I have trouble maybe once a year......never have figured out what triggers it. Anyone else have trouble? Do you know what triggers yours? What do you do about it? :confused3

Vacuuming triggers mine every time! I don't know why, but if I vacuum, it really gets bad.

I think standing in one place does it too. Sometimes it bothers me a bit when I stand in line at WDW.

I used to have a script for Vioxx that really helped. I am sure whatever med they prescribe now in place of it would work as well.

I haven't had much of a problem with mine recently, so I haven't gotten a new script.

That's ironic that you started this post. I am having a huge problem with sciatica in my thigh. We think it's from overcompensating on this leg for my bad leg that was hurt in the accident. So now I have the bad knee and foot on my right side and the sciatic pain on the left side. It started out just kind of hurting, not bad. But in the past week it's gotten really really bad... more painful then my knee and foot. It catches me off guard every time I stand up, ouch!

I go to my orthopedic tomorrow for a follow up appt and will now have to mention this. Do they do anything to actually diagnose sciatica? What causes it? Can they do anything to help it besides medication? I was on a mega steriod anti inflammatory prescription right before our Ireland trip so I already know something like that isn't going to help it.

I had this problem about 2 years ago. I hurt my knee and was just throwing my body out of wack trying to walk! I finally went to a Chiropractor. I had never been before and was very sceptical...well long story short He worked MIRACLES! I only had to go for a month. It would hurt worse after the adjustment but about a month later I realized I wasn't hurting any more. I had another flare up about a year ago when I was prego. I went and it helped. If you can find a good chiro. I would definately make an appointment. It may help alleviate your pain.

Take care and good health to you..

BTW...had been to my Dr. was given pills, x rays etc...but nothing worked! I couldn't keep taking the pain killers when I had to drive my kids around so I really needed another alternative.

I am there right now LOL...I am on anti inflamatories, muscle relaxers and pain pills but what really helps is physical therapy. A few sessions with the physical therapist and I should be up and about again.

I had it when I was pregnant and the Dr. said that it is caused by weight and/or overuse. However, it was always worse with weather change--OUCH! And I am allergic to anti-imflammatories, so all I could do was Tylenol and a heating pad (Which really helped). Good luck. I know it hurts.

Okay how do you spell IRONIC???? I was just coming on to ask the same question!!!!!!!! I had a bout with this about 7 years ago and from that time on it has been pretty mild and rarely occuring. I had foot surgery 10 days ago and had to put all my weight on one side....the side I have problems with. ON sun I moved ever so slightly and voila.....it starts up again. This originally started when I was preg 23 years ago and I lost much of the feeling on this side (right). I cannot believe it is back and tonight is my son's senior awards night and I cannot go :sad2:

I had foot surgery b/c my left foot was killing me ...it is getting better and NOW my right side is killing me....will I EVER be able to not walk like Quasiomodo??

I have had sciatic trouble for years, and recently found out that I was misdiagnosed by at least 4 doctors. What happened was, once one dr. (my OB during pregnancy) said I have sciatica, all the other drs. I saw simply agreed. I finally was sent to a pain specialist who took some x-rays, and it turns out I have advanced degenerative arthritis of the SI joint (where the bottom of the spine joins the pelvis). The arthritis is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. Pills, therapy, chiro, cortisone injections... nothing seems to help so far. I am only 31 and it is getting to the point where I can not sit, stand, walk, or sleep for very long periods.

I don't walk like Quasimodo... more like Lurch.

I had it when I was pregnant with my son. It would take me 20 to 30 minutes to just walk to the kitchen and pour a bowl of cereal. He must have laid in that position for a week and I was in total agony for that entire week.

Thankfully, I've not had it since. I do think there are different degrees of it though because I'd heard people talking about it being a little painful. Well, I do have a low threshold for pain, but a little painful doesn't even begin to describe the pain I was in. It was PURE agony!

WEll I think that it does have degrees of pain. I know what you mean when I was preg I used to have to walk from bench to bench just to get down the mall. But suddenly it just went a way when the baby turned. It lasted like 8 months and then it was gone!

I've had (have) sciatica when pregnant - so badly with my DD5 that there were days when I crawled from my bed to the bathroom in tears. :sad2:

I have a great massage therapist that works the muscles around the sciatic nerve. It hurts like . . . well, it makes me come off the table sometimes.

But then I'm a week without pain.

Hot baths help too.

Good luck!

I've had it intermittantly for many years. If I try to jog more than 3 miles at a time, it flares up. I've modified my exercise routine to try other cardio options. What truly works is a cortisone shot directly at the site. The downside is the meds in the shot wear off after a couple of months. Some people say the shot is painful, but I think if you're ready to consider it, then your sciatica causes you more pain than the shot.

This is how it was for me too. If I was sitting back on the sofa, leaning forward could actually bring tears to my eyes. I just really couldn't move for that entire week. When I was STARVING, I'd have to make my way to the kitchen for something simple like cereal (when I was alone). You can bet that I didn't do any backtracking. LOL I'd get my bowl and spoon, then head right and get the cereal, then the milk. Then I'd go sit on the sofa to eat it. It literally took me 20 to 30 minutes to get my cereal. When I was finished, the bowl sat on the sofa table. It was nothing short of PURE AGONY!

i get it when i'm lying down in bed. i only have trouble in my left side and it causes twinges in my left calf. actually, since i've been walking to work every day (3 miles each way!) it's definitely been much better. i never know what to do about it when i do get a flare up, i just usually take pain killers, like advil.
