Scooters - Handicap room needed?

This might be a silly question.

For our October trip someone in our party of 8 will be needing a scooter. This is all new to us. He can walk some with a cane but will not be able to walk or stand for long. Not sure if he should rent one from outside - are you guaranteed one each day at the park, are there any at the resort, etc.

Also - something else came into mind yesterday - if he has no problem lifting his leg over the bathtub - he won't need a handicap room right? Just worried if scooter will get through the door I guess.

I know - sorry - probably stupid but don't want to get there and find out later.

A scooter will fit in a regular room. I had one at Pop, and all we needed to do was move one of the chairs from around the table. I rented from off-site this trip, and it was the best choice for me--saved a ton of money and had it all the time. The buses were not near as much of a nightmare as I feared they would be.

can be rented at the parks, but it can be as expensive as double from and outside rental places depending on the size and kind you get. Also, park scooters are first come, first serve; you can't reserve them in advance from Disney. You can be put on a waiting list for a scooter at a Disney park, but you really need a cell phone for that to work. We got caught once having to wait for one and it took a couple of hours.

The outside rental companies deliver to the resort. The nice thing with an outside rental company is you can then use it at the resort, as well as, the parks. Keep in mind, that smaller scooters are cheaper and easier to handle on the buses and such. They fit into cars, too. The down side of it is that you have to do your own charging of the unit each day. The smaller units have to be done each day. The door width is big enough, but I find having a person holding the door is easier to get it in and out of the room. The smaller units don't come with built in headlights. We bring bike headlights with us. They can be had for $10 or use one off a bike you own if you have a detachable one. Always keep your charger with you in the parks. Scooters can be recharged at the parks if this becomes necessary. The secret here is to remember to charge the scooter fully each night and not to keep the scooter on all day when it's not necessary. As an example, shut the scooter off when you are seeing a show, or in a ride queue that takes a long time, or fireworks, or a parade. This extends the life of the battery charge. By the way, you do have a manual overdrive on the scooter that allows pushing the scooter if you get caught with a battery that is dead.

All rooms, even at the value resorts, have 36 inch wide doors while EVCs are 24 or fewer inches wide. Once you are in the room it is fairly easy to find an out of the way parking space; you may have to move a minor piece of furniture. Most ECV off-board chargers tend to have a six foot wire to the wall outlet and about four foot to the ECV. You might want to bring along a six foot extension cord (of at least 10 amp capacity) just in case it is needed.
