SciFi- onion rings

doubt it. A plate of onion rings goes for $6.99 on the appetizers, can't see them allowing a free substitution like that

It's a $2 charge to substitute, but they won't let you substitute if you use your TS credits on the dining plan. That's what our waiter told us.

Just ate lunch there on Sunday and did this, it was over $2.00 to substitute onion rings for fries. I want to say maybe $2.49? They were worth it though.

Yes they will substitute, and you don't have to pay for the upcharge if you are on the dining plan. Been there, Done that, have the tshirt to prove it. :cool1:

on my only visit there in this past summer I sub-ed the onion rings for frees without paying...maybe it has changed...but yeah those rings were grand@!

Just have to share that this thread made me laugh. :rotfl: It is no wonder there is confusion within restaurants, resorts, etc. With everyone's personal experiences shared here (which I believe to be the truth) we have SEVERAL different answers. Yes, but you have to pay. Yes, and it is free. No, if you are on the dining plan. Yes, if you are on the dining plan. Can't Disney figure out how to be consistent!

OP, based on what I am reading, be prepared for anything. Here's some :wizard: that it works out how you need it to.

Basically, they are supposed to charge an up-charge for the substitution but you may get a waiter/waitress that doesn't charge and gives them to you for no additional charge. If that happens, leave a little extra in the tip.

I do think it is up to your server. Last year on the DDP, we subbed the onion rings without a charge. This year on the DDP, we subbed the onion rings and were charged $2.29 (looking at the receipt) to do so. Totally worth it in my opinion!

Thats why it's always good to be nice to your server. :)

I have that t-shirt too! Mine has a little onion ring grease stain on it.;)

This reminds me of Red Robin. If you don't know Red Robin, they are mainly on the west coast, but have moved in to other markets in the east. They have the best burgers around, I mean the best. They are also known for their bottomless steak fries.

They sell an onion ring appetizer for 6.99 or 7.99, you get a tower of thirteen wonderful onion rings with BBQ ranch and ranch sauces on the side for dipping. :worship:. Instead of forking out all of those dollars for the appetizer we sub onion rings for our steak fries for an extra 99 cents each. Even ask for the side sauces too. You get five rings if you substitute, then you ask for a refill of fries after you have chowed down on some rings. The servers are happy to provide the fries refill. So you get ten onion rings for $1.98 and then the fries too. The best of both worlds, just have to wait for your burger to arrive to enjoy the fries.

Doesn't sound like the SciFi is as good of a deal if they up-charge though. Psst, don't tell anyone what I just mentioned about Red Robin, it is a Dis secret.;)

Uh, last time I checked, Red Robin doesn't have 60,000 employees at any one location, the third-largest bus system in the state, and nighttime fireworks spectaculars. Yeah, that's what you're paying for when you stay at the Grand Floridian for $450, or pay $32 a day to park-hop, get the onion ring appetizer at Sci-Fi for $6.99 or sub it for $1.50. I can't help but laugh whenever people compare the outside world to Disney World. It's not apples and oranges, folks. It's apples and orchards. :)

My comparison wasn't to Disney, but rather to the situation. I wasn't trying to show Disney in a negative light, if that was what you were worried about.

Also Disney operates their restaurants in a manner that each has to sustain itself. A restaurant at Disney is no different than a restaurant in the real world. That restaurant probably has about as many staff working it as a restaurant around the corner from me. If the restaurant is unprofitable, it would close.
