Sci-Fi or Prime Time?

My MIL, who is in her mid 60's, will be going to WDW with me and DS(5) next year. She has never been to WDW and I want to have some ADR's that she will enjoy. For one of our DHS days I'd like to take her to either Sci-Fi or Prime Time. Which would you pick for a 60-something year old MIL/Grandma?

Hmm..... That's a tough one but I'd go with Prime Time just for the interaction with the waitress. I've been to both with my mother, and even though she enjoyed both, she liked PT better. I remember her and my aunt saying how it reminded them of my Grandma's kitchen of their youth.

Definitely ask her.
I'm 57 and LOVE both places. I went to the drive in all the time in high school, and am addicted to I Love Lucy and Honeymooners and 50s memorabilia. But she might like one more than the other.

You can't go wrong with either! But if I was picking for my kids it would be Sci Fi. But if I was picking for my MIL I would take her to 50's PTC.

50's Prime Time is always a must do for us. We have never had a bad meal there. I can't say the same for Sci-Fi. It's cool in there but the food is not great.

I would pick the Prime Time anyway, but if there will be 3 of you I would definitely go with the PT. Seating at the Sci Fi is in rows of 2, so someone would have to sit alone.

50s PT...she'll probably get a kick out of the decor, and the old TV shows. plus the food is just mighty darn good.

I would definitely ask her some very specific questions before taking her to 50's PT. Given that she's be the oldest in the group (at least I'm guessing that giving what you said), there is a good chance the server will pick her to be the one that gets picked on (i.e., eat your veggies, no elbows on the table, use your napkins, don't walk with your mouthful, etc.). If she doesn't mind the ribbing, then 50PT would be okay. If she's the type that would be uncomfortable with a stranger giving her lessons in manners whether they're needed or not, I'd skip it. I went once and absolutely hated it; I was a kid and the server didn't pick on me, but I spent the whole meal worrying that they would, so it was a very uncomfortable and awful meal. The food is basic "comfort" style food.

Sci Fi, on the other hand, is a lot of fun for me. I like watching the old (and usually pretty corny/cheesy) clips from old sci fi movies. The biggest drawback is the seating. They usually set folks two a bench, so it's pretty likely that you'll be split into a two and one (you'll be in the same car, but someone will probably end up sitting alone). It makes conversation tough. If your DS is very small, they might be able to squeeze you into one row, but I haven't seen that happen to often. The food is drive-in style food (burgers, etc.). It's always been tasty and a fun atmosphere.

So for me, it's an easy choice...Sci Fi.

I would pick Prime Time. The food is better and the atmosphere is a lot of fun!

Another vote for PT. DS11 and DD9 make this request every time. We will be dining there January 2nd :) We also stop by before Famtasmic to pick up PBJ milkshakes from the bar. We absolutely love PT!

DW and I have done PT a few times, the food is good. But it aways feels cramped even for the two of us. We've never done Sci-Fi. I think we are going to give it a try this year. But I have a felling it may fee just as cramped. My fave is Hollywood and vine good food and a more open atmosphere. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth

I definitely agree with this one. But, I have to say that my mom did not care for the food at 50's at all. The menu is pretty much southern staples and it just didn't taste like grandma's cooking!

50's PT is on our must do list. Good food and with the right waitress it can be Great fun !

Very good points. I know my MIL would not mind the ribbing. She's pretty fun loving, but yeah, I probably should double check with her first.

As far as the seating goes at Sci Fi, I actually think my DS would like being in a bench by himself. When we go to restaurants, he always wants me and DH to sit together so he could have the whole bench to himself.
But these are all very good points to consider and ones I hadn't thought of. Thanks

I enjoy both of them, but made a reservation for Sci Fi, for my March 2014 trip. Both provide fun experiences.
29 trips to Disney World and counting...next stop POFQ March 2014

Ask her to watch some youtube clips of both places. I took my grandma to WDW in May and she was all on board and excited until she watched a video of PT. She is very good natured and we rib each other as a family all the time, but it was a very different thing for her to be put on the spot by a stranger, with others watching. And the whole being talked to like a child when she was 70. It made her uncomfortable. We went to sci-fi instead, and she loved it. It still gave her that 50's feel with the cars and things. And she got a drink with a glow cube and I think still talks about it!
