So I had a thought...

Why is Happy Holidays the cause of the common wedgie (panties in a wad)....

but Seasons Greetings--which has been around ever since I can remember...doesn't cause a stir?


Was SG controversial when first introduced as well?

I don't know that either are controversial in and of themselves. I think the controversy comes when you are told that Merry Christmas cannot be used, and that you must replace it with a generic holiday sentiment. I don't see the big deal one way or the other.

I agree with AutieM03. For me, if I know specifically which celebration you prefer, I will give you good wishes for that celebration. Otherwise I will say "Merry Christmas" since that is my celebration and the event around which I wish people well. Seasons Greetings or Happy Holidays seem stilted affectations - kind of like "SO". Over used and it loses it's meaning. Will we someday be admonished not to refer to our wives as wives but us SO instead so as not to offend those in another arrangement?

I agree. People don't like to be told that they can't or shouldn't do something they want to do, be they 2 or 42!

I like happy holidays and seasons greetings because it includes all the holidays, even new year's!!!

If I just say Merry Christmas, I'm only hoping you have one good day instead of a few. And I just don't like cheating people like that.

I will say Merry Christmas to other Christians and I may inadvertently say it to non-Christians as well but I do try to use Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings because they are inclusive of all religious. After all, we Christians don't have a monopoly on December holidays.

It is a made up controversy in my book. These are businesses maing business decisons.

Who in the heck wants to receive a "Merry CHristmas? (or happy holidays or seasons greatings) from a person that is MADE to say it. Might as well just say "Merry CHristmas or my boss will fire me"

I generally say Merry Christmas unless I know the person I am addressing is celebrating something else. Best I can tell, even the pagans and atheists seem to be observing some version or variation of Christmas, so I figure that phrase is generic enough in itself.
