SD card formatting

I have a Pentax istD. I looked in the user manual. It doesn't say anything about how many GB the camera can handle (at least not that I've found). I just opened a new 2 - pack of 4GB SD cards and followed the directions in the manual for formatting the cards. Both of them flash the message "memory card error" at the end of the formatting process.

So..do I have a bad set of cards, the wrong size cards?


THis is it. Now I see it says that my camera must be SDHC compatable -- how do I find out that info?

I'm going to assume you actually have a Pentax istDL because the istD only takes compactflash cards. If you do have the ISTdl then here is your solution:

Well -- that explains why I didn't understand why they were writing about a compactflash card! Yes -- I have an istDL -- on the camera the L is red and huge. I really don't understand how I missed it. I'll check out that link. Thanks for your help.

The istDL will accept SDHC cards after you download and install the firmware update to allow it - without it you can only use up to 2GB cards. After the firmware update you can use as big as you want (I prefer to use 4GB cards in case one goes bad so you lose less in that dreaded event - we had a 2GB die in December and lost hundreds of photos...)
