We are getting ready for our second trip to WDW. Our kids are 8 and 10 and the first time we stayed at POP because it looked like "fun" - we enjoyed it but wanted something different this time.

We have selected a moderate this time because we are taking my MIL which makes us a group pf 5. We have picked Port Orleans Riverside which looks great and has a trundle bed.

My worry is that I and my kids like the fun disney theming and with Pop it was a fun theming. I am nto sure if POR really has disney theming and if not will the kids think it is a boring place? Should we be picking another resort or will be happy with our decision?

I really don't want to go above a moderate because we really are not in our rooms or on the resort property that much.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

THanks,
Helen

I recently had a similar situation. We've stayed at Pop and CBR. We are planning a trip for next year and was hoping to stay in one of the moderate categories. Things is I just wasn't thrilled with any of the moderate hotels.
I do love the theming of the Values, with kids it so exciting to see there face light up, seeing the icons. We threw caution to the wind and will be booking at Swan and Dolphin. Although you can not take Magical Express with this hotel.

Maybe an idea....... to have the best of both worlds (theming and room for 5). All Star Music has new family suites that have rencently opened. I think they run about moderate prices. Check the boards - I've seen floor plans and pictures. Looks pretty neat!

Hope that help a bit. POR looks nice heard the busses are shared with POFQ.
:confused3

If you can stand the tight squeeze, the POR is the place for you. Another great option are the FW cabins. The boys can sleep in bunk beds and Grandma can sleep in the living room for a bit of privacy, with AAA's 25% discount its really not that much more than a moderate, but you get alot more space.

FW is great for boys!! That's the only place my boys wanted to stay when they were growing up. They loved the motor launch to the Magic Kingdom. Another favorite was the outdoor movie each night. Chip and Dale show up and it's awesome because not that many people know about it. For 5.00 each, you get everything to make your own s'mores and that is the only cost. If you bring your own s'mores stuff, then it's free. If I ever have grandsons, this is where I'll bring them.
I loved it because it's roomy.Over 500 sq ft. There's a master bedroom with bunks and a Murphy bed in the living room that's very comfortable. Plus there's a kitchenette which is great for either meals or snacks. The Trail's End Buffeteria has great food and is considered one of the few "bargain" places to eat in all of WDW.
Try for the AAA discount. I promise you won't be sorry.

Thanks - I will take a look at the cabins and the pricing.

Would you say getting around to the various parks is easier from POR or Fort Wilderness?

Are slides at the pool important to your kids? If so, stay with a moderate rather than value as the values do not have slides. My daughter is 6. This year, we visited 2X and stayed first at CSR and 2nd trip at Pop & WL. You know what? The value with the big, fun icons was not her favorite. While she did like it, she preferred both CSR and WL.

Someone mentioned Ft. Wilderness, and I think that might be an interesting option for you. I have never stayed there, but know 2 families that have. They had good things to say about Ft. Wilderness. Not sure about the transportation.

You can take the motor launch to the MK and hop the monorail to Epcot.
For the other parks, there are busses. We alwaysrent a car because we like to go the parks when we're ready but more important,to us,is being able to leave the parks when we're ready. Nothing like waiting for a bus when you're dead on your feet.

Do you have to pay for parking at the resorts or at the parks if you do rent a car? We were planning to rent a car for the first day so we could get from the airport and get some groceries and then return when we went to a park in the evening. But maybe a rental for the week is a better option? We live in a smallish town so my kids don't get to go on "transit" or a school bus. I think they actually (with the exception of the late nights) enjoyed the bus and monorail rides.

There's no charge @ the parks if you're an onsite guest-just leave the parking thingee on your dash. FW does not charge for parking-except an RV :lmao:

The cabins at FW sleep 6.
Here is the layout:

Family suites at All Star Music -520 SF

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Dh and I stayed at new Family Suites at All Star Music September 21,2006.

We stayed in 0416 which is on the ground floor. Room 0418 which was next door was not a Suites so the Suites are not all grouped together.
The living area was the best. There was a small table with 2 blue modern looking chairs by the window area.

The chairs had a small amount of cushioning and curved backs and seemed more conformable (to me) than the old straight back chairs they had in the old All Star Music rooms. The table top was wood grain and there were silhouettes of Mickey all abound the edge in a darker wood color.

9-26-2006-02.jpg

The living room area is very roomy when the furniture is the closed position.

When you first enter the room you get a feeling that you can take time to relax and spread out in these rooms. The cramped feeling is not there. there is a sofa, chair and ottoman which fold out into beds. There are two small end tables and soft foot stool for the sofa.

06.jpg

The TV was a 27 inch flat screen and the cabinet had three drawers under the TV area. There were two shelves next to the TV and a cabinet door which opened to reveal 2 more shelves.

9-26-2006-36.jpg

I opened up the chair bed and it was very comfortable to lay down on. The back of the chair actually rests on the floor supporting the chair bed when it is folded out into the bed. It was pretty amazing the way they designed the pull out furniture!
The frame of the bed is metal so when I went to get of the chair bed I did feel the metal bars at the edge of the bed.

9-26-2006-12.jpg

9-26-2006-14.jpg

I tried to get the ottoman into the master bedroom area but I am sorry to say the ottoman is just too wide and will not fit through the door jam.

The sink and closet areas in the suites also have privacy curtains.
The sink areas have 2 shelf cubbies under them for storage and a Kleenex tissue area under them. There are wall mounted hair dryers with the built in amber night lights on the walls by the sinks.

9-26-2006-33.jpg

9-26-2006-31.jpg

Each dressing area has a privacy curtain, closet area, iron, ironing board and wall safe. The wall safes are the standard size which will hold a wallet a cell phone a small DVD player, a personal CD player, or a few CDs but it is not large enough for a lap top or anything that is more than a couple of inches wide.

9-26-2006-32.jpg

Remember the Suites have 2 bathrooms, 2 dressing areas with privacy curtains, 2 safes, 2 hairdryers, 2 closets, 2 TVs, 2 separate sleeping, areas and 2 TVs.

Here is the layout of the Suite:

ASMusic_FamSuite_layout.jpg

The kitchenette has a lot storage area also.
There was an ice bucket with 6 plastic cups on the countor and a coffeepot with 6 of the throw away foam hot cups.
There were 6 paper plates, 6 paper bowls, Paper towels and a silverware tray on an upper shelf.
The silverware container had 6 sets of plastic ware and a can opener in it.

13.jpg

The kitchenette has a nice size microwave, and the fridge is the larger under the counter dorm fridge. The fridge has small freezer on the top which was big enough to freeze my 3 small ice pacs for my meds. The area for the freezer is not very high. You might be able to put a couple of small water bottles in it to freeze them but a larger water bottle would not be able to fit in the freezer area.

9-24-2006-03.jpg

The Master room was nice size and it was nice to have a desk area with a mirror over it so it also sure as a make up area if one chose to it as such.
The TV cabinet had 3 nice size storage drawers. The easy chair next to the bed was nice addition. I enjoyed being able to sit there instead of using a table chair or bed to sit.

The queen size bed was conformable. The AC at newly refurbished has been updated to Cental air style instead of the old under the window style. It worked fine while we were there. Our room was very quiet.

18.jpg

15.jpg

The Master area had enough room for a twin size aero bed if you placed the bed with one end by the window and had it running between the desk and the foot of bed. (You would need to move the desk chair out of the way. )The aero bed would block the access of the Queen size bed from the far side, however. The bed was a Queen.

There were only a few things in our Suite that were different from those pictured on the DIS resorts homepage.

1) The headboard was smaller than the one pictured here taken from the DIS resorts homepage.

2) The tile on the kitchen floor and bathroom floor was tan and navy blue instead of the tan and white in the pictured room.

3) Ironing boards and iron were in each closet area.

Mousekeeping was great.

Mousekeeping left plenty of towels and we were pleasantly surprised by a pair of love bird towel animals when we returned to our room on evening midway through our stay!

The Calypso pool was never crowded even though the Fantasia pool at Movies was closed during the time we stayed Music.

We never waited more than 5-10 minutes for bus and only shared buses on the way back from some of the parks. Music always had its own bus back from MK.

Any questions? Just ask and I will try to answer them.

Why not try the ASMusic Family Suites? You'll have Disney theming, two bathrooms, two TVs, a kitchenette and sleeping space for 6. The price per night is close to one room at the moderates and there is no extra fee for the third adult. Also, all of the Family Suites are pretty close to the main pool and food court/shop area.

We stayed in two adjoining rooms at ASMusic (before there were Family Suites) and really loved it.

ETA: I should have known Linda would beat me to it!! :goodvibes

DH and I enjoy the landscaping and peacefulness of All Star Music.
We enjoy relaxing by the pool (there are plenty of chairs and lounges), and the beautiful lighting at the resort by night.

I love The All Star Resorts.

I am 56 years old and travel several times a year. I often stay at 4 star hotels.
So the deluxe and mod resorts are just another hotel/motel to me.
All Star is like being in the heart of the Magic and that is where I want to be.

All Star Music is my favorite. It is quieter because more couples stay there. I love staying at the Calypso building. It is closer to the pool, food court and bus stop.

Here is a site with a map of All Star Sports and All Star Music.
http://www.wdwinfo.com/resortmaps/allstarmap.htm
Scroll down. All Star Music is at the bottom of the page.
The Calypso buildings at All Star Music are #1 and #10 are nearest to the food court and bus stop.

The Calypso pool at ASMu has Donald Duck.

The buses are wonderful.

Bus rides are quite short from the ALL Stars according to PassPorter.com

All Star Buses-CBR buses---POPbuses--PO buses--- Contemporary
MK 20 min---- 20 min-----25 min------10 min---20 min(mono)
Epcot 10 min-- 15 min-----20 min------10 min---15 min
MGM 10 min----12 min-----15 min------15 min---20min
AK 10 min------20min-------15 min----15 min---20 min
DTD 15 min----20 min------20 min-----15 min---35 min

It only takes 10 minutes to get to Epcot, MGM and AK from All Stars.
MK is 20 min away. That's the same amount of time it takes on the monorail from the Contemporary.

A WORD ABOUT BUS SHARING

To me Bus Sharing at the All Stars is really a non issue.

In the mornings during Park opening hours each All Star usually has a dedicated bus.
During mid day it is usually just our stop and maybe one more on the way to the parks. On the way back sometimes it is all 3 but often Sports and Music share and Movies has it's own bus back. Each of the All Stars usually has it's own dedicated bus back from the MK.
That is a big plus. It seems like the Music bus stop usually has the shortest of the three All Star bus lines.

I guess some people who stay at POP see all 3 All Star names on the return sign of our bus stop when they head to the POP bus stop and think All Stars also has 3 stops on the way to the park.
(Even when we stop at another AS resort to load up it has not taken more than 5 minutes and we are on our way!)

The pools at The All Stars are very kid friendly.

When staying at the All Stars you can use any of the All Star pools. That means 3 main pools ,3 quiet pools and 3 kiddie pools to chose from.

The All Star Movie Fantasia pool has Mickey.

The Calypso pool at ASMU has Donald Duck.

And the Surfs up pool at All Star Sports has giant surf boards.

Here are a few pool photos.

All Star Movies Mickey Pool.

I have visited WDW more than a dozen times with the 1st time in Oct. 1971. It was brand new. I've stayed at FW, Disney Inn, a few the of Hotels on hotel Blvd., CBR and the towers at the Contemporary. I got to see the MK from my balcony at the Contemporary and I'm happy I got to experience it once. I just prefer the All Star Resorts.
The theming is pure Disney.
My last 6 visits have been at The All Stars and last fall when we took dd,dsil, and our grandson age 3 for 8 nights we stayed at the All Stars Music. I thought about AKL and even though we can well afford AKL I just wanted Alex to experience the Disney Magic :wizard: at the All Stars on his first visit.
Where else can one find Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse at the pool?

Have a great time at Disney wherever you choose to stay!

If you want theming I don't think you'd be happy at Ft Wilderness. I really enjoyed my stay there because the cabins were big and nice and quiet. A great escape from the parks but they are not themed like the value resorts. I also liked that you park your car right at the cabin but now that Disney has ME I don't rent a car. Getting to MK requires an internal bus to the boat launch.

I really enjoyed POR/FQ resort but you might be happier at the ASMo suites or 2 rooms at any value.

POR is very tight quarters with 5. Even if you spend little time int he room, just getting 5 people ready each day might be rough.

The family suites or even 2 connecting resorts at a value resort may give your family a little more breathing space as well as a second bathroom (priceless in the mornings!!)

POR is beautiful. The pool is great. It's not fun-theming like POP. The busses
at FW are CRAZY. I've been stranded more than once at that place. I'm sure
it's fine once you've figured it out. Just give yourself plenty of time. :thumbsup2

Like you said you are not in your rooms or the resort much so I wouldn't worry too much over this. I think the advice to get one of the Allstar suites would be a good idea though. I think w/ the MIL the extra space will make it more enjoyable for her.

We stayed at POR in May. The resort is nice and I would stay there again. However, the rooms are small and the trundle is not full size. If your boys are average size it may be too small. It would be a very tight squeeze. I know you don't spend much time in the room, but I would look at other options!! The new suites look great! I think our beds were full size...I just don't think you'll be comfortable. Have a great time, whatever you decide!!!

From a transportation point of view:

We just got back from a week at POR. Buses were shared with French Quarter at quieter times, but not when very busy. Still, it didn't take more than 15 minutes or so to get to any given park.

Buses at Fort Wilderness really aren't that complicated!! I wonder why everyone says that? :confused3 There are purple, yellow and orange "internal" buses there (they only loop through FW, from one end to the other). Purple goes straight up the main road, the other two go right and left to each perimeter road. All three start and end at the same place, but purple is the most direct. One look at the big map is all it takes to "get" it. From the main entrance/bus stop at FW, you then catch a park bus like you would at any other resort. A bit more time consuming, perhaps, but not complicated. Also, from FW you can catch the water launch to MK.

From ANY resort, having a car will get you there faster!!!!!
