Secret Green Club - whatever number thread

I was always good at math, really loved Algebra, too. But what they teach now doesn't even resemble the math I learned. I can get them to the right answers, but not the method the school is teaching. There have been a couple times when we have tried to teach exactly the school's method, and it doesn't click, so eventually I go back to old long math methods, and THEN they get it.

Hi Peeps! Sorry I got lost! It's been  around here

Happy Belated B-day, TOT!!

I am going through Math frustrations too. It was always my worst subject...I managed to get through college, but not sure how I will get the kids through HS. Chris is multiplying and dividing compund fractions, and While I have no problems doing it, the way I learned it is nothing like they are learning it now. I was trying to help him the other night, and finally had to tell him to just google it. He did, and found a way that worked for him.:thumbsup2 I just can't wait for Algebra:scared1: next year.:rolleyes1

Heather, I am with you there. We had to google when they did "stem/leaf" math a couple years ago, since we had NO idea what they were talking about. Meagan seems to get math concepts fairly easy, that's a good thing. Catie is so good at all her school work, math is the one place she struggles, and we are sometimes less able to explain than we would like.

Danielle-- bless u with those babies teaching them! I used to work in a daycare that had a kindergarten. I remember the teacher would not have them do any writing at all other than drawing. She said they will have to write everyday for the rest of their school careers I want them to enjoy learning. Not sure if she's still teaching.

I feel everyone's pain with teaching the kids. B was the worst, but luckily he was able to turn everything around. I'm no help in the math department even though I used to be ok with it. When I was in school 1 and not 2 was a prime number! Of course Pluto was a planet then too. :rotfl:

Alrighty we are at the 36 day mark PEEPs. T for the love of God please remind me to bring the Old Bay with me. I keep forgetting to mail it. You know you have to remind me of those things or do you prefer I just mail it? Of course at this point you might just have to come get it. :rotfl2: It would help if the fam would stop moving the box. Grrrr

Mary, thanks for mentioning that, it reminds me that I need to pack T's Christmas Mickey popcorn bucket, which I keep forgetting to mail, might as well pack and bring it along. I am SO EXCITED! I can't believe how close we are getting!

I think Alyssa is going to kill me...... we are branching out with the bracelets.....for a $2 upcharge..... we will be doing sports teams logos...... She already has 9 orders for Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers....oh...plus one St. Louis Rams???? LOL

I haven't told her yet......

oh... Kristi....we are dipping beads this weekend...your mickeys should be in the mail next week...sorry we took forever.

Kristi don't bring the popcorn bucket. I will NOT have room for it. We are only doing duffle bags.. Sorry..

Mary I will have room for the old bay though. :rotfl: Although maybe that would be a good excuse to come visit you :teeth: B needs to move out so I would have a place to stay :rotfl::rotfl:

My kids passed me up in math awhile ago. I don't even know what a graphing calculator does; I can only tell you they are expensive and people steal them.
I lucked out, because DH was an engineering major before he switched over to poli sci. I just handed off all the tough math questions to him. Now, when it comes to proofreading papers, that's another story. I still proof DH's speeches before he makes them.

Oh, and Bradi, I did like that picture.

And everytime one of us logs on to post or read, it adds a view. So may be some stalkers, but may be us just looking for some new things to comment on!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I prefer to think that we have stalkers..... instead it just means we are bored and looking to see if anyone else is online....

I have way too many things I SHOULD BE doing instead I am here looking for others...:dance3:

So we got back Meagan's standardized testing results, and her composite says she is at 5th grade 6th month level, pretty strange since her 7th grade grades show her on the bronze honor roll, I think.

That's the thing about standardized testing. It's a snapshot of one week, so kids may not be doing their best work that week. Also, some students are great at learning and doing regular school work, but don't have great test-taking skills. And don't even get me started on poorly written questions that do not assess what they purport to assess! (Can you tell I have some strong opinions on this?:headache:)

I have to agree....

My DD 17 has all A's and 1 B and on her latest standardized test she showed a 6th grade MATH level of understanding... So how is she making an A in the 12th grade....

I can tell you that if you give her a fact, anything, it is stuck in her brain forever and she can recall it. Who wrote this, who sang that, who painted this, 2+2 = 4.... all of that we are good with.....

Ask her to rationalize something... if this and this then this, she it totally lost.....

Throw in extra words to a problem that have no effect on the out come, like 2+2 = 4, and the sun is bright, and 2+2+2=6, so what is 2+2+2+2? She will be totally lost, and trying to figure how the sun will effect the addition.....

Math is not her thing.... She is an artist, and musician, and that is perfect for me, hope she can find something she loves to do and can support herself and I will be happy....

Wow and I thought I had it bad. Brandi I did this from the age of 8 to the age of 17 and now i'm at it again. :rotfl: I was told since it came back for me I may have it the rest of my life. :confused3

:worship:

:teeth:

I will be calling you next year when we move up in algebra. This year was a rough one for us.. I can't do algebra to save me. After hours and hours of me having to learn it all over again it finally clicked again for me and I could help Anthony but man let me tell you I am passing the buck for next year... So glad we are friends :teeth: I HATE MATH (Oh and i'm sure LizzY will be glad you know math. I think I :scared1: her I was so hopeless :rotfl: )

Have a good day everyone!! :teeth:

I so wish you lived closer....I would be begging you to tutor my DD, Alyssa....she's always been good at math...but with the 'restructuring' going on at the school....she's had substitutes...and now has a teacher that she has issues with. And I cannot remember ever learning about polonomials....or whatever they are called.

I used to know algebra..... I used to actually be good at it too. :headache:

Sigh..... well, at least we figured if she fails this last marking period.... she did well enough the rest of the year that she will still end up with a high C or low B

Happy Thursday...I think I'll be dipping some beads today. :)

Happy belated birthday ToT!!!!! :)

i do very little MATH these days.... We have programs that do all of that for us and so I just plug in the numbers and get my answer.... If I had to go back do any of that again I would be the one crying I am sure....

:dance3::dance3::dance3::dance3::dance3:

I must confess that my DH is an Electrical Engineer and if it is really difficult problem with the kids studies, I pawn them off on him.... He has more patience than I do.. :sad2:

36 days very cool, if you forget the old bay, just remind me I am a couple of days behind and I can pick some up!

Okay, T, I swear I will get it boxed up and mailed then...one of these days...

Brandi and Danielle, I agree with your assessment on standardized testing, the problem we hit is that the school wants to use the tests as proof of advancement/holding back, which is crazy to me. 2 years ago they mentioned that based on the test scores they felt we should hold her back, I asked about how that played with her mostly B grades in all subjects and they said well, based on that she would be fine to advance. Also, they are supposed to have accommodations in effect including no timing of the tests and all questions other than vocabulary/reading comprehension. The school did not follow her 504 plan on the testing, so really, the results should not be used, right? It just annoys me, cause we go over and over with them regarding her 504 plan and then they break the rules.

I have way too many things I SHOULD BE doing instead I am here looking for others...:dance3:

Text me I always provide good entertainment! :teeth:

Kristi as long as I get it before Christmas i'll be good :rotfl: You have plenty of time!

That's good, cause obviously I am not very efficient about it! After all we are 4 months past my trip now... but I actually need to box it up and get it out of the house, that way Meag will stop trying to take it in her room. Cause God knows when we would see it again if she gets it in there, pretty sure she has things in there that she doesn't even remember having...

Thanks Brandi. T doesn't need the Old Bay for Disney, she wants it for home, I just keep forgetting to send it to her. Hopefully she hasn't run out yet.

Finally another weekend. Last week was so bad. BAd Friday at work, worse after words cause Bill's car quit on me. Jeff was in basketball clothes, the temps had dropped about 20 degrees and it was sprinkling. 15 phone calls later, I found a ride. Got the car towed Sat., then found out that the 99 Buick with 92,320 odd miles needed a new engine. WHAT!!! :headache:

Still making decisions on that. Any suggestions besides the $2200 - 3200 for a new engine? <sigh> That's just the guessetimate. It could be worse cause it is such a big engine.

At least the lawn was mowed when I got home that day I posted about it. Deck is down, quote for siding is gotten (looks like another paint & scrape weekend coming up to make the city happy). Thankfully it only the front I have to do!

Healthy Kids day is tomorrow at most of the YMCA's. fun free stuff for the kids. For us, it is open pool time, along with all the rest. Go check it out if one is close. You can look online to see if yours has it! Then I am sure I hear a nap calling!!

So much more going on, that I could make it a novel to read! But wanting to wish all a good weekend!

Hang in there, Kathy. I feel for you. I don't have any advice on the engine, except to say, over 92,000 miles is a lot of miles. If the rest of the car seems like it's holding up well, fine. Otherwise, you may have to think about parking it near a busy corner and praying that someone with good insurance nails it (JK).

Yes, the school could be in big trouble for not following the plan, and I'd say the results should not be used. Frustrating!
