a plot. A vast-right-wing-conspiracy if you will. You needed to find a way to get a right-winger in the White House, but had a problem in that American voters are largely turned off by what Republicans have done the past 8 years and are in no mood to fill the White House with somebody who wants to continue George Bush's policies.

So you came up with a great plan. You'll nominate McCain - a solid conservative 99% of the time - but have Rush/Sean/Ann/etc. selling the notion that he's really a liberal Democrat. Since everyone is in on the plot, Republicnas know they are only kidding and will vote for him anyway. But because McCain is now rebranded as a Liberal, he can actually win.

Brilliant!

PS - Don't take this thread too seriously folks.

My co-worker already leapt to this conclusion after Ann Coulter said she was voting for Hillary.

It wasn't hard to find a room big enough, there's only 7 of us conservatives left in the country.

I'm pretty conservative. People joke that Rush Limbaugh is too liberal for me (and based on some things I've heard, if they're true, he is.) I don't listen to the radio shows much. If I hear 10 minutes a year, it's a miracle.

I don't like any of the Republicans. If the radio guys are saying they aren't conservative enough, they're right. The Republicans are turning into democrats and the democrats are turning into communists.

There aren't many truly conservative people left.

On several very important issues McCain has been very wrong. Campaign finance reform, tax cuts, and last year's immigration bill. There are some things you never compromise on and for me it's free speech and protecting the border. There are plenty of stories out there where ranchers in the southwest are finding prayer rugs and copies of the Koran on their properties. I'm not for rounding up the illegal aliens and shipping them home. But many or our employment problems would go away if they people from Mexico won't competing for jobs. Some say that Americans won't work for those wages which may be true. But then the wages would have to go up to attract workers. That alone would probably raise hourly wages enough to make the minimum wage irrelevant.
Getting down off soap box.

I am very conservative, but I am for the guest worker program. And so are most of your US Congressmen and Senators.

Somehow, when people speak about the guest worker program, they think it's something Bush has come up with. That's not true. The government has been issuing H2A and H2B visas for decades.

People also seem to think that democrats are against this, and republicans are for this. That's also a bit of misinformation.

Three years ago, when that bill was put up for renewal, it passed the US Senate 96-4.

:lmao:

So count heads and see who doesn't come on this thread, because all 7 of you must be on the DIS?

I thought I had the room swept for listening devices....................:sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

I don't know how you did it, but bravo. I kinda figured the requirement to hug the statue of Richard Milhous Nixon before entering the room would ensure only true believers gained entrance into the inner sanctum.......;) :lmao:

Back in the real world, many conservatives (of which I am one) are wary of John McCain. I agree that he has real bona-fides as a conservative if you view his entire political career. But (and it is a big but), he is a big giant "pander bear" when it comes to running for the top office in this country. Perhaps, this is because he seems to have made the same calculation as the Clintons (and admittedly, GWB) that you have to appeal to the center to get elected.

This strategy, which may or may not work, goes against most, if not all of our conservative principles. Enough for the base to stay home? I don't think so.

Here is a website that lays out fairly well what I am talking about (although it does go a bit deeper into religious issues).

http://www.al-ra.org/declaration_of_conservative_prin.htm

My list of conservative principles is shorter:

Lower taxes
Smaller govt
Strong defense

JMO and regards,

Lower taxes
Smaller govt
Strong defense

And, punch a hippie!

I said it before, and I'll say it again...if McCain is the Republican nominee, he can beat Hillary (though I don't think he will), and he'd lose to Barack (who doesn't inspire the irrational hatred Hillary seems to).

The right wing pundits may well come to regret their blasting of McCain, as their comments may result in keeping the Republican base - and make no mistake, it's the religious right I'm talking about...as they are the only ones that matter in that party, since they've made it impossible to get elected as a Republican without them - at home on election day. Yeah, yeah...they're just trying to boost Romney (although, he's got a more liberal record than McCain on most issues...go figure), but it's going to backfire on them if Hillary isn't the Democratic nominee.
