Seasickness medicine

I get seasick very easily. I was so worried about it ruining our cruise that I went to my doctor and got a prescription for the seasick patch (scopolamine patch) that you put behind your ear. It was TERRIBLE! I could not read the menus - took video a couple of times, thinking my phone was on pic because the screen was so blurry. But the worst side effects came when I stopped taking the medication. I was dizzy and felt so sick - no energy for weeks after I cruise. I am a high energy person and found myself taking a nap multiple times the first week we returned because I just could not function. I stopped running for about a month (I was training for a marathon that I was not able to compete in).

The good news - I think you will be surprised how much the stabilizers on the ship cut down on the motion. For what it is worth, I would use Bonine. I know some folks say they have no problem with the seasick patch medication. I wanted to add that I have never had any side effects from any other medication. The same dosage is give to someone weighing 100 pounds and someone twice that size.

Have a wonderful cruise!!

I used the patch on our honeymoon many years ago and my pupils dilated completely. I decided to try it out again before our cruise last year and experienced crazy dry mouth. So no patch for me. I too get more and more motion sick as I get older. Here's what I ended up doing for our 3 night on the Dream:

Me: 1 Bonine every 12 hrs starting 2 days BEFORE travel and ending two days AFTER travel
Kids: 2 Children's Dramamine every 8 hrs starting 2 days BEFORE travel and ending two days AFTER travel

I was not drowsy and only felt a little sick the first night out to sea (same for my daughter). I was especially worried bc we went to WDW directly after the cruise and I did not want to ruin that part of the trip. I have heard more stories about people getting sick after deboarding, so I was militant about taking it after the cruise. I did feel like the hotel was swaying (or any building) whenever I was in a small room (like a bathroom) for a good week and a half after the cruise. I did not feel drowsy. HTH! Have fun!

Three of the four of us are prone to motion sickness. My wife is an int'l traveler and uses a prescribed patch. Use these as directed and do not take off too soon. My daughter gets by fine with Sea-Bands. I take Dramamine at night before bed and self medicate with rum (it's a pirate's life for me) and ginger ale as needed.
