I've just been browsing the Virigin Holidays - checking prices for July first two weeks in July next year, from their new departure point....GLASGOW!

I was pretty disgusted to find that a 14 night holiday from Glasgow, staying at at All Star Resort, first two weeks in July costs a staggering 540 quid more than the same holiday, flying from Manchester on the same day..............that'll be because it's the first two weeks of our school kids holidays then!! It's sad to think that after all these years of wishing for Virgin to start a Scottish flight to Orlando, that we're now going to be ripped off at the first opportunity.

Rant over:rolleyes:

[sarcasm]... but of course they're not ripping you off, it's supply and demand [/sarcasm] :furious:

Tank & half of petrol + Travelodge the night before £100,save £400!! Of course you then have the 4 hour drive back up the road at the end of the holiday, which always seems a good idea at the time!!
SD :firefight

Or get a kind relative to drop you off and pick you up?

We live about 90 mins (on a good run) from Manchester airport travelling over the peak district from Stockport, towards Buxton and then down the A6 to Matlock. I've never fancied the idea of driving back after the flight. Besides, my poor Mondeo wouldn't take me, my DW, 3 kids and the mountain of suit cases!

... or family railcard and 2 adults and 2 kids get there on the train for around £100

our TA priced it for next year for us. 4 of us plus my Mum and Dad for a fly drive and it was £1800 MORE then MY Travel and that was us travelling Premair with MY Travel and including all the car insurance upgrades. You can gather we went with MY Travel :thumbsup2

they won't find me paying over the odds like that but I sometimes wonder if some people will pay that because it is Virgin :confused3

Oh dear..oh dear :confused3 Wouldn't it be great if there was a big enough boycott that they had to lower their prices, dreaming I know...

I pay Virgin and fly from Gatwick because they fly out 7 days a week, 2 flights a day - 3 in the summer.

Therefore I can fly the day I want rather than a weekend on charter and pay a weekend supplement as well

I must be missing something Grumpy John but dont Virgin charge a weekend supplement as well?

In addition it does make me mad that they are exploiting us again. I wanted to book with them again this year and they wanted £139 each fro me and hubby to get a connecting flight from Glasgow. I booked with American Airlines from Glasgow and the hotels direct and saved fortune. Oh well dont suppose they will miss my custom.

The problem with these "new" Virgin flights is that we still have to drive the 3-4 hours to Glasgow, with a possible stay overnight, as well. THEN drive all the way back up the road again when we get home!

By the sound of things, it'll still be cheaper (and more convenient) for me to pay a cab into Aberdeen airport, pay for a flight to London and maybe an overnight hotel stay there, too! :rotfl2:

No incentive for us up north to fly from our own country then! :rolleyes2

Just imagine how expensive the flights to the USA will be when Aberdeen get their extended runway! (Sometime in the future - they're very vague about when this will actually be complete!) :sad2:

To add insult to injury Virgin will only fly from Glasgow on Saturdays but will still charge the weekend supplement.
£540 more than for the same holiday from Manchester, on the same flight that originates in .......Manchester. Crazy! :furious:

I don't think we'll be flying with Virgin from Glasgow either :sad2:

To add insult to injury I bet you all notice which direction those planes take from Man & LHR/LGW! Our most hassle free trip was the year BA were doing free UK connections,we were back in the house by 10:00.Seriously considered going with them again this time, charters were out either because we want to go for 3 weeks or we're restricted on when we can go,but Jetsave won on price - VA flights cheaper than VA-how does that work!? So it's off down to Manchester again...........

Also read about VH flying from Glasgow next year, but they are only doing 4 flights in july and 3 flights in october during school holidays.

I looked into the VA from Glasgow but couldn't see any fly-drive prices so we'll stick with Manchester.

It'll be interesting to see how the prices Delta charge from Edinburgh-Atlanta compare although I much prefer the direct flight, even if it has a 4hr drive on return. When Continental started flying Edinburgh-Newark I thought that would be good for us but their prices are always ludicrously high.

Seems to me that Scotland is just not the place to get cheap flights.

Thing is I think many of us miss the point that it also effects people in the West Country. Imagine travelling to Gatwick from Cornwall. Holiday companies can not please everyone. Somebody has to be unhappy. :bitelip:

Sorry guys no offence is intended by this. :guilty:

Perhaps more of you stand your ground then VA may drop thier prices? :confused3

I do travel from cornwall to LGW and LHR regularly, its just one of those things, like you say, we have to put up with. I suppose some recompense comes from the fact that I live in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK (but that doesn't really help on the 4 hour journey back from london :rotfl2: )

I think the main point is this: Virgin are making a big point of promoting the fact that they are doing all of us North of the border a favour by putting on Scottish flights! But where is the sense in that it is by far cheaper for us to overnight at a hotel & travel to Manchester there & back? I know that everyone doesn't have an airport on their doorstep ( I live 30 mins from Glasgow) but imagine if VA announced that they were going to do flights out of Newquay but when it came to it,only on Saturday & we'll charge you £500/£600 extra for the privilege. Not to mention the fact that the planes fly to Scotland before crossing the Irish sea!!
I realise that every airline does it but what I can't understand is why, when London is so expensive to live & work in,does it cost more to fly from everywhere apart from London?

Mainly because the flights operate so frequently from lhr/lgw they can negotiate much better airport fees, these cover everything from 'renting' check in desks to baggage handling, security and runway staff fees.

Fair point. I am not sure what youi can do really other than dont book. Perhaps email them why and hopefully the more they receive people not booking then they might sort it out.
