SDMT First Thing at Opening?

I'm planning to visit MK on Monday November 10th. MK opens at 9am, no morning EMH. I'd like to ride the SDMT, but Touring Plans is estimating a 50 minute wait first thing at RD!
I have an AP, so I wasn't able to book a FP+ at 60 days out and now, of course, all the FP+ for SDMT are gone. I thought we would be able to just hit the ride first thing at RD with a minimal wait, but...50 minutes first thing? Really? Can anyone share their experiences with riding SDMT without a FP+ at RD? Did you really have to wait that long? If 50 minutes is truly the case....then this will have to wait for another trip!

We were there the 2nd week of June and rode at rd. We got to the park 45 minutes to an hour before park opening. We were walked down main street by a cm. At that time, for SDMT they were leading you around the castle to the right. We walked as a pack to the ride and were on and off in around 20 to 25 minutes. It isn't something I would try with someone that can't walk quickly or with a stroller. If I had a smaller child, I would carry them. My 8 year got his shoe stepped on and since I was holding his hand tightly, we took a couple of steps before I realized what had happened. A mom behind me picked it up and handed it to me. I just picked my DS up and kept moving. Once we got to the ride, I put his shoe back on. We did 3 rds at MK. 2 inside with a breakfast ADR and once outside the gate. All 3 times they opened the gates 10 to 15 minutes early.

We rode SDMT on Saturday, October 4 with no FP at RD. Our experience went something like this:

We arrived at MK at 8:00 a.m. - an hour before the posted 9:00 a.m. park opening. We were literally the first two people at the waiting area to enter the park, but many more followed soon after. We all sat around waiting for the RD activities to commence. Because the WDWRR is down, the "opening ceremony" was quite brief. And they did start walking us in by about 8:45.

To say it was a stampede might be a slight exaggeration. But it wasn't fun. Yes, they do walk everyone up main street as a group, but people are still jockeying for position. Strollers, arms, legs, feet, elbows, Ipads, cell phones - everything was a big jumbled mess. And you're packed in there like a can of sardines. The whole way to the ride I was saying that we should have found some other way to ride SDMT. But we tried to keep our senses of humor about it.

The group did peel off to the right before we hit the castle and went around that direction. DH and I kept up the pace of the group, but I refused to be an *** about it, as many others did. Even though we were first in line outside the park, by the time we got to the ride we weren't even close. Let's just say that this herd was made for line cutters. But that said, we did practically walk on the ride. By the time we got off the ride, though, the line was insane. Can't imagine how long that wait was. I would imagine that there were people who got to the MK at 8:30, thinking they were ahead of the pack, who ended up waiting at least 30 minutes. I guess in this case the early bird really does get the worm.

One other item of note: When our herd of cattle arrived at the ride, there was clearly another large group of people trying to get there from another direction - towards the carousel. Not sure if these were "breakfast" people who got held up at another waiting area or what, but they weren't pleased to arrive there just as the masses were already lining up.

Would I do it again? Probably not. Especially not with small children. No way. It's just not worth it. I would pick a "slower" time, like parade or fireworks, and just wait in line. (And that is saying something, as I NEVER wait in SB lines!) The queue is neat, and there were kids in our herd who wanted to play with some of the stuff along the way but the parents had to move them along so as not to hold up the line or lose their position. I also really missed the nice walk up Main Street, taking in the castle and the CM's waving, etc. In the herd, you have to watch your feet or you'll end up getting trampled.

It is absolutely doable if it is a high priority for you and your group. But you need to be there early and be ready to jockey for position in the herd. Be mentally prepared, too! If you can handle it, it's all good. :-)

Keep checking for FP+, too. I couldn't get one for our trip over Thanksgiving at the 60 mark. I kept checking every day and snagged one this past Saturday night. So, don't give up! I wouldn't say that I checked religiously, just when I thought about it.

Thank you for this very detailed observation report. Really helped me picture what it could be like, and as you say get myself "mentally prepared."

We have FP+ scheduled for 7DMTR later in the afternoon so we don't need to hurry in at RD with the crowds to get to 7D. Having said that, I do want to get into the park near RD and get a few other rides in while everyone is in Fantasyland. How long would you suggest we wait after RD to actually walk in MK and be able to "enjoy" the walk down Main street like the good old days? Does that RD crowd get in and down Main Street fairly quickly?

What a great post!! This was exactly our experience in June also. I would also add that we rode again at closing. Got in line 15 minutes before park closing. The posted wait time said 65 minutes but again, we were on and off in about 25 minutes. It was awesome at night!! I hope to always ride at night for now on!

Based on what I saw in August, I personally think that RDing 7DMT is one of the worst uses of the first hour in the park possible. It seems no matter what, there is going to be a wait. Oftentimes, the ride is down at RD, so you're queing up for nothing and waiting even longer. The longest posted wait time we saw (75 minutes) and the longest line of the day (wrapping all the way back to the Teacups) was right after RD. So not only are you waiting in line for a significant amount of time, you're also burning precious touring time. If you're going to be waiting in line anyway, you might as well wait later in the day when all lines are long.

If you're interested in an alternate strategy, the 7D line is much shorter at the end of the day. Early this summer, we were able to ride twice during the last half hour of operation without FP+. The posted wait time was 80 minutes, but the actual wait was 20 the first time and 10 for the 2nd trip.

This may be a more efficient use of time than showing up an hour before the park opens and hoping for the best.

We have FPs for 7DMT for both our MK days. We plan to head to Splash and Big Thunder and avoid the stampede.

The Herd does make it down Main Street pretty quickly. I mean, come on! They're practically beating down the doors to get there! Heaven forbid! Lol!

It's funny, in all the years we've been going to WDW, we are always at RD for at least one of our MK days. And until this trip, we have never joined The Herd. We like to wait "near" The Herd, where we can see and enjoy the Opening Ceremony. Then when the starting pistol goes off, we just let The Herd go in and follow along behind. It can still be a bit crowded, especially as you go under the train station. But it's nothing like The Herd. The Herd has a life of it's own!

Go ahead and be there, just let the maniacs go ahead of you. Then you can make your way down Main Street with the semi-maniacs. :-)

So happy that I was able to get 3 FP's for SDMT during our stay. Let the herd go for it if they want to I suppose. I'll be happy flying above London and Neverland and a few M&G's and other attractions while others slug it out.

I'm already stressing about 7DMT and we won't be there until next April. We are staying at SOG, so no chance of FP+ for us at the 30 day mark. We were planning on running with The Herd at rope drop, but after reading these very informative posts I think we would be better off waiting until the end of the day and ride on a night when we won't be watching Wishes. Walking down Main St. in the morning is something that I can't imagine missing out on, that said I guess The Herd will leave us dust.:rotfl:

Just think about how much more fun this would all be if there were no FP+ and the herd included everyone who wanted to ride immediately and everyone who wanted to get a FP before they ran out by 10 AM.

Then it would be more like the stampede to get to Gringotts where people literally run around barricades and through bushes (with not an employee in sight to stop them) to cut ahead in line.

Thank you for the information everyone.

I think 7DMT will probably have to wait for another visit. We usually go 3-5 times a year, so we don't feel the need to ride EVERYTHING every time we go for fear it will be our only chance for a long time.

Either go at rope drop or wait until night

If you walk quick, from rope drop you can be on the ride pretty quick. If you don't, then wait until night and it should be pretty painless. We just got back a couple days ago and magic kingdom was packed. Huge lines for every ride, it was quite annoying. So we waited in line around 9:30 for mine train on a night when the park closed at 1am regular and 3am for emh. Wait time said 70 min and the cast member at the entrance said it'll be 50-70. I didn't believe it at all since the line always moves fast. Timed it with my phone and we were on the ride in exactly 30 min. Just in time to be riding it during the wishes fireworks were going off.

A lot of people don't realize how quick the line moves. Mine train is one of the few rides I'll wait for if it has a high wait time just because I know more than likely it won't really be that long
