This was taken from our monthly BCBS newsletter.

Breathing secondhand smoke can increase the risk of lung and heart disease. There are over 40 know cancer-causing chemicals packaged in secondhand smoke. Among them:

ACETONE-the solvent found in nail polish remover.
AMMONIA-a floor and toilet cleaner.
ARSENIC- a potent poison.
BENZENE-and industrial solvent associated with leukemia.
CADMIUM-found in battery acid.
CARBON MONOXIDE-and odorless, invisible poison gas.
DDT-an insecticide.
FORMALDEHYDE-a preservative for dead bodies, wood, and fabrics.

With all these known chemicals, why do people keep on smoking? What about the people that don't care and "contaminate" the non-smokers???

When I was little I used to tell my dad who smoked, that if I got cancer I was going to sue him when I got older. That was back when there wasn't even the term second-hand smoke. As a 7 yr old I was ahead of my time.

I hate seeing kids & esp. babies who are in cars with the windows rolled up & the parents are smoking. How can people do that:confused:

Not to turn this into a debate thread, but my mom passed away from a lung disease that had no known cause. She did not fit the profile of patients that had been exposed to known agents.
HOWEVER, she lived around 2nd hand smoke all of her life; she also went to bingo very frequently and would come home wreaking of smoke:crazy2:. I remember asking her how she could stand breathing all that junk. :( I really believe that is how she came down with her fatal illness. I never allow myself to be around 2nd hand smoke.

All my in-laws smoke, and I mean ALL. They truly don't believe any of it. Not about what it does to them and certainly not this myth of second hand smoke! Believe me they come up with some real whoppers, well at least my mother in law does. Like, did you know when you quit smoking your body goes into shock, so it's better to keep smoking while pregnant, because you would put the baby into shock too. Or, her brother had a heart attack 5 years after quitting smoking and it's the quitting that caused it! Yup, I have to choke on smoke around them. They smoke 3-4 packs a day. I don't know how dh got out of that house a nonsmoker, but I'm so glad he did! Both sisters and his brother smoke as well as all aunts and uncles (except the one who quit causing his heart attack) and his grandparents. Very sad.

as a former smoker, my response would be because it is the hardest addiction i have ever had to break. i have not smoked in several years now and sometimes i still crave cigarettes. it's not an easy thing just to quit, even if you know it is bad for you.

ACETONE-the solvent found in nail polish remover. Better stop polishing your nails.
AMMONIA-a floor and toilet cleaner. No more cleaning your toilets or floors
DDT-an insecticide. No more using these either, prepare to be eaten by bugs.
FORMALDEHYDE-a preservative for dead bodies, wood, and fabrics. Must also go naked now and sit on concrete floors.

My mom died of gallbladder cancer, however she smoked for probably 40 of her 66 years. I don't have concrete proof, but I know the smoking was probably a huge factor in her getting this rare form of cancer.

The one thing I can say is that she never smoked in the car with us kids and rarely smoked in the same room with us. A year before she died, she was babysitting our son and smoked somewhere in our house and my Husband hit the roof when he smelled smoke in our house.

It's a terrible addiction and I feel sorry for anyone who wants to quit but can't.

I'm willing to bet that you are a smoker? Try watching a loved one die from a lung disease caused by smoking. Not pretty. I have no problem with smokers....as long as they don't crap up my airspace.

That is all I will respond to on this because I want to stand by my tag.::yes::

I'll second that... I am also an ex-smoker and I still crave it sometime...even tho I am hyper sensitive to smoke now. Quiting is one of the hardest things i ever did.
