I was so excited when my mom said she wanted to cruise with us this time. She will be 79 two months after our trip and has always been so excited and interested in hearing about our earlier cruises. She never went because of my dad's on going illnesses, but he passed away and she said she would love to cruise too. I knew I'd have to use her folding wheelchair for the long hikes around the ship, but I just looked at the menu for the 4 nite on Barb's site and realize she will have to either choose almost all dinners off the kids menu or have steak or grilled chicken each night. She can't eat salads, under cooked veggies, etc. Can you get a baked potato with the chicken or steak that is offered nightly? She loves baked potatoes. Does the buffet restaurant have something at dinner each night on 4 nite cruise? Mom is so young at heart - I know she'll love the shows, bingo, etc. and will enjoy putting her feet up in a shady spot with a good book. Just don't want her to be the 1st person on record to go to bed hungry at night on the cruise! LOL! Anyone who has cruised with a senior relative have any advice?

My DM70 has cruised with us twice on Disney. The first time she tried all the restaurants onboard and didn't like the selection of food. She would find something to eat but was not very happy about it. My DM is an end stage renal patient and likes very basic foods, nothing fancy or with sauces.

The second time she cruised with us she told us from the time the deposit was sent in she would not be eating in the restaurants for dinner. She said she was going to the fast food places onboard, and thats exactly what she did! She had the hamburger, hot dog, and chicken breast and ordered room service.

My DM had a great time on /off the ship and is planning to cruise with us again.

The only advice I have is, I'm sure she will find something/somewhere on the ship that she would like to eat for each meal. It seemed my DM was very happy with the breakfast/lunch selections it was only dinner that was the problem. The crew members try to do there best to make everyone happy and they wouldn't have a problem letting your DM order off the childrens menu.

If I remember correctly they did have baked potato available at the resturants.

They do not have a dinner buffet on the 4 day Wonder Cruise. Wish they did though!

I took my 80 year-old mother on her first cruise earlier this month for her birthday - a 4-night Wonder. She LOVED it and wants to go again! She does not need a wheelchair or walker, but does walk SLOWLY so we just had to take our time. She has Type II diabetes (does not require insulin) and just has to watch what she eats. We always ate in the restaurants and she had no problem. She was just careful about her selections and did not "stuff" herself. She enjoyed the sugar-free desserts. She liked the chicken tenders (without fries) at Pluto's as an afternoon snack (we had late dining). The servers are very good at suggestions for special dietary requirements. If your mother can only eat certain things, there is no need for her to miss the dining rotation experience. Just call DCL at least two weeks prior (sooner if possible) and advise them of her needs. I'm sure they will accommodate.

My Mom is 73 and went with me this past October on the 9/28 Magic-al Mystery Cruise - 7 days, two at Castaway Cay, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. She absolutely LOVED it. We have two more cruises booked for May '02 and October '02.
There was a lot for her to do and see, even without me and my son (7) tagging along!!!!!

Enjoy!

Sandee,

When you book the cruise, have your TA call Disney and tell them what type of diet your mother needs. Then when you board the ship, see the MaitreD and make sure he knows about it. He will see to it that your mother gets what she wants or needs. He will most likely give your mother the dinner menu, the night before. She will be able to order things prepared the way she wants them.

My Father is the KING of no sauce, no spice, no seasoning. He would pick anything from the menu and tell them how he wanted it and they do it. Also, if one meal has a veggie you want they will bring you both and you pick what you want off each dish. Remember, you can order as many of any category as you would like. There were several nights where I ordered more than one main couse just to sample the variety. Take your Mom and enjoy!!

Take your mom and have fun. Explain to the server that she likes "simple foods". Plenty to eat on the cruise even for picky eaters. So sorry for your loss of your father. Take her and enjoy life! We lost my father-in-law 4 years ago and MIL is living with us now.
