Heroism Award The Heroism Award may be awarded to a youth member or adult leader who has demonstrated heroism and skill in saving or attempting to save life at minimum risk to self.

After kayaking at Hilton Head Island (while guests at Disney DVC resort), we were attempting to get back onto the dock. My 9 yr old son & I had shared a kayak. My 10 yr old son & 14 yr old niece each had their own single kayak. 14 yr old is hanging onto the dock - still in her kayak. 9 yr old got out of our kayak & tied it up (without instruction :) ) 9 yr old was headed to tie his cousin's kayak to the other end of the dock. 10 yr old was still approaching the dock area (We don't call him "lolly" for nothing - it is short for lolly-gagger.) I am busy retrieving camera, camcorder, waterbottles, towels... from our kayak when my niece screams my oldest's name. After 1.5 weeks in a condo with 3 kids, one screaming another's name is NOT noteworthy - or so I thought. After hoisting myself onto the dock from the kayak, I see that my 9 yr old is hanging onto a canoe oar for dear live. At the other end of the oar, is his 10 yr old brother - IN THE CREEK. From his position in the creek, the water is flowing away from the dock. Luckily he had his life jacket on securely. My 9 year old had calmly & without instruction (2x in a row!) thought to extend the oar to his brother & instructed him to grab hold. My 9 yr old was very calm & reacted perfectly in the situation. He hung onto the oar with his brother at the other end until I was able to get there & hoist him out of the water. My 9 yr old was using all of his might to stay on that dock and hang onto the oar. The dock was nothing but flat boards with no railing or edging - just a drop straight into the creek. I had to brace my foot against the boat tie hardware for leverage in pulling my 10 yr old out of the water. My niece was still in her kayak and not in a position to do much but keep herself safe. My 10 yr old seemed to think the whole thing was one great adventure. I one the other hand, looked like this:  Did I mention that we have always considered the 10 yr old the more level headed of the two? I can't think about how the situation could have turned out. They haven't even hit their teens!

Needless to say, I am extremely grateful & proud of my 9 yr old's quick reaction. He is a cub scout and I was thinking that his actions might warrent recognition. What do you think?

You lost your link. Interested in the topic, though.

I didn't find that post to be all that long personally

only short because I hit enter before I wrote my novel. I editted it to make it really l-o-n-g.

Yes. A friends daughter earned the same sort of thing from the girl scouts for grabbing a kid about to run into the street. Actually she crossed trafic to do it, which I felt was contrary to taking care of self!

BTW, awesome kid you have there!

I"m a mom of 2 Eagle Scouts - and I would!! It shows that your son is setting a good example - and that is worthy of praise, how often do we read of boys (et el) getting into trouble?

Call the local council and ask them for guidlelines, read the Boy's Life magazine and see if there is any more information there too...

Brag away! Its a great thing!!

2 Eagle scouts?! Good job! We are just now in an area where we have access to the scouts! The boys are really excited about joining.

The key is to be involved with your sons, and to strengthen the values of scouting at home too - we have had wonderful dinner discussions... My olldest is 18, and hard of hearing, he didnt really fit in at school, but blossomed because of scouting. My 2nd loves camping, and tying knots - both are counselors at the summer camp for the entire summer - its wonderful not having to have them sleep till noon as teenagers, they feel they have a place in this world NOW!!

My dh and I are both involved at the troop level, and at the training level (I'm a teacher, how can I not teach?!!)

Have fun!! Cub Scouts was very hard for me, I couldnt get that involved, again, we kept the discussions up at home, and focused on the rewards of being a Boy Scout (Cub Scouts is all about adult leadership, Boy Scouts is all about YOUTH led!)

Many Cub Scouts get burned out if the parent gets over involved (and some involvement is necessary of course!)

What...did someone tell you I was too involved?;) They are 5,7 and 10, so we are still looking at cubs. Little guy can't wait until next year! Thanks for the info and encouragement!

As the mom of an Eagle Scout, I heartily say, "Yes, what your son did was very heroic!"

In the back of the Boy Scout Handbook is a section on the Heroism recognition, there is also an article is just about every issue of Boy's Life.

I second what one of the other poster's said, contact your Local Scout Council office and ask them how to nominate your son. You will need the dates, location, specifics, etc.

Please tell your son that he did a very brave thing and that I am proud of him.

When our son was 12 and a Second Class Scout, he very calmly helped put out a fire that my DD caused in her bedroom with candles (which have since been banned), I mentioned it to the Scoutmaster but nothing was ever done. That was 4 years ago and I have kicked myself many times over for dropping the ball and not submitting his deed to National.

eeyore45, are your sons going to National Jamboree next year? Mine his -this will be his 2nd time. He is also heading out to Iowa in a couple of weeks for NOAC. He also did a Philmont Trek last year and can't wait to go back there!! :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I will follow through with the nomination. My son is already wondering whether he could would be eligible for "some kind of award". I hadn't mentioned it to him because I didn't want to get his hopes up and also because I thought it would be a wonderful surprise. He has been reading about the awards in Boy's Life. He was able to rattle off a list of things other boys have been awarded for. And I thought he only looked at the cartoons.
Congratulations on the Eagle Scouts x2! That is an accomplishment - for the parents as well as the young men.

Absolutely! At that age, just keeping his head and offering help was worthy of notice, let alone actually successfully keeping his brother from harm. Our next door neighbors son was about 14 when his Dad cut his finger off while woodworking. He called 911 and got recognized for something at Boy Scouts (don't think it was a heroism award, but something like a good turn). Most of the write ups I've seen in Boy's Life for Cub Scouts haven't been nearly so difficult a situation as you described.

Congratulations on a great job raising your son, and I'm so glad everything turned out okay.

UPDATE: The ball is rolling!
I emailed my son's story to the committee chair this morning. It has worked it's way "through channels" and everyone up to the district commissioner feels my son
is certainly a good candidate for the Lifesaving award.
.
If I understand the process, the recommendation goes to the Area Council - which encompasses 2 states & DC. If the council deems it worthy, it is then forwarded to the "National Court of Honor".
I have written my required "eyewitness account" and my niece is working on her version. I will have each of the boys write their version tomorrow.
I'll keep you posted.

That is great! Good for you for following through! Thanks for keeping us posted!
