My DW would like to know if the Buttons and thread used in scrapbooks are special acid free ones bought in a scrapping shop or are they just regular buttons??

Seems like a stupid question to me - but she wants to know anyway........

Also any other accessories?

The buttons made specifically for scrapbooking are much thinner then regular buttons, but you could use regular buttons. The cotton embroidery floss is the same. The brads have smaller legs. They are all made to create less bulk.

Now the glitter and shiny fun things are made differently then ones for regular craft projects. I am not sure what the exact difference is.

hope this helps.

I don't think that they are acid free. With all of the new embellishments that are so popular now most aren't and you are just instructed to keep them away from your pictures.

Just want to say thank you for your help. I am new to scrapbooking and find a few basic things a bit confusing. But lots of help in these threads. Thanks again. Smax wife, Theresly.

You can use any fabric or thread and it won't hurt your photos-- ditto with buttons, plastic, metal, whatever. It's paper that you have to be concerned about.

I had a huge pile of buttons that I had been collecting over the years-- you know how we get extra buttons with every new shirt we buy. I went through them and sorted them by color and now I have a nice selection for when I want to use a button on a layout! :D

BTW, I haven't found that the scrapbooking brads are any different from the regular brads you can buy at a store. I purchased a few individually from my scrapbook store, then bought 100 of them from Target. They were the same thing!! :O The only difference was I paid 5 cents a piece for the ones from the LSS, and only 1 cent for the ones from Target.

Of course, Target doesn't carry the adorable little colored mini brads, so I still have to pay premium for those (but I buy them online to reduce the cost again).

Hi Smax and Theresly - fancy meeting you here;)

I have used buttons from here
http://www.memorycrafts.co.uk/

they are just normal buttons for sewing etc - but in cute designs, some of them are quite bulky though - I've used some very cute teddies and they are a bit thicker than I am comfortable with.

the scrapbooking shops sell extra thin buttons, but they tend to be your round normal looking buttons. In the UK, you can get them here

I get my brads from the same place 200 for £2.35 -
they are much smaller than regular paper fasteners - but other than that they look exactly the same.

Hope to see some pages soon:D

I agree with Bev, the LSS's seem to sell just the round colored ones. I got my buttons at the Memories Expo in Orlando last year, stars and hearts. I didn't use them for a long time but once I did, I wished I had gotten more shapes. I didn't keep the packaging so I can't even find the store on the web. The store was in California somewhere so that narrows it down a bit. lol.

You are getting good information here. I just have a couple of things to add. Most glitter that you buy in a craft store is not supposed to be safe for your scrapbook. The scrapbooking variety is nylon or something like that, meant to be less abrasive and more safe.

I just learned last month that if a button you want to use has a shank, you can usually snip it off with toe-nail clippers. These clippers are also great for snipping wire (if you like to use it on your pages).
