SCRIP - Can I do this?

The school that my children attend does the SCRIP program, but we have not used it thus far. Our final payment for our upcoming trip is due in the beginning of October, and I happened to notice that Disney gift cards are available through SCRIP.

Is it possible for me to buy the $3K in Disney gift cards through SCRIP and then use those cards to pay off our WDW trip? Would it be a big pain in the butt to go this route, rather than simply paying one big payment from my bank account?

I figured it might be worth it to get that money back through SCRIP, but would love some input from those who have used the program in the past.

Not sure about using SCRIP to pay off your trip but you can use the gift cards to pay for everything else when your there. We just left a CC on file and used the room key for everything. Then the night before we checked out DH went to the front desk and used the gift cards to pay the bill so nothing was charged to our CC.

I'd call them and ask, "Can I apply the balance of a gift card to pay off my trip?" I don't see any reason why they wouldn't let you.

SCRIP is a great program!

I have used SCRIP to pay for previous Disney trips. I was dealing with a travel agents, so I would email her the GC numbers and she would apply them to the account. I would get them in as large increments as possible. Our SCRIP was able to get $25, $100 and special orders for $1000! You should also hold onto the cards in case you would need to cancel your trip for any reason.

For my school's scrip program, Disney only earns 1 or 2%. However, our local grocery store (Giant Eagle) scrip earns 5% and sells many other gift cards including Disney and Universal. So, I buy Giant Eagle scrip and then use the Giant Eagle gift cards to buy the Disney gift cards at Giant Eagle. That way I earn 5% instead of 1 or 2%.

That's kind of cool. I'll have to figure all this out. My DS starts kindergarten this year, so it will be my first time doing the SCRIP thing. I figure if I can get a few bucks of next year's tuition doing it through scrip, I'm all for it. Now to figure out all the tricks!

I do remember Chester Figment saying something to the effect that you could only use 3 forms (gift cards) of payment when paying off your trip. I would just make sure before you put all that money and it not working.

whats script?

It's scrip not script.;)

It's a program whereby non-profit organizations (maybe other groups, too) can buy retailer's gift cards at a discount. For example, you could buy a $100 Home Depot gift card through your non-profit and pay your school/non-profit $100 for it but the school/non-profit only pays the scrip company $95 for it - a 5% profit. Some schools allow this 5% ($5) to be applied towards your child's tuition. Other groups keep the profit and use scrip as a fundraiser. Our school keeps half and rebates half back to us towards tuition so everybody wins.

The only downside is that if you have to cancel for any reason, the money goes back to the gift cards and is tied up there. You can't get it refunded in cash.

Aside from that, there's no reason you couldn't. We just used scrip cards to put down the deposit on our March trip, and plan to pay the balance and our room charges the same way.

I am our schools scrip organizer and I saved up gift cards and used them on our last trip 2 years ago to pay for the dining plan and everything we bought down there. It was great not having to have a ton of cash or come home to a huge credit card bill. Plus we didn't over spend. Once the cards were gone, that was it.

The grandparents also gave the $25 GC to the kids for Christmas, so they had some of their own mad money to spend as well.:cool1:

That is crazy! (in a good way) What a great system

I have used scrip to pay off trips when I had a room only reservation. Paying when we checked in and it work fine. That way I didn't have to buy until right before and was not worried about having to cancel.

Great idea about buying the grocery store scrip and then using it for gift cards. Kohls can also be a good deal too as you can pay your bill with scrip and you get better sales sometimes using the Kohls credit card.

I heard about this recently and wondering what the heck it was. Since the parent has 2 kids in the private school, it saves him a huge chunk. Like if he purchases 400$ in scrip cards, he gets like 100$ knocked off the tuition. I don't remember the exact number, but the whole family usually pitches in and buys the different gift cards.

I did this for our trip last year and I'm going to do it again this year. Our school requires us to buy $200 in scrip a month. So by buying Disney cards I fulfill my obligation, earn money back towards tuition, and save for our vaction all in one. I called Disney before I did it just to confirm that the specific scrip cards could in fact be used to pay for our package and they said yes.

Thanks everyone!!! I think I might go for it, but I am going to call WDW to confirm before I put out the money on those gift cards. I so appreciate the info that was shared!!!

When you get the info, do you mind posting here? (BTW, I think GLSC has stopped carrying the $1000 gift cards. I was going to put an order in & they no longer show up, so my plan was to get $100 scrip, but if the 3 limit is in place, I may have to redo some stuf....)
