ScoJo's Running Down a Dream Journal (comments welcome)

:goodvibes Great runs Scott!!! You had another wonderful week of exercising. I'm so impressed with your continued improvements and incredible determination run after run!!! You are just so fast!!! :cheer2:

Sooo bummed no new office today :guilty: . My favorite show! I always look forward to it. Hmmmm....I guess I might actually get something done around the house tonight since both the office and survivor aren't new :teeth: .

Hey Scott,

You are doing a great job with your training! Keep up the good work! :thumbsup2

Hope you have a good weekend! :sunny: Go Buckeyes! :cheer2:

Hey Scott! Hope your trip is going well! We miss ya.

 Hi Scott!

Hope training has been going ok for you this week!! Did you catch Survivor and The Office tonight??? Good episodes there :).

Good luck on the 14 miler this weekend. I know I'm a bit nervous and yet in some way still looking forward to crossing that "halfway mark". I'll be thinking of you when I'm out there in the cold (brrrrr) running for 2.5 hours!!!! I'm sure your run won't be as long LOL! But good luck! Hope all is well :).

Good morning! Has it really been a week since i posted? Wow..time flies when you have stuff to do LOL

I'll get to the numbers in a second...first a recap of the week that was ;)

Thursday - did 40 minutes on the elliptical
Friday - traveled to Virginia on business...no exercise
Saturday - was in VA, did manage a 6 mile run but have no idea of my pace..it was a nice easy run with 30mph winds swirling the whole time (at least the leaves were pretty) :teeth:
Sunday - drove back home
Monday - did a 60 minute run thru the 'hood. I covered 6.59 miles in 60:22 for an average of 9:10mpm. A fast run by my standards and I felt really good the whole time.
Tuesday - Was really sick in the morning  (something I ate maybe?) so I scrapped the XT. Fortunately, things subsided by the afternoon so that I could participate in the Halloween festivites.
Wednesday - Took the advice of the experts and rested for an additional day after being sick. I really wanted to get out there but I know that my body could use the extra time to refuel. So I missed my 40 min run. :(
Thursday - Got my butt back out there finally!! Whew...and my time showed how happy I was :thumbsup2 I did the 45 min run....covered 5.065 miles for a pace of 8:53!! Was real happy to see the sub 9 average for a run of this nature. I felt strong the whole time. I guess the extra rest day paid off :teeth:

So that brings us to today. I've got a 30 minute XT session on tap, followed by a 14 mile run tomorrow. Yep..14 MILES!! It's amazing to type that out and then read it back. NEVER did I EVER think I'd run 14 miles for ANY reason!! So yeah, that's the reason the 14 was up there at the start of my post. And the 33?? It's gonna be 33 DEGREES when I run tomorrow YIKES! Is it finally time to go looking for some running pants? So not only am I loco enough to run 14 miles, but I'm gonna do it in freezing temperatures...have I lost my mind? :confused3

But there are only 4 more long runs (hence the 4) including this one in between me and that marathon, which is only 65 days away now!! (see the numbers make sense ;)

So it's time to load up a 2-2.5 hour playlist tonight and hit the trail with my gel packs and my water. This run will be over half the distance of the real deal and I'm really pretty anxious to get out there and see how I do. And yes, I'll post tomorrow with the splits and results.

:offtopic: OMG...Lost this past Wednesday...i did NOT see THAT coming!! And the previews for next week look soo good!! And we heard Locke speak the line that Eko first said last year..."don't mistake coincidence for fate"...I think it's key for the entire deal. I've gotta get caught back up with Survivor and The Office...and I'm really enjoying the Amazing Race now (even if I thought it was VERY odd that Kentucky was saved again :scratchin:

Anyway..Have a great weekend everyone!!!

You crack me up with the numbers at the top. You're definitely a die hard LOST fan!! :rotfl:

So......how did the 14 miler go today?? :confused3 I can't wait to hear about it! I'm sure that you did GREAT!

You'll have to fill me in sometime on how you handle your music on your MP3. I'm guessing ours is the same setup, except that you have more memory. I need some help from ya!

LOST - poor, poor Eko. Love the scene with Juliette & Jack. Really made me think. Unfortunately I won't be able to watch next week's until at least the 15th....so sad :guilty: .

Welcome Back Scott!

How did your 14 miler go? I'm sure you posted some amazing times! :thumbsup2 Hope it went well for you. :goodvibes

Have a great Sunday! :sunny:

I know the feeling all too well!!

Hey Scott,

Sorry to hear about that :( ..... I hate when the computer doesn't cooperate. :badpc: I hope you have a great Monday! :sunny: I look forward to hearing all about the 14 miler soon! :goodvibes

Hi Scott,

Wow, 14 miles!!! That is great!!! You really are doing great! You are going to do wonderful in the marathon....hard to believe that it's only 60, give or take a few day, away!!!

Keep up the great work!!!

Have a great day :)

My forearms propped up my hunched over body on the island in the kitchen. My legs did not want to move and I felt completely drained and depleted. I was starting to get very cold and my hands were even beginning to get numb. It was all I had just to make it over to the stairs where I went down to both knees...head on a step...mustering up the strength needed to make it to the bedroom and get some dry clothes on. How did I get here? Allow me to back up a few hours...

I woke up early Saturday morning feeling good. The temperatures outside were in the low 30s, so I was very glad that I had stopped the night before and bought some new running pants (Nike Dri-Fit ones :) ) I put them on, added a long sleeve t-shirt and went downstairs to pack up the suitcase. Ok, so I don't take a suitcase with me when I run but it sure feels like I need one sometimes! Between the mp3 player, heart rate monitor, 2 bottles of water, 1 bottle of Propel, 2 gel packs, gloves, hat and towel...it actually takes more than one trip to the car to get it all in LOL!

I arrived at the trail to find it under construction in some parts. They were digging up a huge path in the middle of the field and it bisected the trail in a couple places, turning part of it into a cross country style adventure, having to watch your footing amongst the huge tire tracks in the softened dirt. I guess it was that along with the temperatures that kept a lot of runners and walkers away that morning. But not me :) I was to run 14 miles....over half the distance of the marathon....and nothing was gonna prevent me from that. Thank goodness the construction had halted, it ended up being me, a few other runners and some random deer and rabbits running through the nearby woods.

The run started off exactly as planned and the first 10 or so miles went about as routine as running 10 miles can get. I popped a gel pack (green apple, yummy!) during mile 5 and removed the gloves around the 9 mile mark. It was somewhere during that 10th mile that things got interesting. I did take another gel pack (strawberry banana, yummy!) just prior to mile 11, but then started to zone out again sortly afterwards. You see, during the 12 miler two weeks ago I felt a very odd sensation towards the end of the run...I even had to 'snap out of it' and get my mind focused on walking back to the car....I chalked it up to just zoning out. Well, it happened again and it's such an indescribable experience. It's like my mind becomes over sensitive to my body and surroundings...peripheral vision decreases a bit and I become completely focused on the path ahead of me. It's like you don't have to think about running, your body is just doing it for you and your mind gets to escape a bit. It's so hard to put it into words but it's a very different type of feeling. The research I've done has led me to believe that it is a form of Runner's High caused by the endorphins in my system.

But soon after that feeling subsided, the run became very difficult. I found myself constantly looking at my Polar to see when the next walk break would come up. I had the presence of mind to slow way down to prevent injury and power through those last two miles. I finished the run and walked the half mile back to the beginning of the trail.

I did a long stretch, focused on my calves and quads as they were already starting to ache a bit. Normally, I'd go walk a mile or two as a cool down and to try and stay loose but I couldn't do it today. I made it about a tenth of a mile before turning back, getting in the car and driving myself back home.

As soon as I got out of the car in the garage it all hit me. My legs just did not want to go any further...I got very cold and my hands even started getting numb (esp my thumbs). I wanted to change clothes but only made it as far as the kitchen initially (which is located right inside my garage).

Never in my life have I felt so completely depleted and drained as I did that morning. Concern really set in once I managed to make it upstairs and laid down on the bed. I just wanted to sleep...I was very hungry...and I was freezing. I was so dehydrated that I actually had salt on my face and clothing instead of sweat. If I was ever gonna doubt if I had what it took to run this race, it was at that moment. But this is about proving to myself that I can push beyond anything, that I will not quit, and nothing will get in my way. So I gave myself a mental pep talk, got back up and changed clothes.

I started to feel better once I had dry and warm clothes on. My hands were still an issue and my legs ached pretty bad but I was able to make it back downstairs and go get some food shortly thereafter.

I recovered once I had food in my system and managed to take a long nap. I was still sore in my legs, but could get around pretty easily. By Sunday, everything felt pretty good again (thank goodness).

So I've learned a couple of things from my Saturday experience. First, I need to slow down a bit during those long runs. There is no reason to exhaust myself during training...I'll save that for the race if need be. Second, I need to change clothing after the runs, especially in the cold. I think keeping my wet long sleeve shirt on decreased my body temp or something, making me very cold. Third, I need to properly hydrate and stay focused on my nutrition. I didn't eat well last week and I know I was lacking in the water category...plus, I had been sick on Wed so I'm sure that drained me as well. Overall, I just need to get my butt into gear and really focus on the training from here on out. Training and running a marathon is no joke.

So with that said...I made a solid meal plan for the week and I'm already hydrating like crazy (oh yeah...I'm a runner now, so I don't drink water...I hydrate LOL ). I'm focused on this week's schedule which is as follows:

Today - 60 min hood run
Tuesday - 40 min XT
Wednesday - 40 min hood run
Thurs - off!!
Friday - 40 min XT
Saturday - 8 mile LR

And oh yeah...almost forgot to mention the results of that 14 mile run. Check this out:

Mile 1 - 8:09
2 - 8:40
3 - 8:49
4 - 8:38
5 - 8:39
6 - 8:58
7 - 8:43
8 - 8:21
9 - 8:47
10 - 8:49
11 - 8:58
12 - 8:42
13 - 9:06
14 - 9:21

Overall - 2:02:40
8:46mpm Pace
178/164 HR

So that's it from the training side of things! Sorry to pull all the dramatics but it was kind of fun to write it that way ;) I hope everyone has a great week!!

OH....MY.....LORD!!!

Scott, that is INTENSE!! Go you for doing SO awesome!! But you had to seriously be SPEEDING for a full 2 hours!!! :moped: I think that what you said makes complete sense...on your super-long runs...it's more about doing it than killing yourself to go really fast. Save it up for race day!!

Thanks so much for the descriptive post! I really feel like I knew what you were going through!

60 minute run today should be nuthin!! :rotfl:

How do you and Amy find these trails? I'd bet I have some around me too, but I have no idea where. :confused3

Wow.... where to begin Scott :confused3 . Our runs couldn't have been much different. Then again...you did run over 3 mpms faster than me  . But seriously, you are really supposed to be running your LRs at approximately 2 minutes slower than your pace. I know you're fast....but I don't think you are planning to run the marathon in sub-7s. But hey...maybe you are...in which case.....good luck with that!!!! My pledge to run this thing with you only extends to 10 mpms or slower. Sorry buddy....you may need to give Lance a call! :lmao: .

Honestly, you (and me for that matter) have to take the rest of training seriously in terms of hydration and nutrition. I know that what you experienced isn't necessarily uncommon, but it is a sign that your body was totally depleted and that's not where you want to be...particularly during a training run. I'm assuming you are out there on your own when you run...so just please be careful!!! But...with that said....althought my run was not nearly as filled with Spielberg-esque drama.....I did have salt all over my face when I finished. Isn't that sooo weird?!?! But zone out? Runners High? Somebody PLEASE tell me when I get to experience those things??? :confused3 Geeze...the only good benefit i can imagine from running all these miles and it's a mystery to me. I just pound along the trail waving to strangers and petting 3-Legged dogs named Evaline (yeah...I'm a social runner lol). I hate being out there alone so I try to feel connected to those around me. Nearly felt physically connected to the guy who almost ran me over on his 10 speed :rotfl: . That would have made for some good drama?! ;) But back to you....SUPER effort....I'm just so impressed with your speed and endurance. I would be happy to post a long run in the low 10's....you've so far exceeded my running lol. You have mad running skills Scott! :cheer2:

Your report was incredible. It really felt like I was there with you the whole time!!! Just make sure you are taking care of yourself. Althought it makes for good reading...remember that your goal is to get to the starting line healthy!!!! :goodvibes

Wow Scott!

Those times (splits?) are incredible! What a run! I'm glad that you plan to take it a bit easier during training though because that post run report had me a little worried.... That's good that you chose to listen to your body and not over do it. :goodvibes

I'm sending you training pixiedust: for the rest of your week.... I hope everything goes super smoothly! :thumbsup2

Have a great week! :sunny:

Ok ok...less dramatic post today ;)

Last night it was back to the bump and grind of the regular weekly schedule. I was curious as to how the run would turn out after the events on Saturday, but I had eaten a lot of food Sunday and hydrated properly both Sunday and Monday at work so I was set up for success.

I consciously did not push the pace at all and really tried to enjoy the run as much as possible. All was well the entire way except that my right knee acted up around mile 5. It got pretty stiff and was a major concern for a few minutes. Luckily, the irritation subsided and I finished the run without further incident. I was even able to stretch it out without any pain. I did the 60 minute run in 60:59, covering 6.59 miles for an average of 9:15mpm. I also added a circuit of the arm/ab deal, but did substitute the scissors with some additional crunches.

Last night, the back of my knee was acting up again and felt uncomfortable even while sitting watching tv (Go Thrashers!!). That issue also went away overnight and it feels fine walking around on it today.

I guess I'm just faced with the fact that there will be aches and pains for the rest of the way through this training and it's gonna come down to not pushing myself too much and learning how to deal with anything that pops up.

Today is a 40 minute cross training session. I'm either gonna do the elliptical for the entire 40, or do a 20/20 split with the LifeCycle. For some reason, I just don't feel like exercising at all today...just one of those days I guess! These are the kind of days that once you drag your behind to the fitness center and get the workout in, you are so happy afterwards that you did it.

I hope everyone has a great day today and thanks for taking the time to read my journal...I really appreciate it :)

So yesterday I didn't feel like the XT so I just skipped it...what the heck..who needs it? :confused3 Decided to just veg out in front of the tv :happytv: watching Talledega Nights with a box of donuts and a few cold beers :drinking1

(yeah right!) :rotfl2:

beer? tv? veg out? no exercise? Not good ol' marathon me!! ;)

Instead, i dragged myself up to the fitness center. I got there and weighed myself, very satisfied with 191.6 (same as last Friday)..and then headed over to the only available elliptical. I threw my towel over the LED readouts and started to grind out the run. 40 minutes later I was all pumped up and sweaty from 4.61 virtual miles of Papa Roach infused elliptical goodness. And as always, I was super glad that I was able to get there and get that workout in. :goodvibes

So today will be a 40 minute jaunt thru the hilly subdivision after work. I'm NOT gonna push it, but I'm gonna set a nice solid pace from the get go and bust it out. I have to admit that my legs are a bit tired already today and I'm feeling slightly drained. Hopefully the pasta heavy lunch will do me some good and give me the energy to get thru tonights run.

And of course...it's WEDNESDAY!!! WOO HOOO!! Unless you live in a cave, you know that tonight is the biggest and best episode of Lost ever! (or at least that's what the ad's and people associated with the show are saying) To say I'm a little excited is an understatement....but I'm sure they'll leave us hanging as usual and it will make for a long 3 month hiatus. (don't you just love that word "hiatus"? Conjures up this image of a big Sesame Street style foam 'Hi' munching on some kids...them scurrying back home screaming "hi ate us!"...ok...just a glimpse into my twisted train of thought).

Anyway...that's enough rambling on for today. Got stuff to do. You probably do too...which is what makes these boards so great! ;)

Have a good Wednesday everyone!

Hmmm...three days in a row....three posts in a row :(

So, last night I completed the 40 minute run. I decided to just do 4 miles as opposed to the 40 minutes and ended up completing the run in 36:39, which equals out to a 9:10 mpm pace.

Today is a rest day and I plan on doing just that! Can't wait to see The Office tonight...it's supposedly the best one yet (they announce the closing of the Scranton branch!).

Hope everyone has a great day!

Enjoy your rest day and The Office :goodvibes .... Do you watch My Name is Earl too?

Have a great Friday! :sunny:

P.S. Is your trip report (ahem ** cough cough**) done yet? ;) :teeth:
