We will be taking the western Caribbean cruise. My two teenage daughters really want to swim with sea turtles. Has anyone done this? Can you tell me where? Thanks.
Teach them to love seeing wild animals in the wild. Take them snorkling & maybe they'll see a turtle, but avoid places that arrange the experience, as those animals are kept in captivity solely to entertain tourists.
or you teach your kids to enjoy animals in nature and in zoos. Animals are just that, animals. They are tasty and we should use them.... be humane, certainly, but no need to feel guilty about them in captivity.
Like the PP poster said, if you're going to Grand Cayman (I don't know your itinerary), there is a turtle farm there. The DCL excursion calls it "Boatswains" or something like that. You can get into the tanks with and hold baby sea turtles. You can't swim or interact with the adults.
I'll second @Chrisey above to go to the turtle farm on Grand Cayman. I wouldn't book a ship's excursion for it though. Just grab a cab when you get off the ship and have them take you there. Pay the admission (don't know how much that is now, but google should help), spend an hour or so there and then cab it back to the port.
We went to the Boatswain Turtle Farm in Grand Cayman on our last cruise. My kids (6, 8, and 10 at the time) loved it. They have a small tank where you can get in and pick up the turtles. They also have snorkel gear you can rent and a separate area where you can snorkel or just swim. You can also get lunch there. We spent 4 hours there. We will be doing this again on our next cruise. We are booking it on our own and taking the local bus there.
Depending on how adventurous you are - you can take the ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen and then get to Akumal, you can snorkel at a beautiful beach with sea turtles in the wild (not a farm or captive).
Another vote for turtle farm in Grand Cayman. If you do the package with snorkel gear/swimming there is a pool with fish and sea turtles. We were just there a couple of weeks ago and saw several sea turtles while snorkeling. We enjoyed it and booked on our own.
