Are there any Scientologists on the boards? I would imagine there either are not, or as a rule they tend to keep quiet about it with all the Tom bashing that goes on here. I must admit to being particularly perplexed by this religion. Could anyone recap in a nutshell the basis of Scientology? Not just the E-meter and Thetans. But the whole evil Lord Xenu thing too! Did anyone else see South PArk last week? Did they get sued yet?

I"m actually attempting to read Dianetics (aka The Scientology Bible) right now. DH bought it back in Oct when we went to the state fair after being suckered into a 'free stress test' by the Scientologists. They also keep sending us literature, trying to get us to go to their center in Dallas, but we haven't gone yet.

I think it's interesting from a scientific point of view, but I'm not sure I believe all this bullpucky about engrams and thetans and what not.

I imagine that they didn't mention Xenu during the stress test?

a "church" or more likely a cult, started by a sci fi writer, who was a multi millionaire, who went into seclusion at the end of his life, whose membership keeps an office for him at their local offices so when he comes back he has a place to work, and who allegedly skimmed about 200 million from the "church" before his death, and put it in offshore accounts. A group that was on the cult list, and which then bought the cult awareness network, and staffed it with members, to give advice on other cults.

75 million years ago, a tyrant named Xenu transported people from outer space to Earth, dropped them in volcanoes, then exploded hydrogen bombs on them. That experience is the root of all human misery today. In order to combat the misery, you get to pay for audits to clean yourself of the evil.

From the time article:

If your dumb enough to fallow the like of Tom Cruse you can only get what you deserve.

Ron Hubbard quotes that I find interesting.

"You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, start a religion".

"Make money, make more money, make other people make money".

"Never discuss scientology with a critic. Just discuss his or her crimes, known and unknown."

I'll admit the whole thing is very confusing to me. I couldn't get through Dianetics at all. It just confused me more. I'm still not sure what their core beliefs are. I'm always interested in learning about others religions but this one I don't get at all. Maybe someone could lay it out so a layman can understand. :confused3

I saw the South Park and it was hilarious. I had no clue that was what scientologists really believe! Sorry, but that is just ridiculous! I thnk even less now of Tom Cruise and even John Travolta after hearing what they believe in. Lord Xenu!??? :rotfl2:

I'll bet Tom's next step is to start thinking he IS Lord Xenu! :rotfl2:

Myst

I read some things about it sometime back. It's kind of like the church of being a good person: treat others fairly, be a good citizen, do your part for society, big emphasis on everyone being equal. I don't believe they recognize a god; that would mean that someone is stronger /greater /better than they themselves, and that would mean that everyone isn't equal.

Yeah, but it also says that every single illness known to man is not caused by germs, or body parts wearing down through age, or any other cause we could think of. Illnesses are caused by traumatic 'engrams' and if you get rid of all these 'engrams' you can be cured of EVERYTHING from the common cold to klutziness to arthritis and maybe even the Big C..cancer.

Gimme a break. :rolleyes1

Just subscribing... I've tried researching this before and will be interested to hear any views here!

Isn't John Travolta a Scientologist?

You don't see him acting like Tom Cruise. I think Tom Cruise went off the deep end and Scientology has nothing to do with it.

Dittoes for Kirstie Alley. One of Scientology's MO's is to recruit Hollywood celebrities and use their "star power" to try and appeal to the masses. In fact, they operate a seperate "Celebrity Centre" in Hollywood.

As for Cruise's actions, they are pretty much dead-on for Scientology teachings.

Wow, I've been reading these links, and I've got to say that I didn't know that people were that easily duped.

after a 2 year bout of PPD (which of course doesn't exist -thanks Tom for pointing that out) - I wish a big heaping case of (what dosen't exist) on him. Studied psychiatry, he claims? I've got a bridge - cheap.

Snake oil. Still sells.
