Does anyone know where I can get scrapbooking paper, embelishments, ribbons, buttons, etc cheap? It seems to be costing a small fortune to get started with scrapbooking.

Try the dollar stores. Sometimes they have some great scrapbooking supplies.

I wish you lived close to me, I could give you a ton! I need to declutter my stash. Maybe, you can check Craigslist or a local scrapbook store to see if anyone else is looking to get rid of stuff.

I like to check out scrapbooksteals.com every day - everything is always at least 50% off retail :thumbsup2

Hobby Lobby has 40% off coupons and 50% off paper and paper packs frequently during their weekly sale. They have really nice things if you live close to one. HTH.

Wow...I wish I did too. I'm so overwhelmed right now because I'm trying to start a scrapbook for DD graduation next year. I've decided to start with birth and go through her senior year.

Yikes! That's a lot of work. Another option is to go digital -- do a Shutterfly photo book or a digital scrapbook. I love digital! It creates a lot less clutter than traditional scrapbooking, too!

If you want traditional supplies, AC Moore, Michael's, etc, with coupons and sales are your best bets.

Michaels, AC Moore, Joanne's fabrics and Walmart all have scrapbooking supplies. With coupons you can save some $$. I would also suggest trying to find scrapbookers in your area (maybe through meetup.com, or asking other parents in your community) to see if anyone hosts a scrapbooking night, weekend, etc. b/c sometimes you can use their stamps and supplies for free!!!

It is a very expensive hobby, but it is worth every penny!

This is what I was going to suggest, esp since you haven't started yet. It seems complicated, but it's really easy to do digital and I love not having all the mess in the books! If you are interested and lost as to how to start digital scrapping feel free to PM me... I only started a little over a year ago and it was very hard to find info on how to start, everyone seemed to think you should already know so much already and it was very hard for me, glad to help if wanted! :goodvibes

Good suggestion, but I already have about 8 pages done and have made several purchases (Zots, mounting squares, extra papers, decorative scissors, large and small paper cutter, brads, some embellishments, ribbons, the scrapbook and some extra pages for the book itself.).

Hi, I am new to this board, and was so excited to find it. This is great. My son has been dreaming of a disney trip (he has special needs- and we have yet to be able to afford it) but are starting to save up to hopefully come within next couple of years. This site is great. I also love scrapbooking and especially on a budget (dollars stores are great- especially smart dollar- we also have scrapbooking yard sales - where other scrapbookers sell stuff they no longer need/want even unused sticker sheets = some wonderful deals). I have already gotten lots of Disney stickers in preparation for our trip. LOL!!!

Have one quick question. I was actually doing a search for these on-line and found this sight. Does anyone on here know where I can find Deluxe Design Colorblocking Templates (12x12 size). I know lots of people purchased them years ago and many just don't use them (says it takes too much time) but I love them. Hoping someone has some I can buy. I have been into this type of scrapbooking for some time now and can not find these two (they will complete my collection). 13-B and 33-D - I will pay for them plus S&H!

Thanks,

I LOVE scrapbooking and, too, have way too much but keep buying all the time. Since you're just starting, only buy what you need right now so you aren't overwhelmed with extra supplies. I NEVER pay full price! As mentioned, use the coupons for JoAnn's and Michaels and any other place. I also buy off eBay. I have found some great stuff for "pennies" and free shipping.

If you can find someone to do it with, that's fun and can save money as you can share supplies.

Start slow and find every coupon you can for 40-50% off or wait for the same sales. You can use other stores coupons at each store here.

I also got a ton of neat stuff to try at yard sales that I wouldn't have bought but now that tried them love them.

Actually I think scrapbooking is one of the inexpensive hobbies. I mean compared to horseback riding or even attending sporting events.

I started a few months ago, I like the scrapbooks rather than digital. just some thing special about cracking open the book and flipping the pages imo.

Anyway, Joannes is always having sales especially on paper. Also I like scrapbook.com for their disney specific stuff. Also I keep stuff to use from vacations. park passes, park maps things like that make great stickies for your pages.

I've been digital scrapbooking for over three years and love it! There is no mess to clean up, way cheaper than traditional scrapbooking, and you can get multiple copies of the same book (i.e., siblings who want a copy of their parents 50th Anniversary Book). PM me for more info.

I try to find supplies on clearance at Hobby Lobby. They put their clearance stuff in the back of the store and they usually have a ton of scrapbooking stuff - you just have to dig through sometimes. I have also found things at Target on clearance, Big Lots and I use coupons at Joann's. I know many people who use eBay, so you may check there. You might have to buy 'lots' to make it worth the shipping.

I am another fan of digital scrapbooking. The software I use (creative memories) lets me use the same embellishment over and over because I can change the colors, textures, all kinds of stuff. There are a ton of free embellisments and even papers you can find online. I am actually in the process of getting rid of all my traditional scrapbook stuff because I never use it. I love the digital! Plus, I found a place to print out page prints for a buck a piece. I can't print the pictures to put on a page for that! If you are just starting out, and have the option to choose, I think it is much more economical.

One way to help with embelishments is to keep things like ticket stubs, maps, napkins from special places that you go to. We were at WDW in July and I kept all the maps, napkins from sit down places, our tickets, etc. It really adds up and you have a lot of unique stuff.

Try Craigslist. When I quit selling Creative Memories I sold a ton of my stock on there for bargain basement prices.

I find a lot of good deals at Tuesday Morning, which is a chain that sells stock after it has been discontinued from other retailers. They seem to get stock from Target and Michaels. They often have paper packs, 25 sheets for $1.99, or some brands of paper stacks for $3.99. They also always have albums.

But the key to controlling scrapbook costs is only buy what you truly need, and don't get sucked into trends and having the latest and greatest. My basics list:

Album & page protectors
Paper Trimmer
Good pair of fine tipped scissors
Metal ruler
Black Journaling Pen
Adhesive
Cardstock and Patterned paper to match your current project.

Everything else: stickers, brads, eyelets, ribbon, buttons, chipboard, fancy alphas, flowers, etc. They aren't really necessary. And if you only pick up some of these things occasionally, and have an idea on how they will be used, it will help keep your budget in check. And like everyone says, shop sales and coupons.

Now, if you've decided that scrapbooking is your thing, and you aren't going to get tired of it and move on to a different hobby in a few weeks, there are 3 "big ticket" purchases that I recommend. I think these will save money in the long run.

Making Memories Paper Trimmer. It retails for $50, but you can buy it with a 50% off coupon at Michaels. It has a self-sharpening blade. With the basic Fiskars type paper trimmers, you end up spending quite a bit of money on blades.

ATG tape Gun - I ordered mine from http://www.framingsupplies.com/3M/ScrapbookersTapeGunsandTapesPage.htm , although Michaels is just starting to carry the pink version. The cost for the gun with shipping is over $50, but the tape refills are about $3.50. The stuff you buy in the scrapping department can cost $5+, and only last you a fraction of the time. Look at a tape runner, and the length will be measured in feet, this tape is measured in yards. And the big thing, it stops working. You might go back to your albums and see pieces falling off. Not with the ATG tape.

Cricut - Because buying letter stickers is expensive, and cutting them by hand gets time consuming. There are always good deals online, and with Black Friday coming up, there will be good deals in the stores.
